Abstract

An electrical connector including a body having first and second connector portions. A locking clip coupled to the body facilitates a snap-fit engagement of the body with an associated receptacle opening.

Claims (27)

1. An electrical connector comprising:

a body including a first connector portion and a second connector portion, said first connector portion comprising a plurality of first connector terminals, said second connector portion being separate from said first connector portion and comprising a plurality of second connector terminals; and

at least one locking clip, said locking clip comprising

an attachment portion coupled to said body, and

a resilient member, said resilient member extending from said attachment portion and having an un-deflected position angled away from said attachment portion, said resilient member being resiliently deflectable toward said attachment portion, whereby upon insertion of said body into an associated opening of a mating receptacle said resiliently member is configured to deflect inward toward said attachment portion as said resilient member is forced against a margin of said opening and at least a portion of said resilient member is configured to recover toward said un-deflected position when inserted past said margin to thereby restrict removal of said body from said opening;

wherein said resilient member comprising a plurality of fingers at an end thereof, at least one of said fingers being configured to recover to a position beyond said opening when inserted past said margin while another one of said fingers is configured to bear against said margin.

2. An electrical connector according to claim 1 , said resilient member comprising a plurality of fingers at an end thereof, at least one of said fingers being sorter than another one of said fingers.

3. An electrical connector according to claim 1 , said resilient member comprising first and second long fingers and a short finger disposed between said first and second long fingers, said short finger being shorter than said first and second long fingers.

4. An electrical connector according to claim 1 , wherein said attachment portion is received in an associated recess in said body.

5. An electrical connector according to claim 1 , wherein each of said first connector terminals comprises a connector portion and a terminal extension; and wherein each of said first connector terminals is coupled to an associated one of said second connector terminals at a different associated distance from a top of one of said second connector terminals by way of a layered arrangement of said terminal extensions.

6. An electrical connector according to claim 1 , wherein said first connector portion comprises a four-way connector comprising four of said first connector terminals and said second connector portion comprises a seven-way connector comprising seven of said second connector terminals.

7. An electrical connector according to claim 1 , said connector further comprising:

a first cover pivotally coupled to said body adjacent said first connector portion;

a second cover pivotally coupled to said body adjacent said second connector portion; and

a biasing element biasing said first cover toward a closed position relative to said first connector portion and biasing said second cover toward a closed position relative to said second connector portion.

8. An electrical connector according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of said first connector terminals or said second connector terminals comprises a tubular member comprising a slot extending axially along at least a portion of said tubular member; and wherein said connector further comprises a resiliently expandable member disposed around said tubular member.

9. An electrical connector according to claim 4 , wherein said attachment portion comprises a resilient tab configured to deflect upon insertion of said attachment portion into said recess and then recover toward an un-deflected position of said resilient tab to resist removal of said attachment portion from said body.

10. An electrical connector according to claim 5 , said connector comprising a first number of said first connector terminals and a second number of said second connector terminals, said second number being greater than said first number.

11. An electrical connector according to claim 5 , wherein at least one of said first connector terminals comprises a contact pad and said second connector terminal associated with said one of said first connector terminals comprises a contact flange, said contact pad being directly coupled to said contact flange.

12. An electrical connector according to claim 11 , wherein said contact pad and said contact flange are resistance welded together.

13. An electrical connector according to claim 7 , wherein said biasing element comprises a spring applying a biasing force to said first cover and to said second cover.

14. An electrical connector according to claim 7 , wherein when one of said first and second cover is in an open position, pivotal movement of the other of said first and second cover is restricted.

15. An electrical connector according to claim 7 , wherein opening one of said first cover and said second cover prevents opening the other of said first cover and said second cover.

16. An electrical connector according to claim 7 , wherein said first and second cover are pivotally coupled about a pin disposed between said first and second connector portions.

17. An electrical connector according to claim 8 , wherein said resiliently expandable member comprises a coil spring.

18. An electrical connector according to claim 8 , wherein said resiliently expandable member biases said terminal to a contracted condition.

19. An electrical connector according to claim 8 , wherein adjacent ones of said first connector terminals or said second connector terminals comprises an associated one of said tubular members, and wherein said connector comprises a plurality of said resiliently expandable members, each of said resiliently expandable members being disposed around an associated one of said tubular members and being offset along the length of said associated one of said tubular members relative to one another.
