Abstract

A hydraulic fluid reservoir and hydraulic pump combination has at least one hydraulic fluid port and includes a container with a hollow body having a top and a conduit having a bottom within the container and a top above the bottom. The conduit has an opening adjacent to the bottom of the conduit. The opening is spaced apart below the top of the container. A closure member is releasably, sealingly connected to the top of the conduit. Hydraulic fluid can be added to the container via the conduit up to the level of the opening of the conduit. Addition of further hydraulic fluid fills the conduit to the top thereof and the conduit overflows if additional hydraulic fluid is added after the top of the conduit is reached by the fluid. Preferably the container has a main interior chamber and a smaller chamber which is adjacent to one of the side walls of the container. The smaller chamber is has a bottom opening near the bottom of the smaller chamber which communicates with the main interior chamber. Hydraulic fluid enters the smaller chamber through the opening and reaches the level of hydraulic fluid in the main interior chamber. Bubbles in the hydraulic fluid within the main interior chamber are isolated from the smaller chamber and accordingly do not impair the reading of the hydraulic fluid level by a photo detector.

Claims (28)

1. A hydraulic fluid reservoir having at least one hydraulic fluid port and comprising:

a container having a hollow body with a top, the container having an interior;

a means for creating and maintaining an air pocket within the container, the means comprising a conduit having an upper portion extending upwardly from the top of the container and a lower portion extending downwardly from the upper portion within the interior of the container, the conduit having a bottom within the container and a top above the bottom thereof, the conduit having an opening adjacent to the bottom of the conduit, the opening being spaced-apart below the top of the container, the opening being so positioned within the container as to create the air pocket within the container when hydraulic fluid is poured through the conduit to fill the container, the air pocket being trapped in the container between the top of the container and the bottom of the conduit when the container is so filled with hydraulic fluid; and

a closure member releasably and sealingly connected to the top of the conduit, the reservoir being sealed apart from said closure member and said at least one port when the closure member is sealingly connected to the top of the conduit,

whereby addition of further hydraulic fluid fills the conduit to the top thereof and the conduit overflows if additional hydraulic fluid is added after the top of the conduit is reached by the fluid.

2. A hydraulic fluid reservoir as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the conduit is tubular.

3. A hydraulic fluid reservoir as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the conduit has a cylindrical side wall on the bottom portion thereof, the opening being adjacent to the bottom of the conduit.

4. A hydraulic fluid reservoir as claimed in claim 3 , wherein the conduit has a bottom surface extending part way across the bottom of the conduit from the side wall to the opening in the conduit, the bottom surface being visible from the top of the conduit when the closure member is removed.

5. A hydraulic system for a marine tilt or trim cylinder, the system comprising:

a reservoir container having a hollow body with a top, the reservoir container having a means for creating and maintaining an air pocket within the container, the means comprising a conduit having a bottom within the container and a top above the bottom thereof, the conduit having an opening adjacent to the bottom of the conduit, the opening being spaced-apart below the top of the container;

a closure member releasably, sealingly connected to the top of the conduit;

at least one hydraulic port and a hydraulic pump, the at least one hydraulic port and hydraulic pump being mounted on the container;

a hydraulic cylinder, the hydraulic cylinder being hydraulically connected to the reservoir container, to hydraulic cylinder being unbalanced;

hydraulic fluid filling the container to the level of the opening of the conduit, further hydraulic fluid overflowing out of the conduit if additional hydraulic fluid is added after the top of the conduit is reached by the fluid; and

the air pocket, the air pocket being trapped in the container between the top of the container and the bottom of the conduit when the container is so filled with hydraulic fluid to the level of the opening of the conduit, the air pocket being so shaped to enable the reservoir to accommodate different volumes of hydraulic fluid moving into and out of the reservoir due to the unbalanced hydraulic cylinder.

6. A system as claimed in claim 5 , wherein the reservoir is sealed apart from said closure member and said at least one port when the closure member is sealingly connected to the top of the conduit, and the pump is mounted on the container.

7. A system as claimed in claim 6 , wherein the container has an interior and the conduit has in an upper portion extending upwardly from the top of the container and a lower portion extending downwardly from the top of the container within the interior of the container.

8. A system as claimed in claim 7 , wherein the conduit is tubular.

9. A system as claimed in claim 8 , wherein the conduit has a cylindrical side wall on the bottom portion thereof, the opening being adjacent to the bottom of the conduit and formed at an acute angle with the side wall.

10. A system as claimed in claim 9 , wherein the conduit has a bottom surface extending part way across the bottom of the conduit from the side wall to the opening in the conduit, the bottom surface being visible from the top of the conduit when the closure member is removed.

11. The system as claimed in claim 5 , wherein the opening of the conduit is so positioned within the reservoir container as to create the air pocket.

12. The system as claimed in claim 5 , wherein the reservoir container as a marine hydraulic reservoir container, the hydraulic cylinder is a marine tilt or trim cylinder and the hydraulic pump is a marine hydraulic pump.

13. A method of accommodating changes in volume of hydraulic fluid in a hydraulic system for a marine tilt or trim cylinder, the method comprising:

providing a marine tilt or trim cylinder, the marine tilt or trim cylinder being unbalanced;

hydraulically connecting the marine tilt or trim cylinder to a reservoir container at least one port, the reservoir container having a hollow body with a top;

providing the reservoir container with a means for creating and maintaining an air pocket within the container, the means comprising a conduit having a bottom within the container and a top above the bottom thereof, the conduit having an opening adjacent to the bottom of the conduit, the opening being spaced-apart below the top of the container; and

providing the reservoir container with the air pocket trapped between the top of the container and the bottom of the conduit by filling the reservoir container with hydraulic fluid to the level of the opening of the conduit, further hydraulic fluid overflowing out of the conduit if additional hydraulic fluid is added after thy top of the conduit is reached by the fluid, and by so positioning the opening of the conduit within the reservoir container,

whereby the air pocket within the reservoir container thereby accommodates the changes in volume of hydraulic fluid moving into and out of the reservoir container due to the unbalanced hydraulic cylinder.
