Abstract

A spine distraction implant alleviates pain associated with spinal stenosis and facet arthropathy by expanding the volume in the spine canal and/or neural foramen. The implant provides a spinal extension stop while allowing freedom of spinal flexion.

Claims (19)

1. An interspinous implant comprising:

a body having first and second lateral sides;

the body further having vertically separated upper and lower saddles disposed laterally between the first and second lateral sides, the upper and lower saddles configured to receive upper and lower spinous processes respectively;

a bore located vertically between the upper and lower saddles, the bore extending through the body and disposed so as to extend anteriorly-posteriorly generally along a sagittal plane defined by the upper and lower spinous processes when the upper and lower spinous processes are received in the upper and lower saddles respectively;

the first and second lateral sides each having a respective recessed area, the recessed areas disposed so that at least a part of each thereof is located vertically between the saddles;

the bore located laterally between the recessed areas and having a fully circumferentially enclosing boundary wall with opposing upper and lower portions separated by a first distance;

a second distance between the boundary wall upper portion and the upper saddle being substantially smaller than the first distance;

a first arm extending upwardly from the first lateral side and a second arm extending upwardly from the second lateral side, the first and second arms each having a tip;

a third arm extending downwardly from the first lateral side and a fourth arm extending downwardly from the second lateral side, the third and fourth arms each having a tip;

a first theoretical axis extending through the tips of the first and third arms;

a second theoretical axis extending perpendicular to the first theoretical axis and extending through the first arm and the tip of the second arm; wherein the first and second theoretical axes intersect at an intersection point on the first arm;

a third distance between the tips of the first and third arms along the first theoretical axis;

a fourth distance between the tip of the second arm and the intersection point along the second theoretical axis; wherein the third distance is greater than the fourth distance;

wherein the first lateral side extends continuously from an outer surface of the upper saddle to an outer surface of the lower saddle through the respective recessed area.

2. The implant of claim 1 wherein each of the recessed areas comprises an outwardly facing concavely curvate portion.

3. The implant of claim 1 wherein the body is integrally formed and the bore is unobstructed.

4. The implant of claim 1 wherein a width of the bore is approximately equal to a width of the upper saddle.

5. The implant of claim 1 wherein the first arm is upwardly tapering.

6. The implant of claim 1 wherein the body includes a front surface extending between the first and second lateral sides and wherein the recessed areas in the first and second lateral sides intersect the front surface.
