Abstract

An apparatus for delivering energy to tissue including an elongate flexible shaft having a proximal end and a distal end; at least one electrode operably connected to the elongate flexible shaft; and means for selectively adjusting a geometry the distal end of the flexible shaft and/or the at least one electrode.

Claims (20)

1 . An apparatus for delivering energy to tissue, comprising:

an elongate flexible shaft having a proximal end and a distal end;

at least one electrode operably connected to the elongate flexible shaft; and

means for selectively adjusting a geometry of at least one of said distal end of said flexible shaft and said at least one electrode.

2 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said adjustment means comprises at least one adjustment zone provided on said at least one electrode.

3 . The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein said at least one electrode comprises at least two segments with one said segment being moveable relative to another said segment, said adjustment zone selectively moving one said segment relative to another said segment.

4 . The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein said at least one electrode comprises at least two electrodes with one said electrode being moveable relative to another said electrode, said adjustment zone selectively moving one said electrode relative to another said electrode.

5 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said adjustment means comprises at least one adjustment zone provided on said flexible shaft proximate said distal end, said adjustment zone adjusting one of a geometry and angular orientation of said distal end of said flexible shaft.

6 . The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

a flexible substrate mounted to a distal end of said flexible shaft, said at least one electrode mounted on said substrate;

said adjustment means comprises at least one adjustment zone provided on said substrate.

7 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said adjustment means comprises a shaped memory metal having an initial shape and a native shape different from said initial shape, said shaped memory metal being selectively adjusted from said initial shape to said native shape when heated past a transition temperature.

8 . The apparatus of claim 5 , comprising a plurality of adjustment zones on said distal end of said flexible shaft.

9 . The apparatus of claim 2 , comprising a plurality of adjustment zones on said at least one electrode.

10 . The apparatus of claim 4 , comprising a plurality of adjustment zones on said at least two electrodes.

11 . The apparatus of claim 1 , comprising a plurality of adjustment zones on said distal end of said flexible member.

12 . The apparatus of claim 1 , comprising a plurality of adjustment zones on said substrate.

13 . A method for selectively adjusting in situ a geometry of an electrode, comprising:

providing an elongate catheter having an electrode at a distal end thereof, and at least one adjustment zone on at least one of said catheter and said electrode;

selectively adjusting a geometry of said at least one adjustment zone in situ by heating said adjustment zone above a transition temperature.
