Abstract

A surgical staple including at least one deformable member which can be bent upon contacting an anvil of a surgical stapler. In various embodiments, at least a portion of the deformable member can include a non-circular cross-section which can dictate the direction and manner in which the deformable member is bent. In at least one various embodiment, the non-circular cross-section can include a flat portion which can cause the deformable member to bend in the direction of the flat portion. In various embodiments, the non-circular portion of the cross-section can be configured to abut soft tissue of a patient and apply a compressive force or pressure thereto. In various embodiments, a crown formed on the surgical staple can dissolve as the soft tissue heals and can, depending on the cross-sectional geometry of the deformable member, reduce the force or pressure applied to the soft tissue by the deformable member.

Claims (29)

1 . A surgical staple, comprising:

a base;

a crown, wherein said crown is comprised of a first dissolvable material; and

a first deformable member extending from said base, wherein at least a portion of said first deformable member includes a non-circular cross-section.

2 . The surgical staple of claim 1 , wherein said crown is overmolded onto said base.

3 . The surgical staple of claim 1 , further comprising a second deformable member extending from said base, wherein at least a portion of said second deformable member includes a non-circular cross-section.

4 . The surgical staple of claim 1 , wherein said first deformable member is comprised of a non-dissolvable material.

5 . The surgical staple of claim 1 , wherein said first deformable member is comprised of a second dissolvable material.

6 . The surgical staple of claim 1 , wherein said crown further includes at least one second material, wherein said second material comprises a therapeutic drug, and wherein the dissolution of said crown releases said therapeutic drug.

7 . The surgical staple of claim 1 , wherein said non-circular cross-section includes at least one flat surface.

8 . The surgical staple of claim 7 , wherein said non-circular cross-section further includes at least one arcuate surface.

9 . The surgical staple of claim 1 , wherein said non-circular cross-section includes a first flat surface and a second flat surface, and wherein said first flat surface is substantially parallel to said second flat surface.

10 . The surgical staple of claim 1 , wherein said first deformable member includes an end, and wherein said end includes said non-circular cross-section.

11 . A surgical staple, comprising:

a base;

a crown, wherein said crown is comprised of a first bioabsorbable material;

a first deformable member extending from said base, wherein at least a portion of said first deformable member includes a cross-section having at least one flat surface.

12 . The surgical staple of claim 11 , wherein said crown is overmolded onto said base.

13 . The surgical staple of claim 11 , further comprising a second deformable member extending from said base, wherein at least a portion of said second deformable member includes a cross-section having at least one flat surface.

14 . The surgical staple of claim 11 , wherein said first deformable member is comprised of a non-bioabsorbable material.

15 . The surgical staple of claim 11 , wherein said first deformable member is comprised of a second bioabsorbable material.

16 . The surgical staple of claim 11 , wherein said crown further includes at least one second material, wherein said second material comprises a therapeutic drug, and wherein the absorption of said first material releases said therapeutic drug.

17 . The surgical staple of claim 11 , wherein said cross-section further includes at least one arcuate surface.

18 . The surgical staple of claim 11 , wherein said at least one flat surface includes a first flat surface and a second flat surface, and wherein said first flat surface is substantially parallel to said second flat surface.

19 . The surgical staple of claim 11 , wherein said first deformable member includes an end, and wherein said end includes said flat surface.

20 . A surgical staple, comprising:

a base;

a first deformable member extending from said base, wherein said first deformable member is configured to capture soft tissue intermediate said first deformable member and said base, and wherein at least a portion of said first deformable member includes a non-circular cross-section; and

dissolvable means for applying a first force against the soft tissue before the dissolvable means has dissolved and for applying a second force against the soft tissue after at least a portion of the dissolvable means has dissolved.
