Abstract

A method is disclosed for packaging a curable resin composition and a catalyst composition that react with each other when mixed, comprising providing a partitioned tube for receiving the resin composition and the curing agent in separate compartments; delivering a stream of a resin composition into one compartment of the tube; delivering a stream of a curing agent in the other compartment of the tube; advancing the partitioned tube and constricting and sealing the partitioned tube at spaced apart intervals and severing the sealed tube to produce a package partitioning the resin composition from the catalyst composition. Solid particulate is continuously added into the stream of at least one of the catalyst composition and the resin composition and mixing the solid particulate and stream to produce a mixed composition; and the relative amount of solid particulate in the mixed composition is controlled by continuously determining the mass of solid particulate added to the mass of the stream.

Claims (23)

1. In a method of producing packages containing a curable resin composition and a catalyst composition that react with each other when mixed, comprising providing a partitioned tube for receiving the resin composition and the catalyst composition in separate compartments; delivering a stream of a resin composition into one compartment of the tube; delivering a stream of a catalyst composition in the other compartment of the tube; advancing the partitioned tube and constricting and sealing the partitioned tube at spaced apart intervals and severing the sealed tube to produce a package partitioning the resin composition from the catalyst composition, the improvement comprising:

continuously adding solid particulate into the stream of at least one of the catalyst composition and the resin composition and mixing the solid particulate into the stream to produce at least one mixed composition; and

controlling the relative amount of solid particulate in the mixed composition by continuously determining the mass of solid particulate added to the mass of the stream, wherein the production of the packages partitioning the resin composition from the catalyst composition is continuous.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein solid particulate is added into each of the stream of the catalyst composition and the stream of the resin composition to produce a mixed catalyst composition and a mixed resin composition.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the solid particulate comprises coarse particulates and fine particulates, such that the mass of the coarse particulates and the mass of the fine particulates added to the stream are both continuously determined using mass meters.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein output from the mass meters is used to adjust the relative amount of the coarse particulates and the fine particulates added to the stream.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the amount of solid particulate is controlled to maintain a predetermined viscosity of the mixed resin composition or the mixed catalyst composition or both.

6. The method of claim 2 , wherein the mixed resin composition is transferred to a resin composition holding device, said device comprising an outlet, said outlet being in communication with a fill tube of a packaging machine for delivery of the resin composition.

7. The method of claim 2 , wherein the mixed catalyst composition is transferred to a catalyst composition holding device, the outlet of said device being in communication with a fill tube of a packaging machine for delivery of the catalyst composition.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the stream of the resin composition is provided by:

providing a plurality of resin components;

mixing the resin components to obtain the resin composition; and

adjusting the ratio of the resinous components in the resin composition as needed.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the stream of catalyst composition is provided by:

providing a catalyst component, diluting the catalyst component with a solvent to obtain the catalyst composition; and

adjusting the ratio of catalyst component and solvent in the catalyst composition as needed.

10. A method of producing packages containing a method of producing packages containing a curable resin composition and a catalyst composition that react with each other when mixed, comprising providing a partitioned tube for receiving the resin composition and the catalyst composition in separate compartments; delivering a stream of a resin composition into one compartment of the tube; delivering a stream of a catalyst composition in the other compartment of the tube; advancing the partitioned tube and constricting and sealing the partitioned tube at spaced apart intervals and severing the sealed tube to produce a package partitioning the resin composition from the catalyst composition, the improvement comprising:

continuously adding solid particulate into the stream of at least one of the catalyst composition and the resin composition and mixing the solid particulate into the stream to produce at least one mixed composition;

controlling the relative amount of solid particulate in the mixed composition by continuously determining the mass of solid particulate added to the mass of the stream; and

flowing a stream of the mixed composition into a mixer comprising a mixing chamber having an inlet and an outlet, wherein a portion of the mixed composition flows through an outlet to a packaging device and another portion flows back toward the inlet end and mixes with a fresh stream of the mixed composition entering the mixing chamber.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the mixing chamber comprises a parallel set of twin screws.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the twin screws pump the mixture at a rate 10 times greater than the rate at which the fresh stream enters the chamber.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the mixed stream exits the chamber at a temperature of 2-50° C. higher than the temperature of the fresh stream.
