Abstract

In some embodiments, a spinal stabilization system may be formed in a patient using quick-connect sleeve assemblies. Each quick-connect sleeve assembly can be coupled to a bone fastener assembly in a fast and intuitive way. In one embodiment, a quick-connect sleeve assembly has a detachable member and a movable member. Both members engage a collar of the bone fastener assembly. In one embodiment, the engagement can be locked via one or more locking features to facilitate screwing a bone fastener of the bone fastener assembly onto a vertebral body in a minimally invasive surgical procedure. Each quick-connect sleeve assembly has a low profile and is particularly shaped for minimally invasive entry.

Claims (33)

1. A quick-connect sleeve assembly, comprising:

a detachable member having a cylindrical body, at least one channel extending along an inner surface of said cylindrical body, one or more windows in said cylindrical body, and at least one passage extending from a first end of said detachable member to a second end of said detachable member, said second end being configured for coupling to a collar of a bone fastener assembly; and

a movable member having a head portion, a body portion, and at least one locking feature for latching onto said detachable member with a push motion, a twist motion, or a combination thereof;

wherein said body portion and at least one locking feature of said movable member are configured to be loaded into said detachable member through said first end of said detachable member when said detachable member is coupled to the collar, with the body portion extending through the at least one channel of said detachable member;

wherein at least one of said at least one locking feature is configured to engage at least one of said one or more windows, thereby hindering rotational movement of the movable member relative to the detachable member; and

wherein said body portion of said movable member is configured to engage said collar of said bone fastener assembly through said detachable member to prevent rotational motion of said collar relative to said detachable member.

2. The quick-connect sleeve assembly of claim 1 , wherein said one or more windows are configured for revealing selective areas of said body portion of said movable member inside a wall of said cylindrical body of said detachable member.

3. The quick-connect sleeve assembly of claim 2 , wherein said selective areas include said at least one locking feature.

4. The quick-connect sleeve assembly of claim 1 , wherein said one or more windows minimize weight of said detachable member.

5. The quick-connect sleeve assembly of claim 1 , wherein said detachable member has at least one mating feature corresponding to said at least one locking feature of said movable member.

6. The quick-connect sleeve assembly of claim 1 , wherein said detachable member has two channels extending along the inner surface of said cylindrical body, and said body portion of said movable member has two prongs, wherein the two channels are configured to receive the prongs.

7. The quick-connect sleeve assembly of claim 6 , wherein said two channels of said detachable member is configured to receive and allow said two prongs of said movable member to engage said collar of said bone fastener assembly.

8. The quick-connect sleeve assembly of claim 6 , wherein said at least one locking feature is an integral part of at least one of said two prongs of said movable member.

9. The quick-connect sleeve assembly of claim 1 , wherein said at least one locking feature is an integral part of said body portion of said movable member.

10. The quick-connect sleeve assembly of claim 1 , wherein said first end of said detachable member is configured to accommodate said at least one locking feature of said movable member.

11. The quick-connect sleeve assembly of claim 1 , wherein said push motion results in the at least one locking feature moving one or more clicks, which are achieved by spring tension.

12. The quick-connect sleeve assembly of claim 1 , wherein said second end of said detachable member is configured for detachably coupling to said collar of said bone fastener assembly by moving said movable member one click.

13. The quick-connect sleeve assembly of claim 1 , wherein said at least one locking feature of said movable member is configured to allow said movable member to securely latch onto said detachable member at one click.

14. The quick-connect sleeve assembly of claim 1 , wherein said at least one locking feature is a bump on said body portion of said movable member, wherein when said movable member is inserted through said at least one channel of said detachable member, said bump extends into one of the one or more windows.

15. The quick-connect sleeve assembly of claim 1 , wherein said detachable member has a plurality of windows arranged along the cylindrical body, wherein said at least one locking feature is configured to engage successive windows as the movable member is advanced into said detachable member.

16. The quick-connect sleeve assembly of claim 1 , wherein said detachable member has one or more windows on each of two sides, and the at least one locking feature of said movable member has a locking feature on each of two sides, wherein when the movable member is inserted into the detachable member, each locking feature engages a window on each side of the detachable member.

17. A spinal implantation system, comprising:

at least one spinal stabilization rod;

two or more bone fastener assemblies for fixing said at least one spinal stabilization rod onto two or more vertebral bodies, each bone fastener assembly including a collar; and

two or more quick-connect sleeve assemblies for anchoring said two or more bone fastener assemblies onto said two or more vertebral bodies in a minimally invasive procedure, each quick-connect sleeve assembly comprising:

a detachable member having a cylindrical body, at least one channel extending longitudinally along an inner surface of said cylindrical body, and at least one passage extending from a first end of said detachable member to a second end of said detachable member, said second end being configured for coupling to the collar of one of the two or more bone fastener assemblies; and

a movable member having a head portion, a body portion, and at least one locking feature for latching onto said detachable member with a push motion, a twist motion, or a combination thereof;

wherein said body portion and at least one locking feature of said movable member are configured to be loaded into said detachable member through the first end of said detachable member when said detachable member is coupled to the collar, with the body portion extending through at least one channel of said detachable member;

wherein said detachable member has at least one mating feature at said first end configured to engage said at least one locking feature on said movable member, thereby hindering rotational movement of the movable member relative to the detachable member; and

wherein said body portion of said movable member is configured to engage said collar of said bone fastener assembly through said detachable member to prevent rotational motion of said collar relative to said detachable member.

18. The spinal implantation system of claim 17 , wherein said second end of said detachable member is configured for coupling to said collar of said bone fastener assembly by advancing said movable member one click.

19. The spinal implantation system of claim 17 , wherein said at least one locking feature of said movable member is configured to allow said movable member to securely latch onto said detachable member at one click.

20. The spinal implantation system of claim 17 , wherein each quick-connect sleeve assembly has a low profile for minimally invasive entry through an incision.
