Abstract

An icon or file is provided to facilitate communications across a network. The icon or file represents a contact or set of contacts and is separate from the communications program's user interface. At least one action is executed in response to an operation performed on the icon or a command issued to the file. The actions may generally include, for example, retrieving profile information about the contact, setting an alert to indicate that the contact's network/login status has changed (e.g., login, logout, or idle), or performing communications with the contact. The action may be the same action that would be executed in response to an operation performed on a representation of the contact or set of contacts in a user interface of a communications program.

Claims (43)

1. A method of creating an icon, the method comprising:

selecting a representation of a contact or set of contacts of a user in an interface of an instant messaging program;

performing an operation on the selected representation;

creating an icon in response to the performed operation on the selected representation, wherein the icon represents the contact or set of contacts of the user and is located outside of the interface of the instant messaging program; and

configuring the icon to allow the user to initiate and perform actions available from the interface of the instant messaging program that are associated with the contact or set of contacts without using the interface of the instant messaging program and regardless of whether the instant messaging program is running when an operation is performed on the icon.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein performing the operation on the selected representation further comprises dragging and dropping the selected representation outside of the interface of the instant messaging program.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising associating information to be transmitted to the contact or set of contacts of the user with the icon representing the contact or set of contacts of the user.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein associating the information comprises dropping an icon representing the information to be transmitted to the contact or set of contacts of the user on the icon representing the contact or set of contacts of the user.

5. The method of claim 4 further comprising:

detecting that the icon representing information to be transmitted to the contact or set of contacts of the user has been dropped on the icon representing the contact or set of contacts of the user, and

automatically transmitting the information represented by the dropped icon to the contact or set of contacts of the user in response to the icon representing information to be transmitted being dropped on the icon representing the contact or set of contacts of the user.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein the information to be transmitted comprises a file, such that the file is automatically transmitted to the contacts or set of contacts of the user in response to the icon representing the file being dropped on the icon representing the contact or set of contacts of the user.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein automatically transmitting the file further comprises:

automatically establishing a communication session with the contact or set of contacts of the user in response to the icon representing the file being dropped on the icon representing the contact or set of contacts of the user; and

transmitting the file to the contact or set of contacts of the user via the communication session.

8. The method of claim 5 wherein the information to be transmitted comprises a textual message such that the textual message is automatically transmitted to the contact or set of contacts of the user in response to the icon representing the textual message being dropped on the icon representing the contact or set of contacts of the user.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein transmitting comprises transmitting the textual message to the contact or set of contacts of the user via a host server.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the contact or set of contacts is a single contact.

11. A computer-usable storage medium storing a computer program for creating an icon, the computer program comprising instructions for causing a computer processor to:

receive a selection of a representation of a contact or set of contacts of a user in an interface of instant messaging program;

receive an indication that an operation was performed on the selected representation;

create an icon in response to the performed operation on the selected representation, wherein the icon represents the contact or set of contacts of the user and is located outside of the interface of the instant messaging program; and

configure the icon to allow the user to initiate and perform actions available from the interface of the instant messaging program that are associated with the contact or set of contacts without using the interface of the instant messaging program and regardless of whether the instant messaging program is running when an operation is performed on the icon.

12. The computer-usable storage medium of claim 11 wherein the operation that was performed on the selected representation comprises dragging and dropping the selected representation outside of the interface of the instant messaging program.

13. The computer-usable storage medium of claim 12 wherein the instructions further comprise instructions for causing the computer processor to:

detect that an icon representing information to be transmitted to the contact or set of contacts of the user has been dropped on the icon representing the contact or set of contacts of the user, and

automatically transmit the information represented by the dropped icon to the contact or set of contacts of the user in response to the icon representing information to be transmitted being dropped on the icon representing the contact or set of contacts of the user.

14. The computer-usable storage medium of claim 13 wherein the information to be transmitted comprises a file, such that the file is automatically transmitted to the contacts or set of contacts of the user in response to the icon representing the file being dropped on the icon representing the contact or set of contacts of the user.

15. The computer-usable storage medium of claim 14 wherein, to automatically transmitting the file, the instructions further comprise instructions for causing the computer processor to:

automatically establish a communication session with the contact or set of contacts of the user in response to the icon representing the file being dropped on the icon representing the contact or set of contacts of the user; and

transmit the file to the contact or set of contacts of the user via the communication session.

16. The computer-usable storage medium of claim 13 wherein the information to be transmitted comprises a textual message such that the textual message is automatically transmitted to the contact or set of contacts of the user in response to the icon representing the textual message being dropped on the icon representing the contact or set of contacts of the user.

17. The computer-usable storage medium of claim 16 wherein, to transmit the textual message, the instructions further comprise instructions for causing the computer processor to transmit the textual message to the contact or set of contacts of the user via a host server.

18. The computer-usable storage medium of claim 11 wherein the contact or set of contacts is a single contact.

19. A device comprising:

at least one processor;

at least one data storage system;

wherein the data storage system has a program stored therein, the program having instructions that cause the processor to perform the following:

receive a selection of a representation of a contact or set of contacts of a user in an interface of instant messaging program;

receive an indication that an operation was performed on the selected representation;

create an icon in response to the performed operation on the selected representation, wherein the icon represents the contact or set of contacts of the user and is located outside of the interface of the instant messaging program; and

configure the icon to allow the user to initiate and perform actions available from the interface of the instant messaging program that are associated with the contact or set of contacts without using the interface of the instant messaging program and regardless of whether the instant messaging program is running when an operation is performed on the icon.

20. The device of claim 19 wherein the operation that was performed on the selected representation comprises dragging and dropping the selected representation outside of the interface of the instant messaging program.
