Abstract

The present subject matter relates generally to a system and a method for crumpling paper substrates. Specifically, the system and method provide for the crumpling of paper substrates to form fill material to be utilized in product packaging to fill void space and/or to wrap around products thereby allowing for safe transport of the products. The system comprises, generally, a paper crumpling machine having a braking mechanism for preventing uncontrolled rolling of a paper roll, a rake for effectively guiding paper sheeting into the paper crumpling machine, and a disengagement mechanism for easily disengaging the paper sheeting from the apparatus if necessary, and an automatic tensioning device for providing even distribution of tension on the paper sheeting. In addition, the apparatus comprises a cutting mechanism and/or a clamping mechanism for allowing cutting and/or clamping of the crumpled paper substrate.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the tines are spaced from each other laterally to define spaces therebetween, such that sheeting material pulled over the tines is biased into the spaces to form the wave pattern due to the longitudinal curvature of the tines.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the guide has a longitudinally curved convex shape configured to cause the sheeting material to be pulled into the spaces to form the wave pattern.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein tines are disposed with respect to each other along a laterally curved shape such that the guides are collectively arranged in a laterally curved convex shape to decrease tension at the edges of the sheeting material as the sheeting material passes over the tines.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the longitudinal curvature of the guide is configured to cause the sheeting material to change direction from a point of entry into the guide to a point of exit from the guide to increase tension of the sheeting material against the tines for pulling the sheeting material into the spaces.

13. An apparatus for crumpling a length of sheeting material for making a cushioning product, comprising:

a feeder for feeding sheeting material;

a first roller connected to a drive mechanism;

a magnet having a magnetic force for holding said second roller adjacent said first roller, the magnet and second roller being configured for allowing the second roller to automatically move away from said first roller to disengage the sheeting material from the first roller when the sheeting material overloads between the first roller and second roller and creates a force that exceeds a magnetic force of the magnet.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , further comprising a handle which assists in moving said second roller away from said first roller.

15. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein said second roller is configured for changing the tension applied to the sheeting material as the sheeting material travels between the first roller and the second roller.

a pivotable door attached to said pivot point and a third roller attached to said pivotable door, said first arm magnetically held to said pivotable door for holding said second roller adjacent said first roller, wherein said sheeting material traverses under said third roller causing upward pressure on said third roller; and

said pivotable door interconnected with said first arm at said pivot point, wherein upward pressure on said third roller causes tension applied against said first roller by said second roller to increase.

19. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the feeder comprises a guide having a plurality of longitudinally disposed tines for guiding said sheeting material and disposing a wave pattern in said sheeting material, wherein said tines are curved longitudinally.
