Abstract

A signal to be transmitted is modified. An ultra wideband (UWB) signal to be transmitted is obtained, the UWB signal having a data carrying sub-band and a non data carrying sub-band. Information in the non data carrying sub-band is modified so that the power associated with the non data carrying sub-band is less than the power prior to the modification. Information in the data carrying sub-band is modified so that the power associated with the data carrying sub-band is greater than the power prior to the modification. The amount by which the data carrying sub-band increases in power is based at least in part on the amount by which the non data carrying sub-band decreases in power. A UWB signal is transmitted having the modified information in the non data carrying sub-band and the modified information in the data carrying sub-band.

Claims (33)

1. A method for modifying a signal to be transmitted, comprising:

obtaining an ultra wideband (UWB) signal to be transmitted having a data carrying sub-band and a non data carrying sub-band;

using a processor to modify information in the non data carrying sub-band so that the power associated with the non data carrying sub-band is less than the power prior to the modification;

using a processor to modify information in the data carrying sub-band so that the power associated with the data carrying sub-band is greater than the power prior to the modification, wherein the amount by which the data carrying sub-band increases in power is based at least in part on the amount by which the non data carrying sub-band decreases in power; and

transmitting a UWB signal having the modified information in the non data carrying sub-band and the modified information in the data carrying sub-band.

2. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the amount by which the data carrying sub-band increases in power equals the amount by which the non data carrying sub-band decreases in power.

3. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the non data carrying sub-band is associated with a pilot tone.

4. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the information in the data carrying sub-band includes a symbol.

5. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the transmitted UWB signal conforms to a regulatory requirement.

6. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the UWB signal to be transmitted has a plurality of data carrying sub-bands and information is modified for a subset of said plurality of data carrying sub-bands.

7. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the UWB signal to be transmitted has a plurality of non data carrying sub-bands and information is modified for a subset of said plurality of non data carrying sub-bands.

8. The method as recited in claim 1 further comprising determining whether to modifying information in the non data carrying sub-band and data carrying sub-band.

9. The method as recited in claim 8 , wherein determining is based at least in part on an indication received from another wireless device.

10. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein modifying information in the non data carrying sub-band and/or the data carrying sub-band includes modifying information prior to an Inverse Fast Fourier Transform (IFFT).

11. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein modifying information in the non data carrying sub-band and/or the data carrying sub-band includes amplitude scaling.

12. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein modifying information in the non data carrying sub-band and/or the data carrying sub-band includes filtering.

13. A system for modifying a signal to be transmitted, comprising:

a signal interface configured to obtain an ultra wideband (UWB) signal to be transmitted having a data carrying sub-band and a non data carrying sub-band;

a signal processor configured to:

modify information in the non data carrying sub-band so that the power associated with the non data carrying sub-band is less than the power prior to the modification; and

modify information in the data carrying sub-band so that the power associated with the data carrying sub-band is greater than the power prior to the modification, wherein the amount by which the data carrying sub-band increases in power is based at least in part on the amount by which the non data carrying sub-band decreases in power; and

a transmitter configured to transmit a UWB signal having the modified information in the non data carrying sub-band and the modified information in the data carrying sub-band.

14. The system as recited in claim 13 , wherein the amount by which the data carrying sub-band increases in power equals the amount by which the non data carrying sub-band decreases in power.

15. The system as recited in claim 13 further comprising a controller configured to determine whether to modifying information in the non data carrying sub-band and data carrying sub-band.

16. The system as recited in claim 15 , wherein the controller is configured to determine based at least in part on an indication received from another wireless device.

17. The system as recited in claim 13 , wherein the signal processor is configured to modify information in the non data carrying sub-band and/or the data carrying sub-band by modifying information prior to an Inverse Fast Fourier Transform (IFFT).

18. The system as recited in claim 13 , wherein the signal processor is configured to modify information in the non data carrying sub-band and/or the data carrying sub-band by amplitude scaling.

19. The system as recited in claim 13 , wherein the signal processor is configured to modify information in the non data carrying sub-band and/or the data carrying sub-band by filtering.

20. A computer program product for modifying a signal to be transmitted, the computer program product being embodied in a computer readable storage medium and comprising computer instructions which when executed by a computer cause the computer to:

obtaining an ultra wideband (UWB) signal to be transmitted having a data carrying sub-band and a non data carrying sub-band;

modifying information in the non data carrying sub-band so that the power associated with the non data carrying sub-band is less than the power prior to the modification;

modifying information in the data carrying sub-band so that the power associated with the data carrying sub-band is greater than the power prior to the modification, wherein the amount by which the data carrying sub-band increases in power is based at least in part on the amount by which the non data carrying sub-band decreases in power; and

transmitting a UWB signal having the modified information in the non data carrying sub-band and the modified information in the data carrying sub-band.
