Abstract

A method of removing an implanted vessel filter by a femoral approach comprising the steps of providing a catheter with a curved tip, inserting a straightening device into the catheter to move the catheter tip from a curved position to a more straightened position, advancing the catheter tip through the femoral vein and past a cranial end of the filter, withdrawing the straightening device to enable the catheter tip to return to the curved condition, and inserting a filter grasping device though the catheter and a curved catheter tip to exit a distal portion to grasp the filter.

Claims (18)

1. A method of removing an implanted vessel filter by a femoral approach comprising the steps of:

providing a catheter with a proximal portion, a distal portion, a longitudinal axis and a curved tip at a distalmost end of the catheter curving toward the proximal portion of the catheter, the curved tip terminating in an opening;

inserting a straightening device into the catheter to move the catheter tip from a curved position to a more straightened position;

advancing the catheter tip through the femoral vein and past a cranial end of the implanted filter;

withdrawing the straightening device to enable the catheter tip to return to the curved position such that the opening faces the proximal portion of the catheter and faces the cranial end of the filter; and

inserting through a proximal portion of the catheter a filter grasping device through the catheter and curved catheter tip to exit the opening of the curved tip of the distal portion of the catheter to grasp the filter.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of inserting the filter grasping device includes the step of inserting a snare to engage the filter.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the filter has a hook portion at its cranial end, and the step of inserting the snare includes placing a wire of the snare over the hook portion.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of pulling the filter into a lumen of the catheter after grasping of the filter.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of advancing the catheter tip includes the step of advancing the catheter and straightening device over a guidewire.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of withdrawing the filter and grasping device through the catheter.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein subsequent to the step of withdrawing the filter, the method includes the step of moving the catheter tip to a more straightened position to facilitate removal of the catheter.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the catheter tip is moved to a more straightened position by the step of inserting the straightening device through a lumen of the catheter.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of advancing the catheter after grasping the filter to disengage hooks of the filter from a vessel wall.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the filter is formed from a laser cut tube and composed of shape memory material.

11. The vessel filter of claim 1 , wherein a filter portion of the filter includes a plurality of spaced apart filter struts and a plurality of connecting struts extending at an angle from the filter struts to form closed geometric shapes.

12. The vessel filter of claim 1 , wherein an end portion of the filter includes vessel engaging hooks to enhance retention of the filter.

13. The vessel filter of claim 1 , wherein a first region of the filter further includes a retrieval region, the retrieval region including a hook having a cutout exposing an internal annular surface, the annular surface dimensioned to receive a portion of the filter grasping device.
