Abstract

An electrical disconnect has a pair of selectably engageable enclosures each including a housing and one or more terminals supported therein. The terminals each have a spring finger at an outer end opposite wire ports in the cap to receive a stripped end of a wire in a push-in engagement. The terminals are releasably engageable in overlapping relation in an engagement zone. The housings have wire receiving receptacles therein which reside in the engagement zone when the enclosures are joined.

Claims (5)

1. In an electrical disconnect of the type having first and second housings, the housings defining a longitudinal axis along which the housings are movable to engage and disengage one another, at least one electrical terminal disposed in each of the first and second housings, the terminal of one of the first and second housings being selectively engageable in overlapping relation with a counterpart terminal in the other of the first and second housings, wherein the terminals overlap when engaged over a distance defining an engagement zone, each of the terminals having a resilient spring finger for engagement with a conductor of a wire inserted into a wire receptacle box formed in the housing in which the each of the terminals is disposed, the improvement comprising a compact housing structure wherein the wire receptacle box is adapted to receive a conductor of an inserted wire and to locate at least a portion of the conductor in the engagement zone when the housings are engaged; and

wherein each of the terminals has a resilient spring finger for engagement with a conductor of a wire inserted into a respective wire receptacle box formed in the respective housing in which each terminal is disposed, and wherein each wire receptacle box is adapted to receive a conductor of an inserted wire and to have the end of the receptacle box located in the engagement zone when the housings are engaged.

2. The electrical disconnect of claim 1 wherein each of the housings includes a wire receptacle box and the wire receptacle boxes abut one another when the housings are engaged.

3. The electrical disconnect of claim 2 wherein the wire receptacle boxes are axially aligned with one another when the housings are engaged.

4. The electrical disconnect of claim 1 wherein the housings each further comprise an extension with each extension surrounding one of the terminals, the extension of one housing being sized to fit into the extension of the other housing when the housings are engaged.
