Abstract

A retractor having a pair of blades is disclosed. A ring having an opening is attached to one end of the blades. The blades define a channel therebetween. The blades may be pivotally coupled to the ring. The retractor may have at least two conditions. In a first condition, the retractor is insertable through an incision in a patient's skin to an operative site. In a second condition, the retractor may be manipulated for retracting tissue surrounding the operative site. Instruments, prostheses, or tissue may be inserted or removed through the channel of the retractor.

Claims (40)

1. A surgical construct comprising:

a pedicle screw having a receiver, the receiver configured for receiving a spinal rod; and

a surgical retractor having:

a first elongate member;

a first arcuate member attached to one end of the first elongate member, the first arcuate member having an arc of at least 180°; and

a first rod attached to an outer surface of the first arcuate member, the first rod having a different cross-sectional profile than the first elongate member and defining a first longitudinal axis, wherein said first elongate member is bendable about a second axis, the second axis being laterally spaced from the first longitudinal axis, the first rod positioned in the receiver of the pedicle screw.

2. The surgical construct of claim 1 , further including:

a second elongate member and a second arcuate member attached to a distal end of the second elongate member, the second arcuate member having an arc of at least 180°, the second elongate member bendable with respect to a third axis, the third axis being laterally spaced from the first longitudinal axis, wherein the first and second arcuate members are attached to one another.

3. The surgical construct of claim 2 , further including a second rod attached to the second arcuate member, the first and second rods extending outwards from a center of the surgical retractor.

4. The surgical construct of claim 3 , wherein the arcuate members define an opening of the surgical retractor, the opening configured and dimensioned to accommodate a surgical instrument therethrough.

5. The surgical construct of claim 2 , wherein the second axis and the third axis are substantially coplanar.

6. The surgical construct of claim 1 , wherein the first longitudinal axis and the second axis are substantially coplanar.

7. The surgical construct of claim 1 , wherein the first arcuate member is formed of a material having a different rigidity than the first elongate member.

8. A surgical construct comprising:

a pedicle screw having a receiver, the receiver configured for receiving a spinal rod; and

a surgical retractor having:

a unitary ring member;

at least one elongate member pivotally coupled to the unitary ring member; and

at least one rod portion attached to an outer surface of the unitary ring member, the at least one rod portion having a different cross-sectional profile than the at least one elongate member, the at least one rod portion defining a first longitudinal axis and extending away from a center of the unitary ring member, the at least one rod portion positioned in the receiver of the pedicle screw.

9. The surgical construct of claim 8 , wherein the ring member defines an opening, the opening dimensioned for allowing a surgical instrument to pass therethrough.

10. The surgical construct of claim 8 , wherein pivotal movement of the at least one elongate member retracts tissue, thereby increasing dimensions of an operative site.

11. The surgical construct of claim 8 , wherein the retractor includes at least two elongate members.

12. The surgical construct of claim 11 , wherein a first state of the surgical retractor is defined when proximal portions of the elongate members are in close approximation.

13. The surgical construct of claim 8 , wherein the at least one elongate member is bendable about an axis other than the first longitudinal axis.

14. The surgical construct of claim 8 , wherein the unitary ring member is formed of a material having a different rigidity than the at least one elongate member.

15. A surgical construct comprising:

first and second pedicle screws, each pedicle screw including a corresponding passageway; and

a surgical retractor having:

a first elongate member;

a second elongate member;

a first arcuate member attached to one end of the first elongate member and having an arc of at least 180°;

a second arcuate member attached to one end of the second elongate member and having an arc of at least 180°;

a first rod attached to an outer surface of the first arcuate member and located in the passageway of the first pedicle screw, the first rod having a different cross-sectional profile than the first elongate member and defining a first longitudinal axis, wherein said first elongate member is bendable about a second axis, the second axis being laterally spaced from the first longitudinal axis;

a second rod attached to an outer surface of the second arcuate member and located in the passageway of the second pedicle screw;

the second elongate member bendable with respect to a third axis, the third axis being laterally spaced from the first longitudinal axis.

16. The surgical construct of claim 15 , wherein the first rod and the second rod are disposed along the first longitudinal axis.

17. The surgical construct of claim 15 , wherein the first longitudinal axis is coplanar with at least one of the second and third axes.

18. The surgical construct of claim 15 , wherein the first and second arcuate members are formed of a material having a different rigidity than the first and second elongate members.

19. The surgical construct of claim 15 , wherein the second rod has a different cross sectional profile than the second elongate member.

20. The surgical construct of claim 15 , wherein the first and second rods have different cross-sectional profiles.
