Abstract

A system for supporting patient care equipment alongside a patient support is provided. In one embodiment, the system includes a plurality of arms supported by a support structure. The arms may be pivoted to either side of the patient support. The arms may be stored in a console. At least one of the arms may carry service conduits that provide medical air, oxygen, vacuum, nitrogen, nitrous oxide, or electricity.

Claims (18)

1. A patient care equipment support system for use in a room having a ceiling, the patient care equipment support system comprising

a first arm mounted to the ceiling for pivotable movement, the first arm extending generally horizontally and carrying a first patient care equipment column,

a second arm mounted to the ceiling for pivotable movement, the second arm extending generally horizontally and carrying a second patient care equipment column, at least one of the first and second arms being a telescopic arm that is extendable and retractable, the at least one telescopic arm being of non-round cross section when sectioned perpendicular to its length,

a plurality of service lines routed through the at least one telescopic arm, and

an energy chain situated in an interior region of the at least one telescopic arm, the plurality of service lines being grouped together inside the energy chain, the energy chain having a series of pivotably interconnected movable links of similar size and shape, the energy chain managing the movement of the plurality of service lines within the interior region as the at least one telescopic arm extends and retracts so that the plurality of service lines each are controlled by the energy chain to form an S-shaped pattern that is substantially the same for all of the plurality of service lines.

2. The patient care equipment support system of claim 1 , wherein the first arm is pivotable about a first axis and the second arm is pivotable about a second axis that is spaced from and generally parallel to the first axis.

3. The patient care equipment support system of claim 1 , wherein each of the first and second patient care equipment columns have at least one service outlet mounted thereon.

4. The patient care equipment support system of claim 3 , wherein the at least one service line of the plurality of service lines is routed to the at least one service outlet on the first patient care equipment column.

5. The patient care equipment support system of claim 1 , wherein both of the first and second arms are telescopic arms.

6. The patient care equipment support system of claim 1 , wherein the first arm is movable in a first generally horizontal plane and the second arm is movable in a second generally horizontal plane that is spaced from the first generally horizontal plane.

7. The patient care equipment support system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first and second arms is a fixed length arm.

8. The patient care equipment support system of claim 1 , wherein the first arm has a first mount end and a first distal end, the first mount end is coupled to the ceiling, and the first patient care equipment column is coupled to the first distal end of the first arm.

9. The patient care equipment support system of claim 8 , wherein the first arm is telescopic and the first distal end moves away from the first mount end when the first arm extends and the first distal end moves toward the first mount end when the first arm retracts.

10. The patient care equipment support system of claim 8 , wherein the second arm has a second mount end and a second distal end, the second mount end is coupled to the ceiling, and the second patient care equipment column is coupled to the second distal end of the second arm.

11. The patient care equipment support system of claim 8 , wherein the first patient care equipment column is situated underneath the first distal end.

12. The patient care equipment support system of claim 8 , wherein the first patient care equipment column extends vertically downwardly from the first distal end.

13. The patient care equipment support system of claim 1 , wherein the first patient care equipment column extends vertically downwardly from the first arm and the second patient care equipment column extends vertically downwardly from the second arm.

14. The patient care equipment support system of claim 1 , wherein one of the first and second arms is spaced from the ceiling by an amount that is greater than the distance by which the other of the first and second arms is spaced from the ceiling.
