Abstract

A fiber distribution hub includes a swing frame chassis pivotally mounted within an enclosure. The swing frame chassis includes a splitter mounting location at which optical splitters can be mounted and an optical termination field. The optical termination field includes multiple fiber optic adapters.

Claims (58)

1. A fiber distribution hub comprising:

an enclosure defining an interior, the enclosure including a main enclosure body and a door connected to the main enclosure body, the main enclosure body defining an access opening for enabling access to the interior of the enclosure, the door configured to move relative to the main enclosure body from a closed position covering at least a portion of the access opening to an open position;

a swing frame chassis pivotally mounted within the enclosure;

at least a first optical splitter module mounted to the swing frame chassis, the first optical splitter module configured to receive an incoming optical signal and to split the incoming optical signal into a plurality of output signals;

a plurality of pigtails having connectorized ends, the pigtails being carried by the swing frame chassis, each of the pigtails configured to transmit one of the output signals split by the first optical splitter module; and

an optical termination field including a plurality of fiber optic adapters carried by the swing frame chassis, the fiber optic adapters being configured to receive the connectorized ends of the pigtails, the swing frame chassis being pivotally moveable between a first position and a second position, the optical termination field including a first side positioned opposite from a second side, wherein the connectorized ends of the pigtails are received at the first side of the optical termination field, wherein the first side of the optical termination field is accessible through the access opening when the swing frame chassis is in the first position, wherein the swing frame chassis blocks access to the second side of the optical termination field through the access opening when the swing frame chassis is in the first position, and wherein the second side of the optical termination field is exposed when the swing frame chassis is in the second position.

2. The fiber distribution hub of claim 1 , wherein the swing frame chassis is fully within the interior of the enclosure when in the first position, and wherein the swing frame chassis at least partially protrudes from the interior of the enclosure when in the second position.

3. The fiber distribution hub of claim 2 , wherein at least some of the fiber optic adapters are located fully outside the interior of the enclosure when the swing frame chassis is pivoted to the second position.

4. The fiber distribution hub of claim 2 , wherein at least a majority of the fiber optic adapters of the optical termination field are located fully outside the interior of the enclosure when the swing frame chassis is pivoted to the second position.

5. The fiber distribution hub of claim 2 , wherein all of the fiber optic adapters of the optical termination field are located fully outside the interior of the enclosure when the swing frame chassis is pivoted to the second position.

6. The fiber distribution hub of claim 1 , further comprising fiber management brackets carried by the swing frame chassis for routing the pigtails on the swing frame chassis.

7. The fiber distribution hub of claim 1 , further comprising a fiber management channel carried by the swing frame chassis for routing the pigtails on the swing frame chassis.

8. The fiber distribution hub of claim 1 , further comprising fiber bend radius limiters carried by the swing frame chassis for managing the pigtails on the swing frame chassis.

9. The fiber distribution hub of claim 1 , further comprising a shelf carried by the swing frame chassis.

10. The fiber distribution hub of claim 1 , further comprising a splice location carried by the swing frame chassis.

11. The fiber distribution hub of claim 10 , wherein the splice location includes a splice tray.

The fiber distribution hub of claim 1 , further comprising a fiber optic connector storage location at which the connectorized ends of the pigtails can be stored when not received within the fiber optic adapters of the optical termination field, the connector storage location being carried by the swing frame chassis.

13. The distribution hub of claim 12 , wherein the fiber optic connector storage location includes a plurality of receptacles each configured for receiving one of the connectorized ends of the pigtails, and wherein the receptacles are not functional fiber optic adapters.

14. The fiber distribution hub of claim 12 , wherein the swing frame chassis includes a main swing frame body that is pivotally connected to the enclosure by a hinge, wherein the swing frame chassis also includes a chassis panel pivotally connected to the main swing frame body, wherein the first optical splitter module and the optical termination field are provided on the main swing frame body, and wherein the fiber optic connector storage location is provided on the chassis panel.

15. The fiber distribution hub of claim 14 , wherein the chassis panel is configured to be pivoted relative to the main swing frame body to a closed position in which the chassis panel covers at least a portion of the optical termination field.

16. The fiber distribution hub of claim 14 , wherein the fiber optic connector storage location includes a plurality of receptacles each configured for receiving one of the connectorized ends of the pigtails, the receptacles not being functional fiber optic adapters.

17. The fiber distribution hub of claim 1 , wherein the pigtails have portions that are routed generally vertically on the swing frame chassis.

18. The fiber distribution hub of claim 1 , wherein the enclosure is adapted for use in an outside environment.

19. The fiber distribution hub of claim 18 , wherein the enclosure is NEMA-4X rated.

20. A fiber distribution hub comprising:

an enclosure defining an interior, the enclosure including a main enclosure body and a door pivotally connected to the main enclosure body, the main enclosure body defining an access opening for enabling access to the interior of the enclosure, the door being configured to pivot relative to the main enclosure body from a closed position covering at least a portion of the access opening to an open position;

a swing frame chassis pivotally mounted within the enclosure;

at least a first optical splitter module mounted to the swing frame chassis, the first optical splitter module being configured to receive an incoming optical signal and to split the incoming optical signal into a plurality of output signals;

a plurality of pigtails having connectorized ends, the pigtails being carried by the swing frame chassis, each of the pigtails being configured to transmit one of the output signals split by the first optical splitter module;

an optical termination field including a plurality of fiber optic adapters carried by the swing frame chassis, the fiber optic adapters being configured to receive the connectorized ends of the pigtails;

at least one connector holder carried by the swing frame chassis, the connector holder being provided at a connector storage location at which the connectorized ends of the pigtails can be stored when not received within the fiber optic adapters of the optical termination field; and

a plurality of fiber bend radius limiters about which the pigtails are routed, the fiber bend radius limiters being carried by the swing frame chassis.

21. The fiber distribution hub of claim 20 , wherein the optical termination field is at a location separate from the splitter module.

22. The fiber distribution hub of claim 21 , wherein the optical termination field is vertically spaced from the splitter module.

23. The fiber distribution hub of claim 21 , wherein the location of the optical termination field is separate from the connector storage location.

24. The fiber distribution hub of claim 20 , wherein the optical termination field includes a first side positioned opposite from a second side, wherein the connectorized ends of the pigtails are received at the first side of the optical termination field, wherein the swing frame chassis is pivotally moveable between a first position and a second position, wherein the first side of the optical termination field is accessible through the access opening when the swing frame chassis is in the first position, wherein the swing frame chassis blocks access to the second side of the optical termination field through the access opening when the swing frame chassis is in the first position, and wherein the second side of the optical termination field is exposed when the swing frame chassis is in the second position.

25. A fiber distribution hub comprising:

an enclosure defining an interior, the enclosure including a main enclosure body and a door pivotally connected to the main enclosure body by a hinge defining a first vertically extending hinge axis, the main enclosure body defining an access opening for enabling access to the interior of the enclosure, the door configured to pivot about the first vertically extending hinge axis from a closed position covering at least a portion of the access opening to an open position, the enclosure having a height and a width;

a swing frame chassis pivotally mounted within the enclosure, the swing frame chassis configured to pivot relative to the enclosure about a second vertically extending hinge axis from a first position in which the swing frame chassis is arranged fully within the interior of the enclosure to a second position in which the swing frame chassis at least partially protrudes from the interior of the enclosure, the swing frame chassis having a height extending along a majority of the height of the enclosure and having a width extending along a majority of the width of the enclosure;

a splitter module mounting location at which optical splitter modules can be mounted, the splitter mounting location being provided on the swing frame chassis; and

an optical termination field carried by the swing frame chassis at a location separate from the splitter module mounting location, the optical termination field including a plurality of fiber optic adapters.

26. The fiber distribution hub of claim 25 , wherein the first vertically extending hinge axis is arranged adjacent the second vertically extending hinge axis.

27. The fiber distribution hub of claim 25 , wherein the location of the optical termination field is vertically spaced from the splitter module mounting location.

28. The fiber distribution hub of claim 25 , further comprising a plurality of pigtails having connectorized ends, the pigtails being carried by the swing frame chassis, each of the pigtails being configured to transmit one of the output signals split by the first optical splitter module.

The fiber distribution hub of claim 28 , wherein the optical termination field includes a first side positioned opposite from a second side, wherein the connectorized ends of the pigtails are received at the first side of the optical termination field, wherein the swing frame chassis is pivotally moveable between a first position and a second position, wherein the first side of the optical termination field is accessible through the access opening when the swing frame chassis is in the first position, wherein the swing frame chassis blocks access to the second side of the optical termination field through the access opening when the swing frame chassis is in the first position, and wherein the second side of the optical termination field is exposed when the swing frame chassis is in the second position.

30. A fiber distribution hub comprising:

an enclosure defining an interior and an access opening enabling access to the interior, the enclosure including a door pivotally mounted to the enclosure, the door being configured to pivot about a pivot axis from a closed position, covering at least a portion of the access opening of the enclosure, to an open position;

at least a first optical splitter module mounted within the enclosure, the first optical splitter module being configured to receive an incoming optical signal and to split the incoming optical signal into a plurality of output signals;

a plurality of pigtails having connectorized ends, each of the pigtails being configured to transmit one of the output signals split by the first optical splitter module;

an optical termination field located within the enclosure, the termination field including a plurality of fiber optic adapters, the fiber optic adapters being configured to receive the connectorized ends of the pigtails;

a panel positioned within the enclosure, the panel being pivotally movable relative to the enclosure about a pivot axis that is separate from the pivot axis of the door; and

at least one connector holder carried by the panel, the connector holder being provided at a connector storage location at which the connectorized ends of the pigtails can be stored when not received within the fiber optic adapters of the optical termination field, the connector holder having a construction different than a functional fiber optic adapter.

31. A fiber distribution hub comprising:

an enclosure defining an interior and an access opening enabling access to the interior, the enclosure including a door pivotally mounted to the enclosure, the door being configured to pivot about a pivot axis from a closed position, covering at least a portion of the access opening of the enclosure, to an open position;

a fiber optic splitter mounting location positioned within the enclosure;

an optical termination field located within the enclosure, the termination field including a plurality of fiber optic adapters;

a panel positioned within the enclosure, the panel being pivotally movable relative to the enclosure about a pivot axis that is separate from the pivot axis of the door; and

at least one connector holder carried by the panel, the connector holder being provided at a connector storage location, the connector holder having a construction different than a functional fiber optic adapter, wherein the panel can be pivoted relative to the optical termination field to a closed position in which the panel covers at least a portion of the optical termination field.
