Printing fluid supply device
View Patent ↗A printing fluid supply device for a printhead, that has a printing fluid reservoir containing a quantity of printing fluid, a porous body having a plurality of individual channels arranged in an array for supplying the printhead with printing fluid under capillary action and a fluid trapping layer between the porous body and the printing fluid reservoir for trapping the printing fluid from the printing fluid reservoir such that it can be extracted by the plurality of individual channels and drawn to the printhead.
1. A printing fluid supply device for a printhead, the printing fluid supply device comprising:
a printing fluid reservoir containing a quantity of printing fluid;
a porous body having a plurality of individual channels arranged in an array for supplying the printhead with printing fluid under capillary action; and,
a fluid trapping layer between the porous body and the printing fluid reservoir for trapping the printing fluid from the printing fluid reservoir such that it can be extracted by the plurality of individual channels and drawn to the printhead.
2. A printing fluid supply device according to claim 1 wherein at least some of the plurality of channels are arranged in an ordered array in the porous body.
3. A printing fluid supply device according to claim 1 further comprising an interface for detachable engagement with a printer unit housing the printhead.
4. A printing fluid supply device according to claim 1 wherein the trapping layer incorporates porous foam or sponge material.
5. A printing fluid supply device according to claim 1 wherein each channel has substantially rigid walls continuously extending between first and second ends thereof.
6. A printing fluid supply device according to claim 5 wherein the surroundings to which the second end of each of the channels is open is substantially filled with air.
7. A printing fluid supply device according to claim 1 wherein each channel has a maximum transverse dimension of about 10 micrometres.
8. A printing fluid supply device according to claim 1 wherein each channel has a diameter of about 10 micrometres or less.
9. A printing fluid supply device according to claim 1 wherein the porous body is formed of a polymer selected from the group consisting of polycarbonate, acrylic, polysulfone, polystyrene, fluoropolymer, cyclic olefin polymer and cyclic olefin copolymer.
10. A printing fluid supply device according to claim 1 wherein the printing fluid is ink.
11. A printing fluid supply device according to claim 1 wherein the printhead incorporates a pagewidth printhead arranged to print printing fluid across the width of sheets of print media.
12. A printing fluid supply device according to claim 11 wherein the printhead incorporates a pagewidth printhead arranged as a two-dimensional array of at least 50,000 nozzles for printing across the width of sheets of print media.
13. A printing fluid supply device according to claim 1 wherein the printhead incorporates an array of the nozzles configured as a pagewidth printhead arranged to print on sheets of print media by ejecting at least 1200 drops of printing fluid per inch across the width of the sheets.

A printing fluid supply device according to claim 1 wherein the printhead incorporates an array of the nozzles configured as a pagewidth printhead arranged to print on sheets of print media by ejecting drops of printing fluid across the width of the sheets with a drop ejection energy of less than about 250 nanojoules per drop.
15. A printing fluid supply device according to claim 1 wherein the printhead incorporates a pagewidth printhead arranged to print printing fluid across the width of sheets of print media at a rate of at least 60 sheets per minute.

A printing fluid supply device according to claim 1 wherein the printhead incorporates an array of the nozzles configured as a pagewidth printhead arranged to print on sheets of print media by ejecting drops of printing fluid across the width of the sheets at a rate of at least 500 million drops per second.
17. A printing fluid supply device according to claim 1 wherein the printer unit is an inkjet printer unit comprising:
a media input tray for supplying print media for printing;
a print engine for printing an image on said print media; and
a media output tray for collecting the printed media;
wherein the print engine comprises a removable inkjet cartridge of a type having a pagewidth printhead and an ink supply and a cradle having a body adapted to receive the removable inkjet cartridge and to control the operation of the printhead for printing.
18. A printing fluid supply device according to claim 1 arranged for use in a print engine for an inkjet printer comprising:
a removable inkjet cartridge of a type having a pagewidth printhead and an ink supply; and
a cradle having a body adapted to receive the removable inkjet cartridge and to control the operation of the printhead for printing;
wherein the cradle is configured to be secured to the inkjet printer to receive print media from a media input tray and to deliver printed media to a media output tray.
