Abstract

A spine distraction implant alleviates pain associated with spinal stenosis and facet arthropathy by expanding the volume in the spine canal and/or neural foramen. The implant provides a spinal extension stop while allowing freedom of spinal flexion.

Claims (48)

1 . An apparatus, comprising:

a spacer configured to be disposed between a first spinous process and a second spinous process adjacent the first spinous process, the spacer having a first end portion configured to contact the first spinous process when the spacer is disposed between the first spinous process and the second spinous process, the first end portion defining a first opening and a second opening; and

an elongate member having a first portion configured to be disposed within the first opening, a second portion configured to couple the spacer to the first spinous process and a third portion configured to be disposed within the second opening.

2 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the first end portion of the spacer is moveable relative to a second end portion of the spacer, the second end portion of the spacer being opposite of the first end portion of the spacer.

3 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein:

the elongate member has a first end and a second end opposite the first end of the elongate member;

the first portion of the elongate member is between the first end of the elongate member and the second portion of the elongate member; and

the third portion of the elongate member is between the second end of the elongate member and the second portion of the elongate member.

4 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the second portion of the elongate member is between the first portion of the elongate member and the third portion of the elongate member.

The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first end portion of the spacer defines a saddle shape having a first extended portion and a second extended portion, the first opening being defined by the first extended portion of the first end portion, the second opening being defined by the second extended portion of the first end portion.

6 . An apparatus, comprising:

a spacer configured to be disposed between a first spinous process and a second spinous process adjacent the first spinous process, the spacer having a first end portion configured to contact the first spinous process when the spacer is disposed between the first spinous process and the second spinous process, at least a portion of the first end portion being moveable relative to a second end portion of the spacer opposite of the first end portion of the spacer; and

a flexible tether coupled to the first end portion of the spacer.

7 . The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the flexible tether is configured to surround at least a portion of the first spinous process when the spacer is disposed between the first spinous process and the second spinous process.

8 . The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the second end portion of the spacer is configured to contact the second spinous process when the spacer is disposed between the first spinous process and the second spinous process.

9 . The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein:

the first end of the spacer has a saddle shape including a first extended portion and a second extended portion;

the flexible tether includes a first portion, a second portion and a third portion, the first portion of the flexible tether is coupled to the first extended portion of the first end portion of the spacer, the third portion of the flexible tether is coupled to the second extended portion of the first end portion of the spacer, the second portion of the flexible tether is between the first portion of the flexible tether and the third portion of the flexible tether; and

the second portion of the flexible tether surrounding at least a portion of the first spinous process when the spacer is disposed between the first spinous process and the second spinous process.

10 . The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein:

the spacer includes a rotatable portion configured to receive a tool, the portion of the first end portion moves relative to the second end portion of the spacer when the rotatable portion is rotated via the tool.

11 . A method comprising:

inserting at least a portion of a spacer between a first spinous process and a second spinous process opposite the first spinous process;

coupling an elongate member to at least a portion of the first spinous process, the elongate member being coupled to the spacer; and

moving at least a portion of a first end portion of the spacer relative to a second end portion of the spacer opposite the first end portion of the spacer.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein:

the first end portion of the spacer contacts the first spinous process after the inserting;

the second end portion of the spacer contacts the second spinous process after the inserting; and

the elongate member is coupled to the first end portion of the spacer.

13 . The method of claim 11 , wherein:

the first end of the spacer has a saddle shape including a first extended portion and a second extended portion;

the elongate member is a flexible tether including a first portion, a second portion and a third portion, the first portion of the flexible tether is coupled to the first extended portion of the first end portion of the spacer, the third portion of the flexible tether is coupled to the second extended portion of the first end portion of the spacer, the second portion of the flexible tether is between the first portion of the flexible tether and the third portion of the flexible tether; and

the second portion of the flexible tether surrounding the portion of the first spinous process after the positioning.

14 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the moving includes rotating a portion of the spacer such that the portion of the first end portion of the spacer is moved relative to the second end portion of the spacer.

15 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the inserting is performed while leaving the supraspinous ligament intact.

16 . The method of claim 11 , wherein:

the elongate member has a first portion disposed within a first opening of the spacer, a second portion coupled the spacer to the first spinous process after the coupling and a third portion disposed within a second opening of the spacer.

17 . The method of claim 11 , wherein:

the elongate member has a first portion disposed within a first opening of the spacer, a second portion coupled the spacer to the first spinous process after the coupling and a third portion disposed within a second opening of the spacer;

the elongate member has a first end and a second end opposite the first end of the elongate member;

the first portion of the elongate member is between the first end of the elongate member and the second portion of the elongate member; and

the third portion of the elongate member is between the second end of the elongate member and the second portion of the elongate member.

18 . The method of claim 11 , wherein:

the elongate member has a first portion disposed within a first opening of the spacer, a second portion coupled the spacer to the first spinous process after the coupling and a third portion disposed within a second opening of the spacer;

the second portion of the elongate member is between the first portion of the elongate member and the third portion of the elongate member.

19 . The method of claim 11 , wherein:

the elongate member has a first portion disposed within a first opening of the spacer, a second portion coupled the spacer to the first spinous process after the coupling and a third portion disposed within a second opening of the spacer;

the first end portion of the spacer defines a saddle shape having a first extended portion and a second extended portion, the first opening being defined by the first extended portion of the first end portion, the second opening being defined by the second extended portion of the first end portion.
