Abstract

A method of encapsulating TDM data into individual data packets for transmission across a packet network includes delineating the TDM data into one or more signaling multiframes, wherein each signaling multiframe includes one period of a periodic signaling pattern. The method also includes appending a header that is associated with the individual data packets to each of the signaling multiframes of TDM data. Further, a method of selecting the number of multiframes of TDM data in the data packet includes calculating the efficiency of the data packet as a function of the number of multiframes, and selecting the number of multiframes so that the efficiency of the data packet increases exponentially as a number of time-slots in the TDM data increases.

Claims (32)

1. A method of encapsulating data into individual data packets for transmission across a packet network, comprising:

delineating Time Division Multiplex (TDM) data into one or more signaling multiframes, wherein each signaling multiframe includes one period of a periodic signaling pattern;

appending a header associated with the individual data packets to each of the one or more signaling multiframes of TDM data; and

appending a modified RTP header to each of the one or more signaling multiframes;

wherein an efficiency of the individual data packets increases as a number of time-slots in the TDM data increases.

2. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising delineating the TDM data such that a first byte in the one or more signaling multiframes is directly adjacent to the header.

3. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising extracting the TDM data from one or more time-slots from a TDM data stream.

4. A data packet constructed and arranged to encapsulate data for transmission over a packet network, comprising:

a segment of the Time Division Multiplex (TDM) data from one or more TDM time-slots, wherein the segment of the TDM data corresponds to a signaling multiframe of the TDM data including one period of a periodic signaling pattern; and

a header associated with the data packet appended to the segment of the TDM data, wherein the header includes an RTP header including an extended RTP header having data associated with a starting time-slot, a number of time-slots per frame, and a number of multiframes in the data packet;

wherein an efficiency of the data packet increases as the number of TDM time-slots in the TDM data increases.

5. The data packet according to claim 4 , wherein the TDM data includes T1 data.

6. The data packet according to claim 4 , wherein the TDM data includes E1 data.

7. The data packet according to claim 4 , wherein the segment of TDM data is delineated such that a first byte in the signaling multiframe is directly adjacent to the header.

8. The data packet according to claim 4 , wherein the signaling multiframe corresponds to a multiframe associated with the TDM data.

9. The data packet according to claim 8 , wherein the multiframe includes 16 frames for E1 data.

10. The data packet according to claim 8 , wherein the multiframe includes 24 frames for T1 data.

11. A system for encapsulating Time Division Multiplex (TDM) data in a packet, comprising:

a processor configured to receive information and calculate a parameter containing TDM data based on the information;

a switch configured to receive the parameter from the processor via a communications path; and

a packet assembler configured to receive the parameter from the switch and encapsulate the TDM data within a packet;

wherein the information is selected from a group consisting of maximum time slots for a frame, an overhead size, a plurality of frames for signaling multiframes, a minimum efficiency, a time constant, a number of time-slots associated with the TDM data, and other relevant data information; and

wherein the parameter includes a number of time-slots in the TDM data so an efficiency of the packet increases as the number of time-slots in the TDM data increases.

12. The system of claim 11 wherein the processor is configured to use an Exponential Weighting Algorithm.

13. The system of claim 11 wherein the switch is configured to receive a manual setting to bypass an Exponential Weighting Algorithm.

14. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the efficiency of the individual data packets increases exponentially as the number of time-slots in the TDM data increases.

15. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the efficiency of the individual data packets is increased by selecting a number of the one or more signaling multiframes such that the efficiency of the individual data packets increases exponentially as the number of time-slots in the TDM data increases.

16. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the modified RTP header is an extended RTP header having data associated with a starting time-slot, a number of time-slots per frame, and a number of multiframes in the data packet.

17. The data packet according to claim 4 , wherein the efficiency of the data packet increases exponentially as the number of time-slots in the TDM data increases.

18. The packet according to claim 4 , wherein the efficiency of the data packet is increased by selecting a number of the plurality of frames for signaling multiframes such that the efficiency of the data packet increases exponentially as the number of time-slots in the TDM data increases.

19. The system of claim 11 wherein the parameter includes a number of time-slots in the TDM data so an efficiency of the packet increases exponentially as the number of time-slots in the TDM data increases.

20. The system of claim 11 wherein the efficiency of the data packet is increased by selecting a number of the plurality of frames for signaling multiframes such that the efficiency of the data packet increases exponentially as a number of time-slots in the TDM data increases.
