Abstract

Methods and devices for providing dialysis treatment are provided. The device includes a resin bed including zirconium phosphate, zirconium oxide, and urease.

Claims (11)

1. A device for removing uremic toxins in a dialysis procedure comprising:

a body having an inlet and an outlet and defining an interior, the interior including a first layer comprising zirconium oxide, a second layer comprising zirconium oxide, a zirconium phosphate layer between the first and second layers, and a layer comprising a modified urease, wherein the modified urease is a blend of urease and zirconium oxide, the urease present from about 0.1% to about 0.2% by weight of the blend.

2. A device for removing uremic toxins in a dialysis procedure comprising:

a body having an inlet and an outlet and defining an interior, the interior including a first layer comprising zirconium oxide, a second layer comprising zirconium oxide, a zirconium phosphate layer between the first and second layers, and a layer comprising urease, wherein the interior further comprises a carbon layer, wherein the layers are arranged in the sequential order of the urease layer, the first zirconium oxide layer, the zirconium phosphate layer, the second zirconium oxide layer, and the carbon layer, and wherein the first zirconium oxide later has a pH of from 6.8 to 7.5, the zirconium phosphate layer has a pH of from 6.2 to 6.5, and the second zirconium oxide layer has a pH in the range of from 9.5 to 12.5.

3. A device for removing uremic toxins in a dialysis procedure comprising:

a body having an inlet and an outlet and defining an interior, the interior including a first layer comprising zirconium oxide, a second layer comprising zirconium oxide, a zirconium phosphate layer between the first and second layers, and a layer comprising urease, wherein the interior further comprises a carbon layer, wherein the layers are arranged in the sequential order of the urease layer, the first zirconium oxide layer, the zirconium phosphate layer, the second zirconium oxide layer, and the carbon layer, and wherein the first zirconium oxide comprises 100 ml of zirconium oxide in carbonate form at pH 10.52, the zirconium phosphate layer comprises 450 ml of zirconium oxide at pH 6.52, the second zirconium oxide layer comprises 30 ml of zirconium oxide in bicarbonate form at pH 7.33, and the carbon layer comprises 150 ml of carbon.

4. A method for constructing a cartridge for use in a system for providing dialysis, the method comprising:

providing a body having an inlet and an outlet and defining an interior, the interior including a first layer comprising zirconium oxide, a second layer comprising zirconium oxide, a zirconium phosphate layer between the first and second layers, and a layer comprising urease, wherein the interior further comprises a layer comprising carbon, wherein the layers are arranged in the sequential order of the urease layer, the first zirconium oxide layer, the zirconium phosphate layer, the second zirconium oxide layer, and the carbon layer, and wherein the first zirconium oxide later has a pH of 15 from 6.8 to 7.5, the zirconium phosphate layer has a pH of from 6.2 to 6.5, and the second zirconium oxide layer has a pH in the range of from 9.5 to 12.5.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein the first zirconium oxide comprises about 30 grams of zirconium oxide, the zirconium phosphate layer comprises about 680 grams of zirconium oxide, and the second zirconium oxide layer comprises from 100 to 150 grams of zirconium oxide.

6. A method for constructing a cartridge for use in a system for providing dialysis, the method comprising:

providing a body having an inlet and an outlet and defining an interior, the interior including a first layer comprising zirconium oxide, a second layer comprising zirconium oxide, a zirconium phosphate layer between the first and second layers, and a layer comprising urease, wherein the interior further comprises a layer comprising carbon, wherein the layers are arranged in the sequential order of the urease layer, the first zirconium oxide layer, the zirconium phosphate layer, the second zirconium oxide layer, and the carbon layer, and wherein the first zirconium oxide comprises 100 ml of zirconium oxide in carbonate form at pH 10.52, the zirconium phosphate layer comprises 450 ml of zirconium oxide at pH 6.52, the second zirconium oxide layer comprises 30 ml of zirconium oxide in bicarbonate form at pH 7.33, and the carbon layer comprises 150 ml of carbon.
