Abstract

A device, including a computer readable medium storing executable computer instructions for implementing an application program interface (API). The API including a function call for enabling communications between a calling application and a client on the device, the client communicating with a directory server. In another aspect, there is provided a computer-readable medium, including executable computer instructions for implementing an application program interface (API) on a device. The API, including a function call for enabling communications between a calling application and a client on the device, the client communicating with a directory server.

Claims (35)

1. A method comprising:

providing an application program interface (API) between a calling application and a client on a hand-held device, the client communicating with a directory server in accordance with the lightweight directory access protocol (LDAP); and

requesting the client to terminate a connection with the directory server and with a local client database associated with the calling application, and located at the client.

2. A method of claim 1 , further comprising:

transmitting a query to the directory server on behalf of the calling application, the query identifying data used by the calling application.

3. A method of claim 1 , further comprising:

permitting the client to determine whether one or more applications on the hand-held device are configured to have data for the one or more applications automatically retrieved by the client upon the client connecting to the directory server.

4. A method of claim 1 , further comprising:

storing a preference of the calling application.

5. A method of claim 4 , wherein the preference includes a parameter to enable the calling application to have data for the calling application automatically retrieved by the client upon the client connecting to the directory server.

6. A method of claim 1 , further comprising:

retrieving a date and time since data associated with the calling application was last retrieved by the client from the directory server.

7. A method of claim 1 , wherein the hand-held device includes one of a personal digital assistant (PDA), an Internet appliance, a cellular phone, or a palmtop computer.

8. A hand-held apparatus comprising:

a calling application;

a client configured to communicate with a directory server in accordance with the lightweight directory access protocol (LDAP); and

an application program interface (API) configured to facilitate communication between the calling application and the client, wherein the API is further configured to request the client to terminate a connection with the directory server and with a local client database associated with the calling application, and located at the client.

9. An apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the API is further configured to transmit a query to the directory server on behalf of the calling application, the query identifying data used by the calling application.

10. An apparatus of claim 8 , further comprising:

one or more applications, wherein the API is further configured to permit the client to determine whether the one or more applications are configured to have data for the one or more applications automatically retrieved by the client upon the client connecting to the directory server.

11. An apparatus of claim 8 , further comprising:

a memory configured to store a preference of the calling application.

12. An apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the preference includes a parameter to enable the calling application to have data for the calling application automatically retrieved by the client upon the client connecting to the directory server.

13. An apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the API is further configured to retrieve a date and time since data associated with the calling application was last retrieved by the client from the directory server.

14. An apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the apparatus includes one of a personal digital assistant (PDA), an Internet appliance, a cellular phone, or a palmtop computer.

15. An apparatus comprising:

a processor configured to communicate with a client resident on a hand-held device using a lightweight directory access protocol (LDAP), the hand-held device being configured to execute a calling application,

wherein the hand-held device provides an application program interface (API) between the calling application and the client on a hand-held device, wherein the API is configured to request the client to terminate a connection with the apparatus and with a local client database associated with the calling application, and located at the client.

16. An apparatus of claim 15 , further comprising:

a communication interface coupled to the processor and configured to receive, via the API, a query on behalf of the calling application, the query identifying data used by the calling application.

17. An apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the hand-held device is configured to execute one or more applications, the processor being further configured to detect a connection with the client, wherein the API is further configured to permit the client to determine whether the one or more applications are configured to have data for the one or more applications automatically retrieved by the client based on the detected connection.

18. An apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the hand-held device includes a memory configured to store a preference of the calling application.

19. An apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the preference includes a parameter to enable the calling application to have data for the calling application automatically retrieved by the client upon the client connecting to the directory server.

20. An apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the API is further configured to retrieve a date and time since data associated with the calling application was last retrieved by the client from the directory server.

21. An apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the hand-held device includes one of a personal digital assistant (PDA), an Internet appliance, a cellular phone, or a palmtop computer.
