Abstract

The present invention relates to a composition having a first response to a first electromagnetic radiation and, after intermediate exposure to a second electromagnetic radiation, a second response to the first electromagnetic radiation, different from the first response. In one aspect, the composition exhibits a regenerated first response to the first electromagnetic radiation after exposure to a third electromagnetic radiation.

Claims (85)

1. A composition comprising

(a) a host material selected from the group consisting of Y 2 O 3 , Y 2 GdAl 5 O 12 , Y 3 Al 5 O 12 , Y 3 Al 4 GaO 12 , YBO 3 , Y 0.76 Gd 0.24 BO 3 , YPO 4 , Y 2 SiO 5 , LaBO 3 , LaPO 4 , La 2 O 3 , LaAlO 3 , LuAlO 3 , La 3 Al 5 O 12 , La 2 SiO 5 , ZnB 2 O 4 , a glass, SrAl 2 O 4 , a sulfide, a fluoride, an oxynitride, an oxysulfide, an oxyfluoride, a borosilicate, a thioaluminate, a thiogallate, a germinate, a stannate, a vanadate, a molybdate, a tungstate, and ReP 5 O 14 , where Re is a rare earth element;

(b) a first dopant comprising Yb; and

(c) a second dopant comprising Ce,

wherein the composition has a first response to a first electromagnetic radiation and, after intermediate exposure to a second electromagnetic radiation, a second response to the first electromagnetic radiation, different from the first response, and

wherein the composition comprises agglomerated nanoparticles.

2. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the first response and the second response comprise electromagnetic radiation emissions.

3. The composition of claim 2 , wherein the first response and the second response comprise luminescent emissions.

4. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the first electromagnetic radiation has a wavelength that is in the infrared spectrum.

5. The composition of claim 4 , wherein the wavelength is from about 800 nm to about 1000 nm.

6. The composition of claim 5 , wherein the first electromagnetic radiation is low intensity infrared electromagnetic radiation.

7. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the first electromagnetic radiation has a wavelength that is in the visible spectrum.

8. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the first electromagnetic radiation has a wavelength that is in the UV spectrum.

9. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the second electromagnetic radiation has a wavelength that is in the ultraviolet spectrum.

10. The composition of claim 9 , wherein the wavelength is from about 250 nm to about 270 nm.

11. The composition of claim 10 , wherein the electromagnetic radiation is high intensity ultraviolet electromagnetic radiation.

12. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition exhibits a regenerated first response to the first electromagnetic radiation after exposure to a third electromagnetic radiation.

13. The composition of claim 12 , wherein the third electromagnetic radiation has a wavelength that is in the infrared spectrum.

14. The composition of claim 13 , wherein the wavelength is from about 1300 nm to about 6000 nm.

15. The composition of claim 14 , wherein the electromagnetic radiation is high intensity infrared electromagnetic radiation.

16. The composition of claim 14 , wherein the third electromagnetic radiation has a wavelength that is in the ultraviolet spectrum.

17. The composition of claim 16 , wherein the wavelength is from about 350 nm to about 370 nm.

18. The composition of claim 17 , wherein the electromagnetic radiation is high intensity ultraviolet electromagnetic radiation.

19. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises particles that are substantially spherical.

20. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises particles that are faceted.

21. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises particles that are not jagged.

22. The composition of claim 1 , further comprising a sensitizer.

23. The composition of claim 1 , further comprising a UV blocking material.

24. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises particles and at least about 90 volume percent of the particles are not larger than twice the average particle size.

25. A composition comprising (a) a host material selected from the group consisting of Y 2 O 3 , Y 2 GdAl 5 O 12 , Y 3 Al 5 O 12 , Y 3 Al 4 GaO 12 , YBO 3 , Y 0.76 Gd 0.24 BO 3 , YPO 4 , Y 2 SiO 5 , LaBO 3 , LaPO 4 , La 2 O 3 , LaAl 0 3 , LuAlO 3 , La 3 Al 5 O 12 , La 2 SiO 5 , ZnB 2 O 4 , a glass, SrAl 2 O 4 , a sulfide, a fluoride, an oxynitride, an oxysulfide, an oxyfluoride, a borosilicate, a thioaluminate, a thiogallate, a germinate, a stannate, a vanadate, a molybdate, a tungstate, and ReP 5 O 14 , where Re is a rare earth element;

(b) a first dopant comprising Yb; and

(c) a second dopant comprising Ce,

wherein the composition has a first response to a first electromagnetic radiation and, after intermediate exposure to a second electromagnetic radiation, a second response to the first electromagnetic radiation, different from the first response, and

wherein the composition comprises particles that are substantially spherical.

26. The composition of claim 25 , wherein the first response and the second response comprise electromagnetic radiation emissions.

27. The composition of claim 26 , wherein the first response and the second response comprise luminescent emissions.

28. The composition of claim 25 , wherein the first electromagnetic radiation has a wavelength that is in the infrared spectrum.

29. The composition of claim 25 , wherein the first electromagnetic radiation has a wavelength that is in the visible spectrum.

30. The composition of claim 25 , wherein the first electromagnetic radiation has a wavelength that is in the UV spectrum.

31. The composition of claim 25 , wherein the second electromagnetic radiation has a wavelength that is in the ultraviolet spectrum.

32. The composition of claim 25 , wherein the composition exhibits a regenerated first response to the first electromagnetic radiation after exposure to a third electromagnetic radiation.

33. The composition of claim 32 , wherein the third electromagnetic radiation has a wavelength that is in the infrared spectrum.

34. The composition of claim 32 , wherein the third electromagnetic radiation has a wavelength that is in the ultraviolet spectrum.

35. The composition of claim 25 , wherein the particles are faceted.

36. The composition of claim 25 , wherein the particles are not jagged.

37. The composition of claim 25 , further comprising a sensitizer.

38. The composition of claim 25 , further comprising a UV blocking material.

39. The composition of claim 25 , wherein at least about 90 volume percent of the particles are not larger than twice the average particle size.

40. A composition comprising

(a) a host material selected from the group consisting of Y 2 O 3 , Y 2 GdAl 5 O 12 , Y 3 Al 5 O 12 , Y 3 Al 4 GaO 12 , YBO 3 , Y 0.76 Gd 0.24 BO 3 , YPO 4 , Y 2 SiO 5 , LaBO 3 , LaPO 4 , La 2 O 3 , LaAlO 3 , LuAlO 3 , La 3 Al 5 O 12 , La 2 SiO 5 , ZnB 2 O 4 , a glass, SrAl 2 O 4 , a sulfide, a fluoride, an oxynitride, an oxysulfide, an oxyfluoride, a borosilicate, a thioaluminate, a thiogallate, a germinate, a stannate, a vanadate, a molybdate, a tungstate, and ReP 5 O 14 , where Re is a rare earth element;

(b) a first dopant comprising Yb; and

(c) a second dopant comprising Ce,

wherein the composition has a first response to a first electromagnetic radiation and, after intermediate exposure to a second electromagnetic radiation, a second response to the first electromagnetic radiation, different from the first response, and

wherein the composition comprises a UV blocking material.

41. The composition of claim 40 , wherein the first response and the second response comprise electromagnetic radiation emissions.

42. The composition of claim 41 , wherein the first response and the second response comprise luminescent emissions.

43. The composition of claim 40 , wherein the first electromagnetic radiation has a wavelength that is in the infrared spectrum.

44. The composition of claim 40 , wherein the first electromagnetic radiation has a wavelength that is in the visible spectrum.

45. The composition of claim 40 , wherein the first electromagnetic radiation has a wavelength that is in the UV spectrum.

46. The composition of claim 40 , wherein the second electromagnetic radiation has a wavelength that is in the ultraviolet spectrum.

47. The composition of claim 40 , wherein the composition exhibits a regenerated first response to the first electromagnetic radiation after exposure to a third electromagnetic radiation.

48. The composition of claim 47 , wherein the third electromagnetic radiation has a wavelength that is in the infrared spectrum.

49. The composition of claim 47 , wherein the third electromagnetic radiation has a wavelength that is in the ultraviolet spectrum.

50. The composition of claim 40 , wherein the composition comprises particles that are faceted.

51. The composition of claim 40 , wherein the composition comprises particles that are not jagged.

52. The composition of claim 40 , further comprising a sensitizer.

53. The composition of claim 40 , wherein the composition comprises particles and at least about 90 volume percent of the particles are not larger than twice the average particle size.

54. A composition comprising

(a) a host material selected from the group consisting of Y 2 O 3 , Y 2 GdAl 5 O 12 , Y 3 Al 5 O 12 , Y 3 Al 4 GaO 12 , YBO 3 , Y 0.76 Gd 0.24 BO 3 , YPO 4 , Y 2 SiO 5 , LaBO 3 , LaPO 4 , La 2 O 3 , LaAlO 3 , LuAlO 3 , La 3 Al 5 O 12 , La 2 SiO 5 , ZnB 2 O 4 , a glass, SrAl 2 O 4 , a sulfide, a fluoride, an oxynitride, an oxysulfide, an oxyfluoride, a borosilicate, a thioaluminate, a thiogallate, a germinate, a stannate, a vanadate, a molybdate, a tungstate, and ReP 5 O 14 , where Re is a rare earth element;

(b) a first dopant comprising Yb; and

(c) a second dopant comprising Ce,

wherein the composition has a first response to a first electromagnetic radiation and, after intermediate exposure to a second electromagnetic radiation, a second response to the first electromagnetic radiation, different from the first response, and

wherein the composition comprises particles and at least about 90 volume percent of the particles are not larger than twice the average particle size.

55. The composition of claim 54 , wherein the first response and the second response comprise electromagnetic radiation emissions.

56. The composition of claim 55 , wherein the first response and the second response comprise luminescent emissions.

57. The composition of claim 54 , wherein the first electromagnetic radiation has a wavelength that is in the infrared spectrum.

58. The composition of claim 54 , wherein the first electromagnetic radiation has a wavelength that is in the visible spectrum.

59. The composition of claim 54 , wherein the first electromagnetic radiation has a wavelength that is in the UV spectrum.

60. The composition of claim 54 , wherein the second electromagnetic radiation has a wavelength that is in the ultraviolet spectrum.

61. The composition of claim 54 , wherein the composition exhibits a regenerated first response to the first electromagnetic radiation after exposure to a third electromagnetic radiation.

62. The composition of claim 61 , wherein the third electromagnetic radiation has a wavelength that is in the infrared spectrum.

63. The composition of claim 61 , wherein the third electromagnetic radiation has a wavelength that is in the ultraviolet spectrum.

64. The composition of claim 54 , wherein the particles are faceted.

65. The composition of claim 54 , wherein the particles are not jagged.

66. The composition of claim 54 , further comprising a sensitizer.
