Abstract

The present invention relates to the optimization of human visual function by correcting and/or optimizing high-order optical aberrations in high performance optical devices. The optimization is particularly useful for high performance devices used under low light conditions such as binoculars, rifle scopes, telescopes, microscopes, night vision goggles and laser eye protection devices.

Claims (3)

1. A removable optical element that can be fastened to the eyepiece of a night vision device which comprises a cured polymer material that (a) has a variable index of refraction and (b) corrects for one or more high order aberrations of a subject's eye within a 3 mm diameter of a pupil and no high order aberrations outside the 3 mm diameter of a pupil, wherein the 3 mm diameter of a pupil correction maximizes a modulation transfer function below a Nyquist resolution limit, wherein the Nyquist resolution limit is a minimum visual acuity measured due to a cone density in a human fovea.

2. A removable optical element that can be fastened to the objective side of a night vision device which comprises a cured polymer material that (a) has a variable index of refraction, (b) cancels out light having a spatial frequency content in excess of the spatial frequency content of the night vision device, and (c) corrects for one or more high order aberrations of a subject's eye within a 3 mm diameter of a pupil and no high order aberrations outside the 3 mm diameter of a pupil, wherein the 3 mm diameter of a pupil correction maximizes a modulation transfer function below a Nyquist resolution limit, wherein the Nyquist resolution limit is a minimum visual acuity measured due to a cone density in a human fovea.

3. An optical element in a laser eye protection device which comprises a cured polymer material that (a) has a variable index of refraction and (b) corrects for monochromatic aberrations of a subject's eye within a 3 mm diameter of a pupil and no high order aberrations outside the 3 mm diameter of a pupil, wherein the 3 mm diameter of a pupil correction maximizes a modulation transfer function below a Nyquist resolution limit, wherein the Nyquist resolution limit is a minimum visual acuity measured due to a cone density in a human fovea.
