Abstract

A balloon catheter for treating a constricted sinus passageway of a patient includes an elongate flexible shaft defining a lumen therein, the elongate flexible shaft having a proximal end and distal region. The elongate flexible shaft may include a kink-resistant coil in the distal region. A hub is affixed to the proximal end of the elongate flexible shaft, the hub including a port in communication with the lumen. An expandable member is disposed on the distal region of the elongate flexible shaft, wherein an interior portion of the expandable member is in communication with the lumen.

Claims (20)

1. A method of treating a sinus passageway of a patient with a balloon catheter comprising:

directing a trocar through a bone in a canine fossa region of the patient to form an artificial passageway into a maxillary sinus cavity, the trocar having a diameter in the range of between 0.7 and 4.2 millimeters;

directing a distal portion of the balloon catheter through the artificial passageway and into the sinus passageway, wherein the distal portion of the balloon catheter includes an inflation member and the inflation member includes a plurality of perforations;

inflating the inflation member to dilate the sinus passageway; and

directing an agent through the perforations of the inflation member.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the agent is directed through the perforations before the inflation member is inflated.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the agent is directed through the perforations while the inflation member is inflated.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the agent is directed through the perforations after the inflation member is inflated.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the distal portion of the balloon catheter is directed to position the inflation member in an ostium of a sinus and inflating the inflation member dilates the sinus ostium.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the inflation member is advanced at least partially around the uncinate process.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the agent is at least one of a therapeutic agent and a diagnostic agent.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the agent comprises an adhesion prevention substance.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the balloon includes a flexible elongate member having a proximal end and a distal end and the flexible elongate member defines a first lumen and a second lumen; a hub secured to the proximal end of the flexible elongate member, the hub including a first port in communication with the first lumen of the flexible elongate member and a second port in communication with the second lumen of the flexible elongate member; the inflation member disposed on or adjacent to the distal end of the flexible elongate member, an interior of the inflation member being in communication with the first lumen of the flexible elongate member; an outer membrane surrounding the inflation member, an interior of the outer membrane being in communication with the second lumen of the flexible elongate member, the outer membrane including the plurality of perforations.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the trocar has a diameter in the range of between 1 and 2.5 millimeters.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the trocar has a diameter in the range of between 1.2 and 2.0 millimeters.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the stopping surface is removable from the trocar.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the trocar is configured so that a distance between the stopping surface and a distal tip of the trocar is adjustable.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the trocar includes a needle and a cannula.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the trocar is a hollow sharpened needle.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the trocar includes a stopping surface.
