Abstract

Methods of inducing tooth movement and treating malocclusion, craniofacial anomalies, bony defects, and dentofacial deformities through accelerated bone remodeling as caused by the delivery non-static forces; reducing pain and discomfort in patients; and improving tissue integrity long-term results as to prevent post-orthodontic treatment relapse. The methods and apparatus include a mechanism for data capture and analysis related to patient compliance and usage behavior, as well as for establishing the invention as a component of the clinical office workflow to increase efficiency and productivity.

Claims (32)

1. An orthodontic device, consisting of:

a. an extraoral vibratory source;

b. an extraoral processor that controls said extraoral vibratory source;

c. a power source that drives said vibratory source;

d. an intraoral attachment consisting of a bite plate allowing for contact with an occlusal surface and at least one of lingual and buccal surfaces of a patient's teeth, wherein a patient biting on said bite plate holds said device in place during use;

e. wherein the extraoral vibratory source is coupled to the intraoral attachment;

f. wherein said orthodontic device is hermetically sealed and can vibrate at a frequency of 0.1-400 Hz.

2. The orthodontic device of claim 1 , wherein the processor captures device usage frequency and duration.

3. The orthodontic device of claim 1 , wherein the processor communicates usage frequency and duration to a remote computer.

4. The orthodontic device of claim 1 , wherein the processor captures and transmits device usage frequency and duration.

5. The orthodontic device of claim 1 , said power source being a rechargeable battery to drive the extraoral vibratory source.

6. The orthodontic device of claim 1 , wherein said extraoral vibratory source is a motor or piezoelectric device.

7. The orthodontic device of claim 1 , wherein a bleaching or whitening agent can be applied to teeth via the bite plate.

8. The orthodontic device of claim 1 , wherein said device vibrates at a force of about 5 Newtons.

9. An orthodontic device, consisting of:

a. an extraoral vibratory source;

b. an extraoral processor that controls said extraoral vibratory source and captures and transmits usage frequency and duration;

c. a battery that drives said extraoral vibratory source;

d. an intraoral attachment consisting of a bite plate allowing for contact with an occlusal surface and at least one of lingual and buccal surfaces of a patient's teeth, wherein a patient biting on said bite plate holds said device in place during use, wherein the intraoral attachment is coupled to the extraoral vibrator;

e. wherein said orthodontic device is hermetically sealed;

f. wherein said vibratory source is an actuator that is a motor or piezoelectric device that when activated can vibrate said orthodontic device at a frequency of 0.1-400 Hz.

10. A method for treating occlusion, comprising:

a. providing an orthodontic device according to claim 9 wherein the orthodontic device is held in place during usage by said patient biting on said intraoral attachment;

b. biting said intraoral attachment; and

c. vibrating said orthodontic device for a period of time at a frequency of 0.1-400 Hz.

11. The method of claim 10 , comprising treating craniofacial anomaly, boney defects or dentofacial deformity.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the period of time is about 20 minutes each day.

13. The method of claim 10 , further comprising vibrating said orthodontic device at a force of about 5 Newtons.

14. A method for treating occlusion, comprising:

a. providing an orthodontic device according to claim 1 wherein the orthodontic device is held in place during usage by said patient biting on said intraoral attachment;

b. biting said intraoral attachment; and

c. vibrating said orthodontic device for a period of time at a frequency of 0.1-400 Hz.
