Method and system for determining and sharing a user's web presence
View Patent ↗A method and system for determining and sharing a user's web presence have been disclosed. According to one embodiment, a computer implemented method comprises providing web presence information associated with a first user from a first computer having a first software module. The web presence information is received at a second computer. The web presence information is used to dynamically inform a second user communicating with the second computer of a website that the first user is viewing.
1. A computer-implemented method, comprising:
receiving from a first user, using one or more processors, permission rules for a list of other users that have permission to view types of websites where the first user has a web presence;
receiving from a first website, using the one or more processors, web presence information associated with the first user visiting the first website including one or more of information identifying the first user, information indicative of a duration of the first user's visit to the first website, a uniform resource locator or a name of a web page visited by the first user at the first website, and a representative image of the first website;
determining, using the one or more processors, whether a second user has permission to receive a notification that the first user is visiting the first website based on the permission rules and the web presence information;
generating, using the one or more processors, statistics for use in advertising based on the web presence information; and
sending the statistics to a third-party website.
2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:
receiving an advertisement from the third-party website based on the statistics; and
providing the advertisement to the first user for display.
3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising determining whether the second user is currently active and wherein the notification includes a name of the first website where the second user is currently active.
4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the web presence information is generated by a module and wherein the web presence information is written using a JavaScript or Flash script.
5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 further comprising:
generating, using the one or more processors, an instant messaging session between the first user and the second user; and
wherein the permission rules specify that the second user receives the notification after the instant messaging session begins.
6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the permission rules include limiting the web presence information to non-secure websites and restricting the web presence information from being associated with secure websites.
7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising presenting advertising to the first user based on the web presence information.
8. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising redirecting the second user to the first website visited by the first user.
9. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising presenting the first user with a preferences panel through which access to the web presence information is controlled.
10. A non-transitory computer-readable medium having stored thereon a computer-readable program that, when executed on a computer, causes the computer to:
receive from a first user permission rules for a list of other users that have permission to view types of websites where the first user has a web presence;
receive from a first website web presence information associated with the first user visiting the first website including one or more of information identifying the first user, information indicative of a duration of the first user's visit to the first website, a uniform resource locator or a name of a web page visited by the first user at the first website, and a representative image of the first website;
determine whether a second user has permission to receive a notification that the first user is visiting the first website based on the permission rules and the web presence information;
generate statistics for use in advertising based on the web presence information; and
send the statistics to a third-party website.
11. The computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the computer-readable program is further configured to cause the computer to:
receive an advertisement from the third-party website based on the statistics; and
provide the advertisement to the first user for display.
12. The computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the computer-readable program is further configured to cause the computer to:
generate an instant messaging session between the first user and the second user; and
wherein the permission rules specify that the second user receives the notification after the instant messaging session begins.
13. The computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the permission rules include limiting the web presence information to non-secure websites and restricting the web presence information from being associated with secure websites.
14. The computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the permission is based on a reciprocal connection between the first and second users.
15. The computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the computer-readable program is further configured to cause the computer to redirect the second user to the first website visited by the first user.
16. The computer-readable medium of claim 10 wherein the computer-readable program is further configured to cause the computer to present the first user with a preferences panel through which access to the web presence information is controlled.
17. A system comprising:
a processor; and
a memory storing instructions that, when executed, cause the system to:
receive from a first user permission rules for a list of other users that have permission to view types of websites where the first user has a web presence;
receive from a first website web presence information associated with the first user visiting the first website including one or more of information identifying the first user, information indicative of a duration of the first user's visit to the first website, a uniform resource locator or a name of a web page visited by the first user at the first website, and a representative image of the first website;
determine whether a second user has permission to receive a notification that the first user is visiting the first website based on the permission rules and the web presence information;
generate statistics for use in advertising based on the web presence information; and
send the statistics to a third-party website.
18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the web presence information is generated by a module and wherein the system receives from the module profile information associated with the first user if the first user is a registered user of a first computer.
19. The system of claim 17 , wherein the system is further configured to determine whether the second user is currently active and wherein the notification includes a name of the first website where the second user is currently active.
20. The system of claim 17 , wherein the system is further configured to:
generate an instant messaging session between the first user and the second user; and
wherein the permission rules specify that the second user receives the notification after the instant messaging session begins.
