Abstract

The invention is generally related to cleaning compositions and methods of using same. More particularly, the invention is related to cleaning compositions which are substantially free of volatile organic chemicals.

Claims (26)

1. A cleaning composition comprising a solvent comprising at least one alkyl ester and at least one fragrance, wherein the cleaning composition contains greater than about 80 weight percent of the alkyl ester and the cleaning composition is substantially free of volatile organic compounds (“VOC's”).

2. The cleaning composition according to claim 1 , comprising less than two weight percent (“wt. %”) of the fragrance.

3. The cleaning composition according to claim 1 , wherein the fragrance is substantially free of VOC's.

4. The cleaning composition according to claim 1 , further comprising a first surfactant.

5. The cleaning composition according to claim 4 , further comprising a second surfactant.

6. The cleaning composition according to claim 1 , further comprising a coupling agent.

7. The cleaning composition according to claim 1 , wherein the alkyl ester is derived from a C 8 -C 18 fatty acid.

8. The cleaning composition according to claim 1 , comprising greater than about 50 wt. % of an ester derived from lauric acid.

9. The cleaning composition according to claim 8 , comprising greater than about 50 wt. % of methyl laurate.

10. The cleaning composition according to claim 8 , comprising greater than about 70 wt. % of methyl laurate.

11. The cleaning composition according to claim 1 , wherein the solvent further comprises one or more vegetable oils.

12. The cleaning composition according to claim 4 , wherein the first surfactant is selected from the group consisting of anionic surfactants, cationic surfactants, nonionic surfactants, amphoteric surfactants, and mixtures thereof.

13. A method of cleaning a surface of a substrate, the method comprising:

applying a cleaning composition comprising a solvent including at least one alkyl ester and at least one fragrance to a substrate surface having an undesirable residue thereupon, and,

removing the residue,

wherein the cleaning composition contains greater than about 80 weight percent of the alkyl ester and the cleaning composition is substantially free of volatile organic compounds (“VOC's”).

14. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the alkyl ester is derived from a C 8 -C 18 fatty acid.

15. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the cleaning composition comprises greater than about 50 wt. % of an ester derived from lauric acid.

16. The method according to claim 15 , wherein the cleaning composition comprises greater than about 50 wt. % of methyl laurate.

17. The method according to claim 16 , wherein the cleaning composition comprises greater than about 70 wt. % of methyl laurate.

18. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the residue is selected from the group consisting of polar, nonpolar, inorganic, organic, and particulate materials.

19. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the substrate surface is selected from the group consisting of metal, glass, wood, and concrete surfaces.

20. A method of cleaning or maintaining a drain or a lift station, the method comprising:

adding a quantity of a cleaning composition comprising a solvent including at least one alkyl ester to a drain or a lift station, so as to liquefy solidified fats, oils, and greases contained in the drain or lift station and thereby cause the liquefied fats, oils, and greases to float to the top of the drain or lift station,

wherein the cleaning composition contains greater than about 50 weight percent of the alkyl ester and the cleaning composition is substantially free of volatile organic compounds (“VOC's”).

21. The method according to claim 20 , further comprising removing the liquefied fats, oils, and greases from the drain or lift station.
