The present invention relates generally to the field of lighting. More particularly, the present invention relates to decorative, reconfigurable or energy and maintenance efficient fluorescent light fixtures that use energy efficient lamps and ballasts, and to an apparatus for new fluorescent light fixtures and for replacing an existing fluorescent light fixture for energy efficient use. Further, the present invention relates to a system that integrates light fixtures with a suspended grid ceiling or a solid ceiling.
1. A light fixture for engagement with a ceiling, the ceiling comprising an essentially planar surface, comprising:
a housing comprising a concave inner surface and a convex outer surface, the concave inner surface defining an aperture with a perimeter having a plurality of sides that forms a cavity, the housing for receiving one or more lamps within the cavity,
a cover trim member for engagement with the housing for enclosing the cavity when the cover trim member is engaged with the perimeter of the concave surface to the housing,
a ballast rail having minimal engagement with the convex outer surface to the housing for receiving a ballast and positioning the ballast remote from the housing and exterior of the cavity formed by the housing for receiving the lamps such that the ballast and the ballast rail are in engagement with the surrounding environment, such that the displaced relationship to the housing from the ballast and the ballast rail provides for a heat sink for the ballast thereby increasing the efficiency of the ballast and the light fixture, such that the light fixture is affixed to the ceiling in a pivotal relationship having a first position with the light fixture in the same planar surface as the ceiling during operation of the light fixture and a second position with the light fixture pivoted from one of the sides of the perimeter at an approximately 90° displacement from the ceiling with the ballast exterior to the housing cavity and in an open accessible location for easy repair, removal and/or maintenance,
the ballast rail comprises a planar portion, an offset portion, a lip portion and a beveled portion, and the planar portion has one or more ballast adjustment slots for removeably securing a ballast to the ballast rail.
2. A light fixture for engagement with a ceiling, the ceiling comprising an essentially planar surface, comprising:
a housing comprising a concave inner surface and a convex outer surface, the concaved inner surface defining an aperture with a perimeter having a plurality of sides that forms a cavity, the housing for receiving one or more lamps within the cavity,
a cover trim member for engagement with the housing for enclosing the cavity when the cover trim member is engaged with the perimeter of the concave surface to the housing,
a ballast rail having minimal engagement with the convex outer surface to the housing for receiving a ballast and positioning the ballast remote from the housing and exterior of the cavity formed by the housing for receiving the lamps such that the ballast and the ballast rail are in engagement with the surrounding environment, such that the displaced relationship to the housing from the ballast and the ballast rail provides for a heat sink for the ballast thereby increasing the efficiency of the ballast and the light fixture, such that the light fixture is affixed to the ceiling in a pivotal relationship having a first position with the light fixture in the same planar surface as the ceiling during operation of the light fixture and a second position with the light fixture pivoted from one of the sides of the perimeter at an approximately 90° displacement from the ceiling with the ballast exterior to the housing cavity and in an open accessible location for easy repair, removal and/or maintenance,
the ballast rail comprises a planar portion, an offset portion, a lip portion and a beveled portion such that the planar portion has one or more ballast adjustment slots for removeably securing the ballast to the ballast rail,
the ballast rail comprises a collet for securing the ballast rail to the housing for providing enhanced heat sink effects for the ballast attached to the ballast rail,
the collet comprises a planar member, a lip portion, a beveled portion and one or more apertures.
