Abstract

A receive or listen only Physical Interface Device (Phy). The receive or listen only Phy is configured to have a front end configured to only receive data from a communications network. The receive only Phy may be implemented a part of a tap device including a first network port for receiving a first network signal having a first format; a receive only Phy for converting the first network signal into a second signal format; and a transmit and receive Phy for receiving the first network signal in the second signal format and converting it into the first signal format.

Claims (33)

1. A device for tapping network signals from a conductive network segment in a computer network, comprising:

a first network port adapted to couple to the network segment for receiving a first network signal having a first format, the first network signal transmitted on the network segment in a first direction;

a first receive only Physical Interface Device (Phy) coupled to the first network port for converting the first network signal into a second signal format, wherein the first receive only Phy is configured to ignore auto negotiation between first and second devices communicating over the conductive network and to lock onto data signals between the first and second devices without any external help from the first and second devices of the conductive network; and

a first transmit and receive Phy coupled to the first receive only Phy for receiving the first network signal in the second signal format and converting it into the first signal format for transmission to a monitoring device.

2. The device for tapping network signals in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the first listen only Phy is configured to operate as slave only Phy that uses a received clock signal.

3. The device for tapping network signals in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the first listen only Phy is configured to have no echo cancelling.

4. The device for tapping network signals in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the computer network is a Gigabit Ethernet system.

5. The device for tapping network signals in accordance with claim 1 , further comprising:

a second network port adapted to couple to the network segment for receiving a second network signal having the first signal format, the second network signal transmitted on the network segment in a second direction, opposite the first direction;

a second receive only Phy coupled to the second network port for converting the second network signal into the second signal format; and

a second transmit and receive Phy coupled to the second receive only Phy for receiving the first network signal in the second signal format and converting it into the first signal format for transmission to a monitoring device.

6. The device for tapping network signals in accordance with claim 5 , wherein the first and second receive only Phys are on separate Integrated Circuit (IC) chips.

7. The device for tapping network signals in accordance with claim 5 , wherein the first and second receive only Phys and the first and second transmit and receive Phys are integrated on a single IC chip.

8. The device for tapping network signals in accordance with claim 5 , wherein the first receive only Phy and the first transmit and receive Phy are integrated as a single IC chip and the second receive only Phy and the second transmit and receive Phy are integrated as a single IC chip.

9. A device for tapping network signals from a conductive network segment in a computer network, comprising:

a first network port adapted to couple to the network segment for receiving a first network signal having a first format, the first network signal transmitted on the network segment in a first direction;

a first receive only Physical Interface Device (Phy) coupled to the first network port for converting the first network signal into a second signal format; and

a first transmit and receive Phy coupled to the first receive only Phy for receiving the first network signal in the second signal format and converting it into the first signal format for transmission to a monitoring device, wherein communication between first and second devices communicating over the conductive network is not lost due to a loss of power or other fault to the first receive only Phy.

10. A Physical Interface Device (Phy) comprising:

a front end portion configured as unidirectional, receive only when monitoring communication signals between a first and second device communicating over a communications network, wherein the front end has no transmit functionality, wherein the Phy front end is configured to ignore auto negotiation between the first and second devices and to lock onto the communications signals between the first and second devices without any external help from the first and second devices.

11. The Phy in accordance with claim 10 , further comprising a back end portion configured to receive and transmit when monitoring communication signals between the first and second device communicating over a communications network.

12. The Phy in accordance with claim 10 , wherein the Phy is configured to operate as slave only Phy that uses a received clock signal.

13. The Phy in accordance with claim 10 , wherein the Phy is configured to have no echo cancelling.

14. The Phy in accordance with claim 10 , wherein communication between the first and second devices is not lost due to a loss of power or other fault to the Phy.

15. The Phy in accordance with claim 10 , wherein the Phy is configured as a single IC chip or is integrated on an IC chip with one or more other Phy devices.

16. A method for configuring and using a receive only Physical Interface Device (Phy) in a conductive network of a computing system, the method comprising:

an act of obtaining a Phy with a front end that does not have transmit functionality, wherein the act of obtaining a Phy with a front end that does not have transmit functionality comprises:

an act of disabling the transmit functionality by writing microcode to one or more registers of the Phy, wherein the microcode is configured such that when executed by the Phy any auto negotiation is disabled, one or more output drivers are disabled, or the Phy is configured to be a slave only device; or

an act of removing the transmit functionality at Phy manufacture time

an act of monitoring incoming data frames or packets with the Phy;

an act of the Phy recognizing one or more known signal elements; and

an act of the Phy using the one or more known signal elements to at least partially lock onto the data frames or packets.

17. The method in accordance with claim 16 , wherein the one or more known signal elements include an Ethernet Idle or a clock rate.
