Abstract

A process for treating BOD, nitrogen and phosphorus containing wastewater, wherein the process includes the steps of providing wastewater influent into an anoxic zone having activated sludge and mixing the wastewater influent with the activated sludge in the anoxic zone to form a mixed liquor. The process further includes providing the mixed liquor into one more further treatment zones and transferring a portion of the mixed liquor from the further treatment zone to a membrane filter wherein a filtrate is separated from sludge. The process also includes selectively recycling at least a portion of the sludge to the anoxic zone as recycled activated sludge.

2. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the portion of recycled activated sludge includes dissolved oxygen.

3. The process according to claim 2 , wherein the dissolved oxygen content of the recycled activated sludge is less than 8 mg/L.

4. The process according to claim 2 , wherein the dissolved oxygen content of the recycled activated sludge is in a range of from about 4 mg/L to about 8 mg/L.

5. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the anoxic zone promotes simultaneous nitrification and denitrification.

6. The process according to claim 1 , further comprising recycling a portion of mixed liquor from the second of the plurality of further treatment zones to the anoxic zone for mixing therein with the wastewater and the recycled activated sludge.

7. The process according to claim 1 , wherein one of said plurality of further treatment zones is a further anoxic zone.

8. The process according to claim 7 , further comprising providing a source of carbon to the further anoxic zone.

9. The process according to claim 8 , further comprising measuring nitrate levels in the filtrate and controlling the source of carbon provided to the further anoxic zone in dependence on the measured nitrate levels.

10. The process of claim 7 , wherein the second of the plurality of further treatment zones is an anoxic zone.

11. The process of claim 7 , wherein the second of the plurality of further treatment zones is an aerobic zone.

12. The process of claim 1 , wherein mixing the wastewater influent with the activated sludge in the anoxic zone comprises mixing the wastewater influent and the activated sludge in the anoxic zone with a mixing device.

13. The process of claim 12 , wherein solids are maintained in suspension in the anoxic zone without aeration, the anoxic zone promotes simultaneous nitrification and denitrification, and oxygen utilized for nitrification is provided by the recycled activated sludge.

14. A process for treating BOD, nitrogen and phosphorus containing wastewater, the process comprising the steps of:

providing wastewater influent into a first anoxic zone having activated sludge;

mixing the wastewater influent with the activated sludge in the first anoxic zone to form a first mixed liquor;

transferring at least a portion of the first mixed liquor into an aerobic zone;

mixing the at least a portion of the first mixed liquor with activated sludge in the aerobic zone to form a second mixed liquor;

transferring at least a portion of the second mixed liquor into a second anoxic zone;

mixing the at least a portion of the second mixed liquor with activated sludge in the second anoxic zone to form a third mixed liquor;

transferring at least a portion of the third mixed liquor into a third anoxic zone;

mixing the at least a portion of the third mixed liquor with activated sludge in the third anoxic zone to form a fourth mixed liquor;

transferring a portion of the fourth mixed liquor from the third anoxic zone to a membrane bioreactor;

filtering the portion of the fourth mixed liquor to form a filtrate and an activated sludge; and

selectively recycling at least a portion of the activated sludge to at least one of the first anoxic zone, the aerobic zone, and the second anoxic zone.

15. The process of claim 14 , wherein at least one of the first anoxic zone, the second anoxic zone, and the third anoxic zone promotes simultaneous nitrification and denitrification.

16. The process of claim 14 , further comprising recycling a portion of mixed liquor from the second anoxic zone to the first anoxic zone for mixing therein with the wastewater and the recycled activated sludge.

17. The process of claim 14 , wherein the dissolved oxygen content of the recycled activated sludge is in a range of from about 4 mg/L to about 8 mg/L.

18. The process of claim 14 , wherein an oxygen deficit is maintained in the first anoxic zone.

19. The process of claim 18 , wherein solids are maintained in suspension in the first anoxic zone without aeration.

20. The process of claim 19 , further comprising operating at least one of the second and the third anoxic zone as an aerated anoxic reactor.

21. A process for treating BOD, nitrogen and phosphorus containing wastewater, the process comprising:

providing wastewater into an aerobic zone having activated sludge;

mixing the wastewater with the activated sludge in the aerobic zone to form a first mixed liquor having a dissolved oxygen concentration of at least 1 mg/L;
