Abstract

Disclosed is a metal molding system, including a metal molding conduit assembly having a conduit passageway configured to pass a volume of molten metal located downstream of a passageway blockage formable in the conduit passageway. Also disclosed is a mold for forming an article from a molten metallic, including a mold body configured to cooperate with a metal molding conduit assembly, including a conduit passageway configured to pass a volume of molten metal into a mold cavity defined by the mold body, the volume of molten metal located downstream of a passageway blockage.

Claims (7)

1. A molten metal hot runner assembly being connectable to a metal molding system having an injection unit including a nozzle being configured to connect the injection unit to the molten metal hot runner assembly, the molten metal hot runner assembly comprising:

a metal molding conduit assembly, including:

a conduit passageway being configured to pass a volume of molten metal located downstream of a passageway blockage, the passageway blockage being formable in the conduit passageway, the passageway blockage being used to substantially resist a molten-metal residual pressure that originates from the injection unit, the conduit passageway including a plurality of downstream blockages being formable therein, the plurality of downstream blockages located in the conduit passageway downstream of the passageway blockage, the plurality of downstream blockages being kept in a relatively soft condition so as to: (i) not resist a molten metal residual pressure, and (ii) resist drool pressure, the conduit passageway being defined by a conduit body member that forms a plurality of drops that lead to a mold cavity defined by a mold, the passageway blockage, once released, does not interfere with a flow of molten metal since the passageway blockage flows along with a molten metal and melts therein before the passageway blockage hits a bend in the conduit passageway; and

blockage-forming mechanisms being configured to form the passageway blockage and the plurality of downstream blockages, the passageway blockage and the plurality of downstream blockages being formable by respective blockage-forming mechanisms, the volume of molten metal being disposed between the passageway blockage and the plurality of downstream blockages, so that: (i) a first shot is disposed in a drop, and (ii) a second shot is disposed in another drop, the first shot and the second shot being heatable by respective heating mechanisms,

wherein the passageway blockage is pushed into the conduit passageway but the passageway blockage is melted by the heating mechanisms before the passageway blockage travels further downstream into any particular branch of the conduit passageway.

2. The molten metal hot runner assembly of claim 1 , further comprising:

a plug catcher for catching a plug so that the plug does not disrupt the flow of molten metal into branches of the molten metal hot runner assembly, and the plug caught in the plug catcher is liquefied by applied heating.
