Abstract

A system and method are disclosed for dynamically reserving resources within a cluster environment. The method embodiment of the invention comprises receiving a request for resources in the cluster environment, monitoring events after receiving the request for resources and based on the monitored events, dynamically modifying at least one of the request for resources and the cluster environment.

Claims (50)

1. A method of managing resources within a compute environment, the method comprising:

receiving a request from a requestor to consume compute resources in a compute environment, wherein the request is associated with a workload to be submitted at future time as compared to a time of the request;

performing an analysis of compute resources in the compute environment based on a service level agreement, wherein the service level agreement defines an agreement between the requestor and the compute environment for a guarenteed quality of service for compute resources according to the service level agreement upon the request;

based on the analysis and in compliance with the service level agreement, reserving compute resources in the compute environment according to the request;

receiving the workload submitted by the requestor;

processing the received workload by the reserved compute resources in the compute environment; and

charging the requestor for the reservation of compute resources.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

charging the requestor a specific rate for the reserved compute resources whether the reserved compute resources are used or not.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein charging the requestor further comprises charging a first rate for reserved compute resources that are used and a second rate for reserved compute resources that are not used.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein a used compute resource is processed by workload run within the reservation.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

dynamically customizing compute resources within the reservation for the workload submitted within the reservation.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the reservation is associated with one of an individual or a group.

7. A system of managing resources within a compute environment, the system comprising:

a processor;

a module configured to control the processor to receive a request from a requestor to consume compute resources in a compute environment, wherein the request is associated with a workload to be submitted at future time as compared to a time of the request;

a module configured to control the processor to perform an analysis of compute resources in the compute environment based on a service level agreement; wherein the service level agreement defines an agreement between the requestor and the compute environment for a guarenteed quality of service for compute resources according to the service level agreement upon the request;

a module configured to control the processor to reserve compute resources in the compute environment according to the request, based on the analysis and in compliance with the service level agreement;

a module configured to control the processor to receive the workload submitted by the requestor;

a module configured to control the processor to process the received workload by the reserved compute resources in the compute environment; and

a module configured to control the processor to charge the requestor for the reservation of compute resources.

8. The system of claim 7 , further comprising:

a module configured to control the processor to charge a specific rate for the reserved compute resources whether the reserved compute resources are used or not.

9. The system of claim 7 , further comprising:

a module configured to control the processor to charge the requestor a first rate for reserved compute resources that are used and a second rate for reserved compute resources that are not used.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein a used compute resource is consumed by workload run within the reservation.

11. The system of claim 7 , further comprising:

a module configured to control the processor to dynamically customize compute resources within the reservation for the workload submitted within the reservation.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the reservation is associated with one of an individual or a group.

13. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing a computer program having instructions for controlling a computing device having a processor to manage resources within a compute environment, the method comprising:

receiving a request from a requestor to consume compute resources in a compute environment, wherein the request is associated with a workload to be submitted at future time as compared to a time of the request;

performing an analysis of compute resources in the compute environment based on a service level agreement, wherein the service level agreement defines an agreement between the requestor and the compute environment for a guarenteed quality of service for compute resources according to the service level agreement upon the request;

based on the analysis and in compliance with the service level agreement, reserving via the processor, compute resources in the compute environment according to the request;

receiving the workload submitted by the requestor; and

processing the received workload by the reserved compute resources in the compute environment;

charging the requestor for the reservation of compute resources.

14. The computer readable storage medium of claim 13 , further comprising instructions for charging the requestor a specific rate for the reserved compute resources whether the reserved compute resources are used or not.

15. The computer readable storage medium of claim 13 , further comprising instructions for charging the requestor a first rate for reserved compute resources that are used and a second rate for reserved compute resources that are not used.

16. The computer readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein a used compute resource is consumed by a job run within the reservation.

17. The computer readable storage medium of claim 13 , the instructions further comprising:

dynamically customizing compute resources within the reservation for the workload submitted within the reservation.

18. The computer readable storage medium of claim 17 , the instructions further comprising that the reservation is associated with one of an individual or a group.

19. A method of managing resources within a compute environment, the method comprising:

receiving a request from a requestor to consume compute resources in a compute environment, wherein the request is associated with a workload to be submitted at a future time, as compared to a time of the request, to the compute environment by the requestor;

performing an analysis of compute resources in the compute environment based on a service level agreement, wherein the service level agreement defines an argument between the requestor and the compute environment for a guarenteed quality of service for compute resources according to the service level agreement upon the request;

based on the analysis and in compliance with the service level agreement, reserving compute resources in the compute environment according to the request;

receiving the workload submitted by the requestor;

consuming the received workload by the reserved compute resources in the compute environment; and

charging the requestor for the reservation of compute resources.
