Abstract

Devices, systems, and methods treat cosmetic defects, and often apply cooling with at least one tissue-penetrating probe inserted through of the skin of a patient. The cooling may remodel one or more target tissue so as to effect a desired change in a composition of the target tissue and/or a change in its behavior. Exemplary embodiments of the cooling treatments will interfere with the nerve/muscle contractile function chain so as to mitigate wrinkles of the skin. Related treatments may be used therapeutically for treatment of back and other muscle spasms, chronic pain, and the like. Some embodiments may remodel subcutaneous adipose tissue so as to alter a shape or appearance of the skin surface.

Claims (13)

1. A system for treating a target tissue of a patient, the system comprising:

a body comprising a handpiece having a size and shape suitable for supporting in a hand of an operator, and at least one cooling fluid supply path disposed in the handpiece;

a probe coupled to the body, the probe comprising a probe body and an array of tissue penetrating needles coupled thereto, wherein each tissue penetrating needle comprises a proximal portion, a distal portion, a lumen therebetween in fluid communication with the cooling fluid supply path, the array of tissue penetrating needles extending distally from the probe body and insertable into a target tissue of a patient through a skin surface, wherein at least some of the tissue penetrating needles comprise a fused silica supply tube extending into the tissue penetrating needle lumen;

a cooling fluid source comprising a single-use cartridge contained in the handpiece, the cooling fluid source coupleable to the fluid supply path, such that when cooling is initiated, direct cooling fluid flows into the penetrating needle lumens so as to cool the target tissue below the skin surface to remodel the target tissue thereby temporarily inhibiting contraction of a muscle and reducing appearance of lines and wrinkles in the face associated with contraction of the muscle; and

an electric heater element having a skin engaging surface, the heater element adjacent the distal end of one or more of the probes, the heater element directing heat energy into the skin to protect the skin surface from injury caused by the cooling.

2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a controller coupled to the cooling fluid supply path, the controller comprising instructions that, if executed, cause the system to direct a cooling energy into the target tissue through the array of tissue penetrating needles, the cooling energy selected to remodel the target tissue and alter a surface of the patient's skin.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the controller is configured to control at least one of treatment time or treatment temperature.

4. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a power source, wherein the power source comprises a battery positioned within the body.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the single-use cartridge contains a quantity of the cooling fluid sufficient to treat a region of a single patient, but the quantity of cooling fluid is less than sufficient to treat two or more patients.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the electric heater element further comprises a heat sink or an insulator.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the handpiece is self-contained.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the skin engaging surface directs heat energy into the skin to protect the skin surface from injury caused by the cooling.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the heater element heats one or more of the tissue penetrating needles, and the one or more heated tissue penetrating needles protect the skin surface from injury caused by the cooling.
