Abstract

An implantable electrode with increased stability having a clustered structure wherein the surface of the electrode is covered with a material comprising openings which are filled with sticks or posts. An implantable electrode with increased stability wherein the surface is of the electrode comprises mesh grids which are filled with sticks which are filed with a conducting or insulating material. A method of manufacturing an electrode with increased stability, comprising: depositing a metal layer on an base layer; applying photoresist layer on the metal layer; patterning the photoresist layer providing openings; electroplating the openings with metal; removing the photoresist layer leaving spaces; and filling the spaces with polymer. A method of manufacturing an electrode with increased stability, comprising: depositing a metal layer on an base layer; applying a polymer layer on the metal layer; applying photoresist layer on the polymer layer; patterning the photoresist layer providing openings; electroplating the openings with metal; and removing the photoresist layer.

Claims (15)

1. An implantable electrode with increased stability having a common structure wherein the surface of the electrode common structure is covered with an insulating material defining openings which are filled with a plurality of clustered structures including sticks or posts, each of the sticks and posts being common and forming a single electrode.

2. The electrode according to claim 1 wherein the insulating material comprises at least one polymer.

3. The electrode according to claim 2 wherein the polymer comprises polyimide, silicone, peek or parylene, or mixtures thereof.

4. The electrode according to claim 1 wherein the sticks or posts comprise Pt, Ir, Au, Ru, Pd, IrO or alloys thereof.

5. An implantable electrode with increased stability wherein the electrode has a common structure and the surface of the electrode common structure comprises insulating mesh grids which are filled with a plurality clustered structures including sticks and filled with conducting or insulating material.

6. The electrode according to claim 5 wherein the mesh grids comprises at least one polymer.

7. The electrode according to claim 6 wherein the mesh grids comprises polyimide, silicone, peek or parylene, or mixtures thereof.

8. The electrode according to claim 5 comprising Pt, Ir, Au, Ru, Pd, IrO or alloys thereof.

9. The electrode according to claim 5 comprising a material covering the edge of the electrode.

10. The electrode according to claim 9 wherein the material is an insulator and comprises polyimide, silicone, peek or parylene, or mixtures thereof and or is conductive and comprises Pt, Ir, Au, Ru, Pd, IrO or alloys thereof.

11. The electrode according to claim 9 wherein the electrode comprises material rings.

12. The electrode according to claim 9 wherein the electrode comprises circle, star, square or ring shapes.

13. A flexible electrode array comprising at least one electrode according to claim 1 .

14. A flexible electrode array comprising at least one electrode according to claim 5 .

15. A flexible electrode array comprising at least one electrode according to claim 9 .
