Abstract

A method and apparatus for fingerprint recognition is provided. A fingerprint is detected on a sensor. The fingerprint is digitized. A digitized background is subtracted from the fingerprint, resulting in a difference print. The difference print is matched with a database of fingerprint templates.

Claims (30)

1. A method of recognizing a fingerprint comprising:

detecting the fingerprint on a sensor;

receiving a nonce from a host system;

decrypting the nonce using a key;

encrypting the fingerprint and the nonce;

sending the fingerprint and the nonce to the host system;

decrypting the fingerprint and identifying the fingerprint; and

providing a user authentication based on the fingerprint, after the fingerprint has been validated.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the user authentication comprises a private key and public key of the user.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the private key/public key of the user is the key used to encrypt the nonce and the fingerprint.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein a key of the PKI key pair of the sensor is used to decryrt the nonce, and a key of the PKI key pair of the user is used to encrypt the fingerprint.

5. A method of recognizing a fingerprint comprising:

sending an encrypted nonce to a fingerprint sensor, the fingerprint sensor to acquire a fingerprint;

receiving an encrypted package including the fingerprint and the nonce from the sensor;

decrypting the fingerprint and identifying the fingerprint; and

providing a user authentication based on the fingerprint, after the fingerprint has been validated.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the user authentication comprises a private key and public key of the user.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the private key/public key of the user is the key used by the sensor to encrypt the nonce and the fingerprint.

8. The method of claim 5 , wherein a first key is a sensor private key of a sensor PKI key pair used to encrypt the fingerprint, and a second key is a public key of a user PKI key pair.

9. A fingerprint sensor comprising:

a sensing unit to detect the fingerprint on a sensor;

a security unit to receive a nonce from a digital system, the security unit to decrypt the nonce using a first key;

the security unit further to encrypt the fingerprint and the nonce using a second key;

a connection to send the fingerprint and the nonce to the digital system, the digital system to validate the fingerprint and provide a user authentication based on the fingerprint.

10. The fingerprint sensor of claim 9 , wherein the user authentication comprises a private key and public key of the user.

11. The fingerprint sensor of claim 9 , wherein the private key/public key of the user is the key used to encrypt the nonce and the fingerprint.

12. The fingerprint sensor of claim 9 , wherein a key of the first key is a PKI key pair of the sensor is used to decrypt the nonce encrypt the fingerprint, and a second key is a key of the PKI key pair of the user is used to encrypt the fingerprint.

13. The fingerprint sensor of claim 9 , wherein the nonce comprises a date/time stamp.

14. The method of claim 5 , wherein the nonce comprises a date/time stamp.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the nonce comprises a date/time stamp.
