Abstract

A method and composition for treating a patient suffering from a disease, disorder or condition and associated pain include the administration to the patient of a therapeutically effective amount of a neurotoxin selected from a group consisting of Botulinum toxin types A, B, C, D, E, F and G.

Claims (54)

1 . A method for treating a spastic muscle, the method comprising the step of administering to a patient a therapeutically effective amount of the neurotoxic component of a botulinum toxin to thereby treat the spastic muscle, wherein the neurotoxic component administered to the patient has been purified from a botulinum toxin obtained by fermenting Clostridium botulinum.

2 . The method of claim 1 wherein the botulinum toxin is selected from the group consisting of botulinum toxin types A, B, C, D, E, F and G.

3 . The method of claim 1 wherein the botulinum toxin is botulinum toxin type A.

4 . The method of claim 1 wherein the neurotoxic component has a molecular weight of about 150 kilodaltons.

7 . The method of claim 1 wherein the neurotoxic component is administered by intramuscular injection.

8 . The method of claim 1 wherein the spastic muscle is a facial muscle.

9 . The method of claim 1 wherein the spastic muscle is a jaw muscle.

10 . The method of claim 1 wherein the spastic muscle is a throat muscle.

11 . The method of claim 1 wherein the spastic muscle is a vocal chord muscle.

12 . The method of claim 1 wherein the spastic muscle is a leg muscle.

13 . The method of claim 12 wherein the spastic muscle is a thigh muscle.

14 . The method of claim 1 wherein the spastic muscle is a hand muscle.

15 . The method of claim 1 wherein the spastic muscle is a wrist muscle.

16 . The method of claim 1 wherein the spastic muscle is a forearm muscle.

17 . The method of claim 1 wherein the spastic muscle is a smooth muscle.

18 . The method of claim 17 wherein the smooth muscle is a sphincter.

19 . The method of claim 18 wherein the smooth muscle sphincter is a gastrointestinal system smooth muscle sphincter.

20 . The method of claim 18 wherein the smooth muscle sphincter is a urinary smooth muscle sphincter.

21 . The method of claim 18 wherein the smooth muscle sphincter is a rectal sphincter.

22 . A method for treating a spastic muscle, the method comprising the step of administering to a patient a therapeutically effective amount of the neurotoxic component of only a botulinum toxin type A, to thereby treat the spastic muscle, wherein the neurotoxic component administered to the patient has been purified from a botulinum toxin obtained by fermenting Clostridium botulinum.

23 . The method of claim 22 wherein the neurotoxic component has a molecular weight of about 150 kilodaltons.

24 . The method of claim 22 wherein the neurotoxic component is administered by intramuscular injection.

25 . The method of claim 22 wherein the spastic muscle is a facial muscle.

26 . The method of claim 22 wherein the spastic muscle is a jaw muscle.

27 . The method of claim 22 wherein the spastic muscle is a throat muscle.

28 . The method of claim 22 wherein the spastic muscle is a vocal chord muscle.

29 . The method of claim 22 wherein the spastic muscle is a leg muscle.

30 . The method of claim 29 wherein the spastic muscle is a thigh muscle.

31 . The method of claim 22 wherein the spastic muscle is a hand muscle.

32 . The method of claim 22 wherein the spastic muscle is a wrist muscle.

33 . The method of claim 22 wherein the spastic muscle is a forearm muscle.

34 . The method of claim 22 wherein the spastic muscle is a smooth muscle.

36 . The method of claim 35 wherein the smooth muscle sphincter is a gastrointestinal system smooth muscle sphincter.

37 . The method of claim 35 wherein the smooth muscle sphincter is a urinary smooth muscle sphincter.

38 . The method of claim 35 wherein the smooth muscle sphincter is a rectal sphincter.

39 . A method for treating a spastic muscle, the method comprising the step of administering to a patient a therapeutically effective amount of the neurotoxic component from a single botulinum toxin type selected from the group consisting of the botulinum toxin types A, B, C, D, E, F and G to thereby treat the spastic muscle, wherein the neurotoxic component administered to the patient has been purified from a botulinum toxin obtained by fermenting a Clostridium botulinum bacterium.

40 . The method of claim 39 wherein the neurotoxic component has a molecular weight of about 150 kilodaltons.

41 . The method of claim 39 , wherein the neurotoxic component is administered by intramuscular injection.

42 . The method of claim 39 wherein the spastic muscle is a facial muscle.

43 . The method of claim 39 wherein the spastic muscle is a jaw muscle.

44 . The method of claim 39 wherein the spastic muscle is a throat muscle.

45 . The method of claim 39 wherein the spastic muscle is a vocal chord muscle.

46 . The method of claim 39 wherein the spastic muscle is a leg muscle.

47 . The method of claim 46 wherein the spastic muscle is a thigh muscle.

48 . The method of claim 39 wherein the spastic muscle is a hand muscle.

49 . The method of claim 39 wherein the spastic muscle is a wrist muscle.

50 . The method of claim 39 wherein the spastic muscle is a forearm muscle.

51 . The method of claim 39 wherein the spastic muscle is a smooth muscle.

52 . The method of claim 51 wherein the smooth muscle is a sphincter.

53 . The method of claim 52 wherein the smooth muscle sphincter is a gastrointestinal system smooth muscle sphincter.

54 . The method of claim 52 wherein the smooth muscle sphincter is a urinary smooth muscle sphincter.

55 . The method of claim 52 wherein the smooth muscle sphincter is a rectal sphincter.

56 . The method of claim 39 wherein the botulinum toxin is a botulinum toxin type A.
