Abstract

Systems and method in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention can includes an implant comprising a first wing, a spacer extending from the first wing, and a distraction guide. The distraction guide is arranged in a first configuration to pierce and/or distract tissue associated with adjacent spinous processes extending from vertebrae of a targeted motion segment. The implant can be positioned between the adjacent spinous processes and once positioned, the implant can be arranged in a second configuration. When arranged in a second configuration, the distraction guide can act as a second wing. The first wing and the second wing can limit or block movement of the implant along a longitudinal axis of the implant.

Claims (59)

1. A method, comprising:

inserting into a body a first implant member having a distal end portion and a central portion such that the central portion is disposed between a first spinous process and a second spinous process; and

inserting into a proximal end of the first implant member a second implant member such that distal motion of the second implant member along a longitudinal axis of the first implant member moves the distal end portion of the first implant member to limit lateral movement of the first implant member relative to the first spinous process and the second spinous process after the central portion of the first implant member is disposed between the first spinous process and the second spinous process.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the distal end portion of the first implant member has a first configuration and a second configuration;

the inserting the first implant member is performed when the distal end portion of the first implant member is in the first configuration; and

the inserting the second implant member includes inserting the second implant member such that the second implant member moves the distal end portion of the first implant member from the first configuration to the second configuration.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the inserting the first implant member includes dilating a bodily tissue via the distal end portion of the first implant member.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the inserting the first implant member includes distracting a space between the first spinous process and the second spinous process via the distal end portion of the first implant member.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the inserting the second implant member includes inserting a distal end portion of the second implant member within the first implant member such that the distal end portion of the second implant member moves the distal end portion of the first implant member.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the second implant member has a distal end portion and a proximal end portion; and

the inserting the second implant member includes moving the distal end portion of the first implant member via the distal end portion of the second implant member and disposing the proximal end portion of the second implant member within an opening defined by an outer surface of the first implant member.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the second implant member has a distal end portion and a proximal end portion; and

the inserting the second implant member includes inserting the distal end portion of the second implant member within the first implant member such that the distal end portion of the second implant member moves the distal end portion of the first implant member and such that the first spinous process is disposed between the proximal end portion of the second implant member and the distal end portion of the first implant member.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the distal end portion of the first implant member includes a member movably coupled to the central portion of the first implant member; and

the inserting the second implant member includes moving the member into contact with at least one of the first spinous process or the second spinous process via a distal end portion of the second implant member.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the distal end portion of the first implant member includes a first member rotatably coupled to the central portion of the first implant member and a second member rotatably coupled to the central portion of the first implant member; and

the inserting the second implant member includes inserting the second implant member into a cavity defined by the first member and the second member such that the distal end portion of the second implant member moves the first member and the second member.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the inserting the first implant member and the inserting the second implant member are performed percutaneously via a lateral incision.

11. A method, comprising:

inserting into a body in a first direction a first implant member having a distal end portion and a central portion such that the central portion is disposed between a first spinous process and a second spinous process;

inserting into the body in the first direction a second implant member having a distal end portion and a proximal end portion; and

moving the distal end portion of the first implant member relative to the central portion of the first implant member via the distal end portion of the second implant member such that at least one of the first spinous process or the second spinous process is disposed between the distal end portion of the first implant member and the proximal end portion of the second implant member.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the moving includes inserting the distal end portion of the second implant member within the first implant member.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the moving includes moving the distal end portion of the first implant member into contact with at least one of the first spinous process or the second spinous process.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the moving includes moving the proximal end portion of the second implant member into contact with at least one of the first spinous process or the second spinous process.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the inserting the first implant member includes dilating a bodily tissue via the distal end portion of the first implant member.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein the inserting the first implant member includes distracting a space between the first spinous process and the second spinous process via the distal end portion of the first implant member.

17. The method of claim 11 , wherein:

the proximal end portion of the second implant member includes a protrusion; and

the moving includes matingly receiving the protrusion within an opening defined in an outer surface of the first implant member.

18. The method of claim 11 , wherein:

the distal end portion of the first implant member includes a member rotatably coupled to the central portion of the first implant member; and

the moving includes rotating the member via the distal end portion of the second implant member.

19. The method of claim 11 , wherein:

the distal end portion of the first implant member includes a first member rotatably coupled to the central portion of the first implant member and a second member rotatably coupled to the central portion of the first implant member;

the moving includes engaging an inner surface of the first member with the distal end portion of the second implant member such that the first member rotates relative to the central portion of the first implant member; and

the moving includes engaging an inner surface of the second member with the distal end portion of the second implant member such that the second member rotates relative to the central portion of the first implant member.

20. A method, comprising:

inserting into a body an implant having a first implant member and a second implant member such that a central portion of the first implant member is disposed between a first spinous process and a second spinous process; and

moving the second implant member longitudinally relative to the first implant member from a first longitudinal position to a second longitudinal position, a size of the distal end portion of the first implant member being less than a distance between the first spinous process and the second spinous process when the second implant member is in the first longitudinal position,

a size of the distal end portion of the first implant member being greater than the distance between the first spinous process and the second spinous process when the second implant member is in the second longitudinal position, wherein the inserting includes inserting the first implant member before inserting the second implant member.

21. The method of claim 20 , wherein the moving is performed after the inserting.

22. The method of claim 20 , wherein the inserting includes inserting the first implant member and the second implant member percutaneously via a lateral incision.

23. The method of claim 20 , wherein the moving includes moving the second implant member within a lumen defined by the first implant member.

24. The method of claim 20 , wherein the inserting includes distracting a space between the first spinous process and the second spinous process via the distal end portion of the first implant member.

25. The method of claim 20 , wherein the moving includes moving a distal end portion of the second member into engagement with a portion of the distal end portion of the first implant member.

26. The method of claim 20 , wherein the moving includes disposing matingly a proximal end portion of the second implant member within an opening defined by an outer surface of the first implant member.

27. The method of claim 20 , wherein the moving includes moving the second implant member within the first implant member such that the first spinous process is disposed between a proximal end portion of the second implant member and the distal end portion of the first implant member.

28. The method of claim 20 , wherein:

the distal end portion of the first implant member includes a member rotatably coupled to the central portion of the first implant member; and

the moving includes rotating the member via a distal end portion of the second implant member.

29. The method of claim 20 , wherein:

the distal end portion of the first implant member includes a first member rotatably coupled to the central portion of the first implant member and a second member rotatably coupled to the central portion of the first implant member; and

the moving includes moving the second implant member such that a distal end portion of the second implant member engages an inner surface of the first member and an inner surface of the second member to move the distal end portion of the first implant member relative to the central portion of the first implant member.
