Abstract

A solid cleaning composition includes methacrylate, water, defoamer, carboxylate, sodium carbonate, metasilicate, and surfactant. The solid cleaning composition includes between about 1% and about 10% methacrylate by weight, less than about 5% water by weight, between about 1% and about 5% defoamer by weight, between about 10% and about 30% carboxylate by weight, between about 15% and about 80% sodium carbonate by weight, between about 1% and about 5% metasilicate by weight, and between about 1% and about 5% surfactant by weight. The solidification system may be used, for example, in a solid detergent composition.

Claims (51)

1. A solid cleaning composition consisting essentially of:

(a) methacrylate, wherein the methacrylate constitutes between about 1% and about 10% by weight of the solid cleaning composition, and wherein the methacrylate is selected from the group consisting of: sodium polymethacrylate, lithium polymethacrylate, potassium polymathacrylate, ammonium polymethacrylate, and alkanolamine polymethacrylates;

(b) water, wherein the water constitutes between about 5% and about 30% by weight of the solid cleaning composition;

(c) defoamer, wherein the defoamer constitutes between about 1% and about 5% by weight of the solid cleaning composition;

(d) carboxylate, wherein the carboxylate constitutes between about 10% and about 30% by weight of the solid cleaning composition;

(e) sodium carbonate, wherein the sodium carbonate constitutes between about 15% and about 80% by weight of the solid cleaning composition;

(f) metasilicate, wherein the metasilicate constitutes between about 1% and about 5% by weight of the solid cleaning composition; and

(g) surfactant, wherein the surfactant constitutes between about 1% and about 10% by weight of the solid cleaning composition;

(h) wherein the solid cleaning composition is substantially phosphorus-free;

(i) wherein the methacrylate, sodium carbonate, and water interact to form a hydrate solid; and

(j) wherein if heated at a temperature of 120 degrees Fahrenheit, the solid cleaning composition is dimensionally stable and has a growth exponent of less than about 2%.

2. The solid cleaning composition of claim 1 , wherein the methacrylate constitutes between about 1% and about 7% by weight of the solid cleaning composition.

3. The solid cleaning composition of claim 1 , wherein the defoamer constitutes between about 1% and about 3% by weight of the solid cleaning composition.

4. The solid cleaning composition of claim 1 , wherein the carboxylate constitutes between about 15% and about 25% by weight of the solid cleaning composition.

5. The solid cleaning composition of claim 1 , wherein the sodium carbonate constitutes between about 20% and about 70% by weight of the solid cleaning composition.

6. The solid cleaning composition of claim 1 , wherein the metasilicate constitutes between about 2% and about 4% by weight of the solid cleaning composition.

7. The solid cleaning composition of claim 1 , wherein the surfactant constitutes between about 2% and about 4% by weight of the solid cleaning composition.

8. A solidification matrix consisting essentially of:

(a) methacrylate, wherein the methacrylate constitutes between about 1% and about 10% by weight of the solidification matrix;

(b) sodium carbonate; and

(c) water;

(d) wherein the methacrylate, sodium carbonate, and water interact to form a hydrate solid;

(e) wherein the solidification matrix is substantially phosphorus-free; and

(f) wherein if heated at a temperature of 120 degrees Fahrenheit, the solidification matrix is dimensionally stable and has a growth exponent of less than about 2%.

9. The solidification matrix of claim 8 , wherein the methacrylate is selected from the group consisting of: sodium polymethacrylate, lithium polymethacrylate, potassium polymethacrylate, ammonium polymethacrylate, and alkanolamine polymethacrylates.

10. The solidification matrix of claim 8 , wherein the methacrylate constitutes between about 1% and about 7% by weight of the solidification matrix.

11. The solidification matrix of claim 8 , wherein the sodium carbonate constitutes between about 15% and about 80% by weight of the solidification matrix.

12. The solidification matrix of claim 11 , wherein the sodium carbonate constitutes between about 20% and about 70% by weight of the solidification matrix.

13. The solidification matrix of claim 8 , wherein the solidification matrix comprises less than about 0.5% phosphorous.

14. The solidification matrix of claim 8 , wherein the solidification matrix comprises less than about 0.5% nitrilotriacetic acid.

The solidification matrix of claim 8 , and further comprising at least one functional ingredient selected from the group consisting of: chelating agents, sequestering agents, inorganic detergents, organic detergents, alkaline sources, surfactants, cleaning agents, rinse aids, bleaching agents, sanitizers, anti-microbial agents, activators, detergent builders, fillers, defoaming agents, anti-redeposition agents, optical brighteners, dyes, odorants, secondary hardening agents, and solubility modifiers.

16. A cleaning composition consisting essentially of:

(a) a solidification matrix, wherein the solidification matrix comprises methacrylate, sodium carbonate, and water; and

(b) at least one functional ingredient selected from the group consisting of: chelating agents, sequestering agents, inorganic detergents, organic detergents, alkaline sources, surfactants, cleaning agents, rinse aids, bleaching agents, sanitizers, anti-microbial agents, activators, detergent builders, fillers, defoaming agents, anti-redeposition agents, optical brighteners, dyes, odorants, secondary hardening agents, and solubility modifiers;

(c) wherein the cleaning composition is substantially phosphorus-free;

(d) wherein the methacrylate, sodium carbonate, and water interact to form a hydrate solid; and

(e) wherein if heated at a temperature of 120 degrees Fahrenheit, the cleaning composition is dimensionally stable and has a growth exponent of less than about 2%.

17. The cleaning composition of claim 16 , wherein the methacrylate is a polymethacrylate.

18. The cleaning composition of claim 17 , wherein the polymethacrylate is selected from the group consisting of: sodium polymethacrylate, lithium polymethacrylate, potassium polymethacrylate, ammonium polymethacrylate, and alkanolamine polymethacrylates.

19. The cleaning composition of claim 16 , wherein the methacrylate constitutes between about 1% and about 10% by weight of the solidification matrix.

20. The cleaning composition of claim 19 , wherein the methacrylate constitutes between about 1% and about 7% by weight of the solidification matrix.

21. The cleaning composition of claim 16 , wherein the sodium carbonate constitutes between about 15% and about 80% by weight of the solidification matrix.

22. The cleaning composition of claim 21 , wherein the sodium carbonate constitutes between about 20% and about 70% by weight of the solidification matrix.

23. A method of solidifying a composition, the method comprising:

(a) mixing a solidification matrix consisting essentially of methacrylate, sodium carbonate, and water, wherein the solidification matrix is substantially phosphorus-free; and

(b) adding the solidification matrix to the composition to form a solidified material; and

(c) wherein if subjected to a temperature of 120 degrees Fahrenheit, the composition is dimensionally stable and has a growth exponent of less than about 2%.

24. The method of claim 23 , and further comprising forming the material into a block.

25. The method of claim 23 , and further comprising casting the material into a packaging container.

26. The method of claim 23 , wherein the methacrylate constitutes between about 1% and about 10% by weight of the solidification matrix.

27. The method of claim 23 , wherein the sodium carbonate constitutes between about 15% and about 80% by weight of the solidification matrix.
