Abstract

Device, system and method of landmark-based routing and guidance; for example, an apparatus including a route guidance information generator adapted to generate route guidance information including one or more road-based references and one or more landmark-based references.

Claims (70)

1. An apparatus for use in landmark-based routing, comprising:

a landmark database which includes information describing a plurality of landmarks, wherein each landmark is a conspicuous object, item, or structure that can be used to distinguish or facilitate recognizing a locality or point-of-interest, and wherein the landmark database specifies, for each landmark:

a geographical, spatial, or geo-spatial location of the landmark,

a rating value associated with the landmark that indicates the landmark's relative usefulness for route guidance, wherein the rating value, at least in part, is based on at least one of a plurality of user input and a quality rating of each landmark's location,

a description associated with the landmark;

an updater module that enables one or more of a manual, automatic, and user feedback-based updating or modification or rating of landmarks in the landmark database; and

a route guidance generator which is adapted to generate route guidance information associated with moving from an origin to a destination, wherein, for a user, the route guidance generator:

selects, at least in part based on ratings, landmarks useful for guidance from within the landmark database,

and

combines the landmark-based guidance with road-based guidance information to create a route guidance information to follow in moving from the origin to the destination.

2. A method for use in landmark-based routing, comprising the steps of:

providing a landmark database which includes information describing a plurality of landmarks, wherein each landmark is a conspicuous object, item, or structure that can be used to distinguish or facilitate recognizing a locality or point-of-interest, and wherein the landmark database specifies, for each landmark:

a geographical, spatial, or geo-spatial location of the landmark,

a rating value associated with the landmark that indicates the landmark's relative usefulness for route guidance, wherein the rating value, at least in part, is based on at least one of a plurality of user input and a quality rating of each landmark's location, and

a description associated with the landmark;

providing an updater module that enables at least one of a manual, automatic, and user feedback-based updating or modification or rating of landmarks in the landmark database; and

generating route guidance information for a user moving from an origin to a destination, by:

selecting, based at least in part on each landmark's rating, landmarks to be used as landmark-based guidance, and

combining the landmark-based guidance, with road-based guidance information, to create a route guidance information to follow in moving from the origin to the destination.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the determined route guidance information is not necessarily a shortest route in length, including

wherein the route guidance generator selectively determines to use a first route segment or a first set of route segments, instead of a second route segment or a second set of route segments, if

the first route segment or set are associated with landmarks useful for route guidance and the second route segment or set are not associated with landmarks useful for route guidance, or

the landmarks associated with the first route segment or set have a higher quality or higher utility for route guidance purposes than the landmarks associated with the second route segment or set.

The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the route guidance generator selects landmarks to be used as landmark-based guidance at least partially based on the physical visibility of the landmarks to the user, including selecting landmarks having a higher relatively visibility from a particular angle or route segment, than alternate landmarks.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a map generator adapted to generate a map or portion thereof corresponding to a geographical area or a route between the origin and the destination with possible in-between waypoints.

The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the route guidance information includes, for use while the user is moving from the origin to the destination, reassurance information corresponding to landmarks along the route segment which may be used by the user for routing recognition, validation, orientation, or reassurance.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the reassurance information is provided to the user immediately after the user performs a maneuver, or after a time period has passed or a distance was traveled from the maneuver.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the landmark database includes both

a set of official landmarks that cannot be modified by the user, and

a set of unofficial landmarks that can be added to and edited in response to user feedback.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising

a contacts database that includes a list of personal contacts associated with a user or with multiple users and a geographical, spatial, or geo-spatial location associated with each personal contact, and

wherein the personal contacts and their locations are used as landmarks in determining the route guidance information.

The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein users can directly or indirectly update, correct, add, augment, delete and/or modify information stored in the landmark database, so that the information stored in the landmark database can be maintained or improve in accuracy and/or quality, including wherein users' feedback and input enables removal of landmarks that are obsolete and/or are not useful for navigation or route guidance, addition of landmarks that are new and/or useful for navigation or route guidance, validation of existing landmarks, or decreases the degradation rate or the decay rate of the information stored in the landmark database.

The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the system allows receiving as input from one or more users an indication of a request to modify the landmark database, including that the modification is performed if the modification is requested by a pre-defined number of users, the modification is requested by a trusted source or user, or the requested modification is validated or verified.

12. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the users' feedback and input is repeated to allow updating of the landmark database from time to time, substantially continuously, at pre-defined time intervals, or when one or more conditions are met.

13. The method of claim 2 , wherein the determined route guidance information is not necessarily a shortest route in length, including

wherein the route guidance generator selectively determines to use a first route segment or a first set of route segments, instead of a second route segment or a second set of route segments, if

the first route segment or set are associated with landmarks useful for route guidance and the second route segment or set are not associated with landmarks useful for route guidance, or

the landmarks associated with the first route segment or set have a higher quality or higher utility for route guidance purposes than the landmarks associated with the second route segment or set.

The method of claim 2 , wherein the route guidance generator selects landmarks to be used as landmark-based guidance at least partially based on the physical visibility of the landmark to the user, including selecting landmarks having a higher relatively visibility from a particular angle or route segment, than alternate landmarks.

15. The method of claim 2 , further comprising a map generator adapted to generate a map or portion thereof corresponding to geographical area or a route between the origin and the destination with possible in-between waypoints.

The method of claim 2 , wherein the route guidance information includes, for use while the user is moving from the origin to the destination, reassurance information corresponding to landmarks along the route segment which may be used by the user for routing recognition, validation, orientation, or reassurance.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the reassurance information is provided to the user immediately after the user performs a maneuver, or after a time period has passed or a distance was traveled from the maneuver.

18. The method of claim 2 , wherein the landmark database includes both

a set of official landmarks that cannot be modified by the user, and

a set of unofficial landmarks that can be added to and edited within the landmark database in response to user feedback and input.

19. The method of claim 2 , further comprising

a contacts database that includes a list of personal contacts associated with a user or with multiple users and a geographical, spatial, or geo-spatial location associated with each personal contact, and

wherein the personal contacts and their locations are used as landmarks in determining the route guidance information.

The method of claim 2 , wherein users can directly or indirectly update, correct, add, augment, delete and/or modify information stored in the landmark database, so that the information stored in the landmark database can be maintained or improve in accuracy and/or quality, including wherein users' feedback and input enables removal of landmarks that are obsolete and/or are not useful for navigation or route guidance, addition of landmarks that are new and/or useful for navigation or route guidance, validation of existing landmarks, or decreases the degradation rate or the decay rate of the information stored in the landmark database.

The method of claim 20 , wherein the system allows receiving as input from one or more users an indication of a request to modify the landmark database, including that the modification is performed if the modification is requested by a pre-defined number of users, the modification is requested by a trusted source or user, or the requested modification is validated or verified.

22. The method of claim 20 , wherein the users' feedback and input is repeated to allow updating of the landmark database from time to time, substantially continuously, at pre-defined time intervals, or when one or more conditions are met.

23. A machine-readable medium or article which stores an instruction or a set of instructions that, when executed by a machine, cause the machine to perform a method comprising:

providing a landmark database which includes information describing a plurality of landmarks, wherein each landmark is a conspicuous object, item, or structure that can be used to distinguish or facilitate recognizing a locality or point-of-interest, and wherein the landmark database specifies, for each landmark:

a geographical, spatial, or geo-spatial location of the landmark,

a rating value associated with the landmark that indicates the landmark's relative usefulness for route guidance, wherein the rating value, at least in part, is based on at least one of a plurality of user input and a quality rating of each landmark's location, and

a description associated with the landmark;

providing an updater module that enables one or more of a manual, automatic, and user feedback-based updating or modification or rating of landmarks in the landmark database; and

generating route guidance information for a user moving from an origin to a destination, by

selecting, based at least on each landmark's rating useful landmarks to be used as landmark-based guidance, and

combining the landmark-based guidance with road-based guidance information to create a route guidance information to follow in moving from the origin to the destination.

24. An apparatus for use in landmark-based routing, comprising:

a landmark database which includes information describing a plurality of landmarks, wherein each landmark is a conspicuous object, item, or structure that can be used to distinguish or facilitate recognizing a locality or point-of-interest, and wherein the landmark database specifies, for each landmark

a geographical, spatial, or geo-spatial location of the landmark,

a rating value associated with the landmark that indicates the landmark's relative usefulness for route guidance, wherein the rating value, at least in part, is based on at least one of a plurality of user input and a quality rating of each landmark's location, and

a description associated with the landmark; and

a route guidance generator which is adapted to generate route guidance information associated with moving from an origin to a destination, wherein, for a particular user, the route guidance generator:

selects, based at least in part on each landmark's rating, landmarks to be used as landmark-based guidance, and

combines the landmark-based guidance with road-based guidance information to create a route guidance information to follow in moving from the origin to the destination, including selectively determining to use a first route segment or a first set of route segments, instead of a second route segment or a second set of route segments.
