Abstract

A light-emitting LED device has one or more light-emitting LED elements, including first and second spaced-apart electrodes with one or more light-emitting layers formed there-between, wherein at least one of the electrodes is a transparent electrode. Also included are a first transparent encapsulating layer having a first optical index formed over the transparent electrode opposite the light-emitting layer; a light-scattering layer formed over the first transparent encapsulating layer opposite the transparent electrode; and a second transparent encapsulating layer, having a second optical index lower than the first optical index, formed over the light-scattering layer.

Claims (9)

1. A light-emitting LED device, comprising:

one or more light-emitting LED elements including first and second spaced-apart electrodes with one or more light-emitting layers formed there-between, wherein at least one of the electrodes is a transparent electrode;

a first transparent encapsulating barrier layer having a first optical index formed over the transparent electrode opposite the light-emitting layer;

a light-scattering layer formed over the first transparent encapsulating barrier layer opposite the transparent electrode;

a second transparent encapsulating barrier layer, having a second optical index lower than the first optical index, formed over the light-scattering layer opposite the first transparent encapsulating barrier layer; and

an organic third transparent encapsulating layer having a third optical index lower than the first optical index formed between the light-scattering layer and the second transparent encapsulating barrier layer.

2. The light-emitting LED device of claim 1 , wherein the third optical index is matched to the second optical index.

3. The light-emitting LED device of claim 1 , wherein the organic third transparent encapsulating layer comprises parylene.

4. The light-emitting LED device of claim 1 , wherein the organic third transparent encapsulating layer is deposited using chemical vapor deposition.
