Abstract

Templates are disclosed that permit an orthodontist to accurately place appliances such as bracket shims or brackets on a tooth or teeth at a desired position. The templates can be used for accurately locating the position of other dental or orthodontic procedures, such as varnishing, tooth etching and root canals. The templates are made from a flexible sheet of material adapted to be adhered directly to the surface of the tooth or teeth. The sheet of material is formed with the outline of the tooth or teeth or in the shape of the tooth to allow the template to be posited in a proper, reference position. The sheet of material is also formed with one or more marks indicating the location of the bracket on the tooth, for example one mark indicting the bracket base location and other marks indicating the orientation of the base and bracket slot. The mark indicating the bracket base is punched out or otherwise removed from the sheet to provide a void in the template, enabling the user to directly bond the bracket to the tooth at the location of the void. Also disclosed is a method of verifying the accuracy of the placement of the template on the teeth of a patient.

Claims (27)

1. A method for re-bonding a new bracket in the position of a lost bracket on a particular tooth, comprising the steps of:

a) obtaining a three-dimensional virtual model of the dentition of a patient comprising virtual models of the patient's teeth, and virtual models of the brackets originally bonded on the teeth; wherein said three-dimensional virtual model is created from in-vivo scanned images of the patient's dentition taken after the brackets have been bonded to the teeth;

b) generating a bracket placement template for each of said teeth based upon said three-dimensional virtual model;

wherein said bracket placement template comprises a flexible sheet of material and one or more marks indicating the position and orientation of the bracket base on the tooth;

c) applying the bracket placement template to the surface of the particular tooth;

d) placing a new bracket on the particular tooth at the location indicated by said bracket placement template; and

e) bonding said new bracket to the particular tooth.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said in-vivo scanned images are obtained using a hand-held scanner.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said brackets are of-the-shelf generic brackets.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of, prior to step d), removing at least a portion of said one or more marks so as to form a void in said bracket placement template at the location of the bracket base.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising the step of, after step e), removing said bracket placement template.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein said flexible sheet of material having said mark comprises a printed sheet of material, wherein one surface of said printed sheet of material comprises an adhesive material.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein said flexible sheet of material is sized and shaped so as to fit over a single tooth of said patient or a model of said single tooth.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein said flexible sheet of material has a void at the location and orientation of where said bracket is to be placed on said tooth;

said sheet of material having a tooth-facing surface to be placed on the surface of said tooth in a reference position wherein said void accurately indicates the proper location for said bracket.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising the step of applying a composition to the surface of said tooth after step c), said composition selected from the group of compositions comprising varnish, acid, and sealants.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein said flexible sheet of material has a tooth surface facing side and an opposite side, said tooth surface facing side incorporating one or more mark indicating elements positioned at the location and orientation of where said bracket is to be placed on said tooth; wherein, after said flexible sheet of material is placed onto said tooth, said one or more mark indicating elements is activated so as to impart a perceptible mark onto the surface of said tooth to indicate the proper location for said bracket.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein said bracket placement template comprises a second sheet of material having a bracket applied thereto and wherein said second sheet of material further comprises alignment marks for aligning said second sheet of material to said alignment marks on said flexible sheet of material to thereby align said bracket.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein said bracket placement template comprises a second sheet of material having a bracket applied thereto and wherein said second sheet of material further comprises alignment marks for aligning said second sheet of material to said alignment marks on said flexible sheet of material to thereby align said bracket, wherein said second sheet of material is sized and shaped to fit on said tooth and wherein said second sheet of material comprises a void, wherein said bracket is placed in said void.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein said flexible sheet of material further comprises a perforation facilitating removal of said flexible sheet of material from said tooth.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein said flexible sheet of material comprises a transparent sheet of material.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein a first portion of said flexible sheet of material is transparent and wherein a second portion of said flexible sheet of material is opaque.

16. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the steps of, after step c), i) verifying the accuracy of the placement of said bracket placement template on said tooth; and ii) adjusting the placement of said bracket placement template on said tooth until an acceptable placement of said bracket placement template is achieved.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the step i) of verifying the accuracy of the placement of said bracket placement template on said tooth comprises taking an image of the dentition of the patient with said bracket placement template placed upon said tooth; storing said image in a computer; and digitally comparing said image with said bracket placement template placed on said virtual three-dimensional model of the teeth of said patient.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein said image of the dentition of said patient with said bracket placement template placed upon the teeth is taken using an in-vivo scanning device.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein said in-vivo scanning device is a hand held device.

20. The method of claim 17 , wherein said image of the dentition of said patient with said bracket placement template placed upon the teeth is taken with digital photographs.
