Abstract

Embodiments of the invention include methods of tissue/wound treatment and associated devices and systems, including devices for breaching bio-films contained in and around wounds, devices for maximizing moisture vapor transmission rate, and tissue dressings with added barrier features for permeable surfaces.

Claims (19)

1. A tissue dressing treatment device comprising;

a reservoir having contained therein one or more therapeutic materials, the reservoir closed on one side by a permeable film; and

an array of a plurality of micropenetrators provided as a plurality of sharp, penetrating and abrasive particles adjacent to the permeable film, the micropenetrator particles not piercing the permeable film;

wherein, with the tissue dressing applied to a tissue area, applying pressure causes the micropenetrator particles to penetrate and mechanically disrupt a surface of the tissue area, enabling delivery of the therapeutic material from the reservoir to the tissue.

2. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the micropenetrator particles comprise bioactive materials of glass or ceramics.

3. The device according to claim 2 , wherein the glass is composed with a percentage of at least one of SiO, CaO, Na2O, and P2O5.

4. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the tissue dressing device comes prepackaged with the one or more therapeutic materials contained in the reservoir.

5. The device according to claim 4 , wherein the therapeutic materials include one or more predetermined gases and the tissue dressing does not generate the one or more predetermined gases.

6. The device according to claim 5 , wherein the tissue dressing further comprise gas generating means for generating the one or more predetermined gases.

The device according to claim 1 , further comprising a positive pressure device for creating a positive pressure within the reservoir to actively displace the one or more therapeutic materials through the micropenetrators once the micropenetrator particles penetrate the surface of the tissue area.

8. The device according to claim 7 , wherein the positive pressure device comprises a squeeze bulb.

9. The device according to claim 7 , wherein the positive pressure device comprises an external source of the one or more therapeutic materials.

10. A method for treating tissue comprising the steps of:

(a) providing a tissue dressing comprising a reservoir having contained therein one or more therapeutic materials with a permeable film closing one side of the reservoir, and an array of a plurality of micropenetrators provided as abrasive particles adjacent to the permeable film, the micropenetrator particles not piercing the permeable film;

(b) affixing the tissue dressing to a tissue area; and

(c) applying pressure, causing the micropenetrator particles to penetrate and disrupt a surface of the tissue area, delivering therapeutic material from the reservoir into the tissue.

11. The method according to claim 10 , further comprising creating an increased pressure within the reservoir to actively drive the one or more therapeutic materials from the reservoir once the abrasive particles have penetrated the surface of the tissue area.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the particles comprise bioactive materials of glass or ceramics.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the glass is composed with a percentage of at least one of SiO, CaO, Na2O, and P2O5.
