Abstract

A system for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system is disclosed. The system includes a data acquisition component, an analytics server, a control element and a client terminal. The data acquisition component is communicatively connected to a sensor configured to acquire real-time data output from the electrical system. The analytics server is communicatively connected to the data acquisition component and is comprised of a virtual system modeling engine, an analytics engine and a power flow optimization engine. The virtual system modeling engine is configured to generate predicted data output for the electrical system utilizing a virtual system model of the electrical system. The control element is interfaced with an electrical system component and communicatively connected to the analytics server. The client terminal is communicatively connected to the analytics server.

Claims (75)

1. A system for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, comprising:

a data acquisition component communicatively connected to a sensor configured to acquire real-time data output from the electrical system;

an analytics server communicatively connected to the data acquisition component, comprising

a virtual system modeling engine configured to generate predicted data output for the electrical system utilizing a virtual system model of the electrical system,

an analytics engine configured to monitor the real-time data output and the predicted data output of the electrical system in real-time, the analytics engine further configured to initiate a calibration and synchronization operation to update the virtual system model in real-time when a difference between the real-time data output and the predicted data output exceeds a threshold, wherein the calibration and synchronization operation comprises adjusting operational parameters of the virtual system model that replicate operation of the sensor based on real-time output acquired from the sensor, and

a power flow optimization engine configured to utilize the virtual system model to generate system control parameters that optimize power resources on the electrical system;

a control element interfaced with an electrical system component and communicatively connected to the analytics server, the control element configured to receive the system control parameters and effectuate changes to operational settings of the electrical system component; and

a client terminal communicatively connected to the analytics server, the client terminal configured to communicate the system control parameters and to change a configuration setting of the power flow optimization engine.

2. The system for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 1 , wherein the configuration setting is an optimization objective.

3. The system for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 2 , wherein the optimization objective is the minimization of total system power losses.

4. The system for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 2 , wherein the optimization objective is the minimization of power generation costs.

5. The system for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 2 , wherein the optimization objective is the minimization of load shedding.

6. The system for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 2 , wherein the optimization objective is the optimization of generator voltage profiles.

7. The system for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 2 , wherein the optimization objective is the minimization of reactive power resource allocation costs.

8. The system for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 2 , wherein the optimization objective is the minimization of controls movements.

9. The system for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 2 , wherein the optimization objective is the maximization of active power flow on the electrical system.

10. The system for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 2 , wherein the optimization objective is the maximization of loads at a group of buses.

11. The system for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 2 , wherein the optimization objective is the maximization of active power transfer between two groups of buses.

12. The system for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 2 , wherein the optimization objective is the minimization of swing bus generation.

13. The system for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 1 , wherein the configuration setting is a system control device optimization setting.

14. The system for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 13 , wherein the system control device optimization setting is a generator setting controlling active power output.

15. The system for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 13 , wherein the system control device optimization setting is a transformer tap setting.

16. The system for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 13 , wherein the system control device optimization setting is a scheduled generator voltage setting.

17. The system for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 13 , wherein the system control device optimization setting is a scheduled capacitor/reactor voltage setting.

18. The system for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 13 , wherein the system control device optimization setting is a load shedding and interruption scheme.

19. The system for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 1 , wherein the configuration setting is a control device operational constraint.

20. The system for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 19 , wherein the control device operational constraint is a normal bus voltage limit.

21. The system for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 19 , wherein the control device operational constraint is an emergency bus voltage limit.

22. The system for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 19 , wherein the control device operational constraint is a cable/line loading limit.

23. The system for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 19 , wherein the control device operational constraint is a transformer loading limit.

24. The system for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 19 , wherein the control device operational constraint is a generator reactive power (MVAr) output limit.

25. The system for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 19 , wherein the control device operational constraint is a generator active power (MV) output limit.

26. The system for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 19 , wherein the control device operational constraint is a switchable capacitor/reactor limit.

27. The system for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 1 , wherein the system control parameters include a generator setting controlling active power output.

28. The system for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 1 , wherein the system control parameters include a transformer tap setting.

29. The system for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 1 , wherein the system control parameters include a scheduled generator voltage setting.

30. The system for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 1 , wherein the system control parameters include a scheduled capacitor/reactor voltage setting.

31. The system for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 1 , wherein the system control parameters include a load shedding and interruption scheme.

32. A method for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, comprising:

acquiring real-time data from a sensor, the sensor configured to acquire the real-time data from the electrical system;

updating a virtual system model of the electrical system in response to real-time data, wherein updating the virtual system model further comprises

identifying differences between the real-time data and predicted data output generated using the virtual system model in real-time, and

initiating a calibration and synchronization operation to update the virtual system model in real-time if the differences exceed a threshold, wherein the calibration and synchronization operation comprises adjusting operating parameters of the virtual system model that replicate operation of the sensor based on the real-time data acquired from the sensor;

receiving the updated virtual system model;

selecting optimization settings;

generating system control parameters to optimize the utilization of power resources on the electrical system and that are responsive to the optimization settings; and

adjusting one or more operational settings of an element of the electrical system based on the system control parameters generated.

33. The method for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 32 , wherein the selection of optimization settings further includes selecting control devices and control modes to optimize.

34. The method for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 33 , wherein the control device is a power generator.

35. The method for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 33 , wherein the control device is a transformer.

36. The method for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 33 , wherein the control device is a capacitor/reactor.

37. The method for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 33 , wherein the control device is a system load controller.

38. The method for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 33 , wherein the optimization settings are constrained by one or more device limitations of the control devices.

39. The method for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 38 , wherein the one or more device limitations comprise a normal bus voltage limit.

40. The method for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 38 , wherein the one or more device limitations comprise an emergency bus voltage limit.

41. The method for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 38 , wherein the one or more device limitations comprise a cable/line loading limit.

42. The method for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 38 , wherein the one or more device limitations comprise a transformer loading limit.

43. The method for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 38 , wherein the one or more device limitations comprise a generator reactive power (MVAr) output limit.

44. The method for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 38 , wherein the one or more device limitations comprise a generator active power (MV) output limit.

45. The method for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 38 , wherein the one or more device limitations comprise a switchable reactor/capacitor limit.

46. The method for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 32 , wherein the selection of optimization settings further includes selecting an optimization objective.

47. The method for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 46 , wherein the optimization objective is minimization of total system power losses.

48. The method for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 46 , wherein the optimization objective is minimization of power generation costs.

49. The method for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 46 , wherein the optimization objective is minimization of system load shedding.

50. The method for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 46 , wherein the optimization objective is minimization of reactive power resource allocation costs.

54. The method for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 46 , wherein the optimization objective is maximization of loads at a group of buses.

55. The method for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 46 , wherein the optimization objective is maximization of active power flow on the electrical system.

56. The method for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 32 , wherein the one or more operational settings comprise a generator setting controlling active power output.

57. The method for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 32 , wherein the one or more operational settings comprise a transformer tap setting.

58. The method for real-time optimization of power resources on an electrical system, as recited in claim 32 , wherein the one or more operational settings comprise a scheduled generator voltage setting.
