Abstract

A wound closure apparatus having a porous pad adapted to be fluidly connected to a vacuum pump. The pad is placed over or within a tissue site, and the vacuum pump may be activated to draw air and exudates from the tissue site. The pad contains multiple pore sizes to prevent granulation tissue from migrating into the pad as reduced pressure treatment is applied. The pad has an outer surface adjacent the wound with pore sizes of a diameter of approximately 100 microns or less to prevent tissue from growing into the pad and is treated for biocompatibility.

Claims (33)

1. A process for making a pad for providing a reduced pressure to a tissue site, the process comprising:

providing a fluid permeable material having pores of a first average size;

reducing a portion of the pores in the fluid permeable material to a second average size, wherein the first average size is greater than the second average size; and

providing a pathway for supplying reduced pressure to the pad;

wherein reduced pressure is applied to the pad.

2. The process of claim 1 , wherein reducing the portion of the pores in the fluid permeable material to a second average size comprises:

placing the portion of pores into a liquid coating material; and

hardening the liquid coating material to form a tissue-lubricious surface on the fluid permeable material and a layer of micropores having pores of the second average size adjacent to the tissue-lubricious surface.

3. The process of claim 2 , further comprising modifying the liquid coating material with an antimicrobial agent.

4. The process of claim 1 , wherein reducing the portion of the pores in the fluid permeable material comprises heating the portion of the pores to shrink the pores to the second average size.

5. The process of claim 2 , wherein the liquid coating material is a hydrophilic foam solution.

6. The process of claim 2 , wherein hardening the liquid coating material includes drying the liquid coating material.

7. The process of claim 2 , wherein placing the portion of the pores into the liquid coating material includes dipping the fluid permeable material approximately one millimeter into the liquid coating material.

8. The process of claim 2 , wherein the tissue-lubricious surface is biocompatible.

9. The process of claim 2 , wherein the tissue-lubricious surface is growth factor impregnated.

10. The process of claim 2 , wherein the tissue-lubricious surface is a molecular graft.

11. The process of claim 2 , wherein the tissue-lubricious surface includes the micropores.

12. The process of claim 3 , wherein the antimicrobial agent prevents bacterial migration through the fluid permeable material.

13. The process of claim 1 , wherein reducing the portion of the pores in the fluid permeable material to a second average size comprises:

placing the portion of the pores into a liquid coating material; and

drying the liquid coating material to form a layer of micropores having pores of the second average size.

14. The process of claim 13 , wherein the liquid coating material is a hydrophilic foam solution.

15. The process of claim 13 , wherein drying the liquid coating material further forms a tissue-compatible lubricious surface.

16. The process of claim 13 , wherein placing the portion of the pores into the liquid coating material includes dipping the fluid permeable material approximately one millimeter into the liquid coating material.

17. The process of claim 13 , wherein the layer of micropores is biocompatible.

18. The process of claim 4 , wherein heating the portion of the pores includes melting a surface of the fluid permeable material to form a micropore layer.

19. The process of claim 18 , wherein the surface is melted using a hot plate.

20. A process for making a pad, comprising:

providing a fluid permeable material having pores of a first average size; and

reducing a portion of the pores in the fluid permeable material to a second average size, comprising:

(i) placing a portion of the pores into a liquid coating material, and

(ii) hardening the liquid coating material to form a tissue-lubricious surface on the fluid permeable material and a layer of micropores having pores of a second average size adjacent to the tissue-lubricious surface;

wherein the first average size is greater than the second average size.
