Abstract

A method includes inserting an implant having a support member and a retention member movably coupled to the support member such that at least a portion of the support member of the implant is disposed between a first spinous process and a second spinous process. The implant is rotated relative to the first spinous process and the second spinous process about an axis substantially normal to a mid-line axis of a spinal column while the portion of the support member is disposed between the first spinous process and the second spinous process. In some embodiments, the implant is rotated such that an inner surface of an end portion of the retention member is between an outer surface of the end portion of the retention member and the first spinous process. The retention member is translated relative to the support member.

Claims (27)

1. A spinal implant apparatus, comprising:

a support member having a most distal end, an opposing most proximal end, and a lumen extending therein; the support member also having a first longitudinal axis extending through the most distal end, the most proximal end, and extending through a center of the lumen; wherein the support member is configured to have at least a portion thereof disposed between a first spinous process and a second spinous process;

a retention member having a first end portion and an opposing second end portion, the retention member being movably coupled to the support member and configured to rotate relative to the support member about a second axis from a first position to a second position; the second axis extending perpendicular to the first longitudinal axis, through the lumen, and disposed between the most proximal end and the most distal end;

wherein, in the first position:

the first end portion and the second end portion of the retention member are disposed within the lumen of the support member;

the second end portion of the retention member is disposed on a first side of the first longitudinal axis;

wherein, in the second position:

the first end portion of the retention member is disposed within the lumen and the second end portion of the retention member extends outwardly from the support member and is disposed between the most distal end and the most proximal end of the support member;

the second end portion of the retention member is disposed on a second side of the first longitudinal axis, wherein the second side is opposite the first side;

wherein in the both the first and second positions, the spinal implant apparatus maintains a constant longitudinal length.

2. The spinal implant apparatus of claim 1 wherein the retention member is rigid.

3. The spinal implant apparatus of claim 1 wherein:

the support member and the retention member are configured to be inserted between the first spinous process and the second spinous process percutaneously; and

the retention member is configured to move from the first position to the second position after the support member is disposed between the first spinous process and the second spinous process.

4. The spinal implant apparatus of claim 1 wherein the support member is tapered such that a size, normal to the longitudinal axis, of the most distal end portion of the support member is less than a size of the most proximal end portion of the support member.

5. The spinal implant apparatus of claim 1 wherein the retention member is configured to be movable from the first position to the second position and from the second position to the first position.

6. The spinal implant apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a biasing member configured to bias the retention member toward at least one of the first position or the second position.

7. The spinal implant apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a wing extending outwardly from the most proximal end of the support member.

8. The spinal implant apparatus of claim 7 wherein a first side of the wing is curved and forms a portion of a saddle configured to receive the first spinous process.

9. The spinal implant apparatus of claim 8 wherein the second end portion of the retention member is curved; wherein the second end portion of the retention member forms another portion of the saddle configured to receive the first spinous process in the second position.

10. The spinal implant apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a locking member disposed within the lumen; the locking member operative to engage the retention member to retain the retention member in the second position.

11. The spinal implant apparatus of claim 10 wherein the locking member engages the first end portion of the retention member when the retention member is in the second position.

12. The spinal implant apparatus of claim 10 wherein the locking member is operative to fixedly maintain the retention member in the second position.

13. The spinal implant apparatus of claim 10 wherein the locking member is operative to releasably maintain the retention member in the second position.

14. The spinal implant apparatus of claim 1 :

wherein, in the first position, the first end portion of the retention member is disposed on the second side of the first longitudinal axis;

wherein, in the second position, the second end portion of the retention member is disposed on the first side of the first longitudinal axis.
