Abstract

An elastomeric ink delivery extrusion transports ink and air to printhead modules in an ink jet printhead assembly. A series of patterned holes are laser ablated onto an upper surface of the extrusion. These interface with inlets on the underside of a series of printhead modules of the assembly and relay ink and air from respective longitudinal channels of the extrusion.

Claims (12)

1. An extrusion module for delivering ink to an array of printhead modules defining a pagewidth printhead, the modules being substantially coextensive with the extrusion module, the extrusion module comprising:

a plurality of ink channels for conveying discrete inks; and

a pattern of holes defined in a surface of the extrusion module via which said discrete inks in said channels pass from the extrusion module to each of said printhead modules.

2. The extrusion module of claim 1 , wherein the module also includes an air channel for the delivery of air to the printhead modules.

3. The extrusion module of claim 1 , wherein the module is bonded onto a flexible printed circuit board.

4. The extrusion module of claim 1 wherein an end of the extrusion module has a molded end cap fitted thereto, the end cap having a number of connectors to which ink and air delivery hoses are connected.

5. The extrusion module of claim 4 wherein said end cap has a spine including a row of plugs that are received within ends of the respective flow channels.

6. The extrusion module of claim 5 wherein said end cap clamps onto the ink delivery extrusion module by way of snap engagement tabs formed thereon.

7. The extrusion module of claim 4 wherein said end cap includes connectors which interface directly with an ink cartridge.

8. The extrusion module of claim 1 wherein a surface of the extrusion module is arranged to seal against annular rings of a number of inlets of each printhead module.

9. The extrusion module of claim 1 wherein the extrusion module is non-hydrophobic.

10. The extrusion module of claim 1 wherein said holes in said surface of the extrusion module are laser ablated.
