Abstract

Systems for variable forward error correction in a multipoint to point orthogonal frequency division multiplexing system are provided. In one embodiment, bidirectional communication system comprises: a first remote unit for communicating with a host unit using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing, the host unit communicatively coupled to a plurality of remote units in a multipoint-to-point configuration; wherein the first remote unit is configured to transmit at least one of a plurality of tones, the at least one of a plurality of tones modulated with upstream information using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing; and wherein the first remote unit selects an error correction degree for a first tone of the at least one of a plurality of tones based on error correction information received from the host unit, and encodes upstream information transmitted on the first tone based on the error correction degree.

Claims (25)

1 . A bidirectional communication system, the system comprising:

a first remote unit for communicating with a host unit using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing, the host unit communicatively coupled to a plurality of remote units in a multipoint-to-point configuration;

wherein the first remote unit is configured to transmit at least one of a plurality of tones, the at least one of a plurality of tones modulated with upstream information using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing; and

wherein the first remote unit selects an error correction degree for a first tone of the at least one of a plurality of tones based on error correction information received from the host unit, and encodes upstream information transmitted on the first tone based on the error correction degree.

2 . The system of claim 1 , the first remote unit including a modulator for modulating the at least one of a plurality of tones with upstream information using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing, wherein the modulator is configured to adjust at least one characteristic of the at least one of a plurality of tones such that when any tones are transmitted from the first remote unit and at least one other remote unit of the plurality of remote units, the orthogonality of the tones when received at the host unit is improved.

3 . The system of claim 2 , wherein the modulator is configured to adjust at least one of a carrier frequency, a carrier amplitude, and a phase.

4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of tones are received concurrently from at least two of the plurality of remote units.

5 . A bidirectional communication system, the system comprising:

a host unit to communicate with a plurality of remote units using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing, the plurality of remote units communicatively coupled to the host unit in a multipoint-to-point configuration;

the host unit receiving an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing waveform, the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing waveform comprising a plurality of tones transmitted by the plurality of remote units;

wherein the host unit selects an error correction degree for a first tone of the plurality of tones, and communicates an indication of the error correction degree to a first remote unit associated with the first tone

6 . The system of claim 5 , wherein the plurality of tones are received concurrently from at least two of the plurality of remote units.

7 . The system of claim 5 , wherein the host unit selects an error correction degree from a plurality of degrees of error correction, based on a type of data in the upstream information.

8 . The system of claim 7 , wherein the host unit selects a first degree of error correction when the type of data is voice data and selects a second degree of error correction when the type of data is non-voice data.

9 . The system of claim 7 , the host unit comprising a provisioning table, wherein the host unit selects the degree of error correction from the provisioning table.

10 . The system of claim 7 , the host unit selects the degree of error correction based on parameters relating to the first tone.

11 . A bi-directional communication system, the system comprising:

a multipoint-to-point host unit; and

a plurality of remote units communicatively coupled to the multipoint-to-point host unit through an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing waveform;

wherein the multipoint-to-point host unit is configured to receive the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing waveform, the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing waveform comprising a plurality of tones transmitted by the plurality of remote units;

wherein a first remote unit of the plurality of remote units is configured to transmit at least one of the plurality of tones, the at least one of a plurality of tones modulated with upstream information using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing; and

wherein the first remote unit is configured to apply error correction to the upstream information transmitted on the at least one of the plurality of tones based on information received from the multipoint-to-point host unit.

12 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of remote units are configured to modulate a plurality of tones with upstream information and adjust at least one characteristic of the plurality of tones such that when any tones are transmitted from the first remote unit and at least one other remote unit of the plurality of remote units, the orthogonality of the tones when received at the host unit is improved.

13 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of remote units are each configured to adjust at least one of a carrier frequency, a carrier amplitude, and a phase.

14 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the multipoint-to-point host unit selects a degree of error correction for the upstream information based on a type of data in the upstream information.
