Abstract

A method and system for generating information about portable device advertising is disclosed. Embodiments are directed to a mechanism for distinguishing advertisements accessed by, actual portable devices and/or emulated portable devices, where the distinguished advertisements may then be used to generate information about portable device advertising. The advertisements may be communicated via any advertising medium accessible to portable devices, systems emulating portable devices, etc. Additionally, access to the advertisements may be controlled by actual usage of devices, or alternatively, by simulated usage of the devices in accordance with determined simulation parameters. Actual device usage may also be gathered and accessed to configure and/or adjust the simulation parameters used in the simulations.

executing an instruction using a processor to simulate the actual portable device usage on at least one of a network-connected portable device or a network-connected emulator based on the simulation parameters corresponding to the usage profile, the at least one of the network-connected portable device or the network-connected emulator capable of reporting physical locations of the at least one of the network-connected portable device or the network-connected emulator, the simulating to cause the at least one of the network-connected portable device or the network-connected emulator to access network-based media based on the accesses to the different media types indicated in the usage profile, and the simulating performed by the processor without a user controlling the usage of the network-connected portable device or the network-connected emulator;

executing an instruction by the processor at different locations to cause the processor to store in a memory location information indicative of corresponding ones of the physical locations of the at least one of the network-connected portable device or the network-connected emulator;

detecting, by executing an instruction with the processor, the network-based media accessed based on at least one of the physical locations via the network-connected portable device or the network-connected emulator via a network connection in response to the simulated usage of the network-connected portable device or the network-connected emulator; and

generating, by executing an instruction with the processor, information about portable device advertising based on the detected network-based media.

2. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the usage profile includes different use times in a representative day.

3. The method as defined in claim 2 , wherein a first one of the use times corresponds to an Internet access use type, a second one of the use times corresponds to a television access use type, and a third one of the use times corresponds to a local media playback use type.

4. The method as defined in claim 3 , wherein a first one of the use locations corresponds to the first one of the use times, the first one of the use locations being different from a second one of the use locations corresponding to at least one of the second one of the use times or the third one of the use times.

5. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein generating the information about the portable device advertising includes identifying an attribute of an advertisement, the attribute including an advertised product, an advertised service, or an advertisement genre.

6. The method as defined in claim 5 , wherein generating the information about the portable device advertising further includes storing the attribute in connection with a corresponding one of the use times and a corresponding one of the use locations.

7. The method as defined in claim 1 , further including indicating an audience exposure to the detected network-based media.

8. An apparatus to generate information about portable device advertising, the apparatus comprising:

a memory to store a usage profile representative of actual portable device usage by persons having similar usage characteristics, the usage profile including simulation parameters indicative of accesses to different media types and indicative of use locations;

a processor to:

simulate the actual portable device usage on at least one of a network-connected portable device or a network-connected emulator based on the simulation parameters corresponding to the usage profile, the at least one of the network-connected portable device of the network-connected emulator capable of reporting physical locations of the at least one of the network-connected portable device or the network-connected emulator, the simulating to cause the at least one of the network-connected portable device or the network-connected emulator to access network-based media based on the accesses to the different media types indicated in the usage profile, and the simulating to be performed by the processor without a user controlling the usage of the network-connected portable device or the network-connected emulator;

store in a memory location information indicative of different physical locations of the at least one of the network-connected portable device or the network-connected emulator;

detect the network-based media accessed based on at least one of the physical locations via the network-connected portable device or the network-connected emulator via a network connection in response to the simulated usage of the network-connected portable device or the network-connected emulator; and

generate portable device advertising information based on the detected network-based media.

9. The apparatus as defined in claim 8 , wherein the usage profile includes different use times in a representative day.

10. The apparatus as defined in claim 9 , wherein a first one of the use times corresponds to an Internet access use type, a second one of the use times corresponds to a television access use type, and a third one of the use times corresponds to a local media playback use type.

11. The apparatus as defined in claim 10 , wherein a first one of the use locations corresponds to the first one of the use times, the first one of the use locations being different from a second one of the use locations corresponding to at least one of the second one of the use times or the third one of the use times.

12. The apparatus as defined in claim 8 , wherein the processor is to generate the portable device advertising information by identifying an attribute for an advertisement, the attribute including an advertised product, an advertised service, or an advertisement genre.

13. The apparatus as defined in claim 12 , wherein the processor is to generate the portable device advertising information by respectively storing the attribute in connection with corresponding ones of the use times and corresponding ones of the use locations.

14. The apparatus as defined in claim 8 , wherein the network-based media presented in response to the simulated usage of the portable device is indicative of an audience exposure to the detected network-based media.

15. A computer readable storage device or storage disc comprising instructions that, when executed, cause a processor to at least:

access a usage profile representative of actual portable device usage by persons having similar usage characteristics, the usage profile including simulation parameters indicative of accesses to different media types and indicative of use locations;

simulate the actual portable device usage on at least one of a network-connected portable device or a network-connected emulator based on the simulation parameters corresponding to the usage profile, the at least one of the network-connected portable device or the network-connected emulator capable of reporting physical locations of the at least one of the network-connected portable device or the network-connected emulator, the simulating to cause the at least one of the network-connected portable device or the network-connected emulator to access network-based media based on the accesses to the different media types indicated in the usage profile, and the simulation to be performed by the processor without a user controlling the usage of the network-connected portable device or the network-connected emulator;
