Abstract

A power transmission belt with an embedded load carrier cord having a plurality of yarns and possessing a first twist corresponding to a first twist multiplier and a first twist direction, and possessing a second twist corresponding to a second twist multiplier in the opposite direction, such that the ratio of the first twist multiplier to the second twist multiplier is greater than about 1.5, and at least one yarn includes fibers of polyketone or polyvinylalcohol.

Claims (27)

1. In an endless belt comprising an elastomeric belt body and a load carrier cord embedded in said body; said cord comprising a plurality of yarns having a first twist corresponding to a first twist multiplier and a first twist direction, and said cord having a second twist corresponding to a second twist multiplier in a direction opposite said first twist direction; the improvement characterized in that the ratio of said first twist multiplier to said second twist multiplier is greater than 1.5; and said first twist multiplier is greater than about 4.5.

2. The belt of claim 1 wherein said yarns comprise a plurality of fibers, wherein at least half of said fibers comprise polyketone or polyvinylalcohol.

3. The belt of claim 2 selected from a multi-v-ribbed belt, a v-belt, a toothed synchronous belt, and a flat belt; and wherein said elastomeric belt body comprises cast polyurethane.

4. The belt of claim 3 wherein said first twist multiplier is in the range of from about 4.5 to about 9.

5. The belt of claim 3 wherein said first twist multiplier is in the range of from about 4.5 to about 6.

6. The belt of claim 3 wherein said second twist multiplier is in the range of from about 0.5 to about 6.

7. The belt of claim 3 wherein said second twist multiplier is greater than 1.0 and less than 3.5.

8. A belt drive comprising the belt of claim 3 trained about, at least, one driver pulley and one driven pulley.

9. The belt of claim 2 in the form of a multi-v-ribbed belt.

10. The belt of claim 9 wherein said cord has adhesive treatment for bonding said fibers together and said cord to said body.

11. The belt of claim 10 wherein said elastomeric belt body comprises an elastomer selected from the group EPDM, HNBR, EPM, EOM, EBM, EBDM, EODM, NBR, PU, CR, NR, SBR, BR, EAM, EVM, silicone, and blends thereof.

12. The belt of claim 11 wherein said first twist multiplier is in the range of from about 4.5 to about 9.

13. The belt of claim 11 wherein said first twist multiplier is in the range of from about 4.5 to about 6.

14. The belt of claim 11 wherein said second twist multiplier is in the range of from about 0.5 to about 6.

15. The belt of claim 11 wherein said second twist multiplier is greater than 1.0 and less than 3.5.

16. A belt drive comprising the belt of claim 11 trained about, at least, one driver pulley and one driven pulley.

17. The belt of claim 1 wherein the ratio of said first twist multiplier to said second twist multiplier is in the range of from 1.5:1 to about 4:1.

18. The belt of claim 17 wherein said second twist multiplier is greater than 1.0 and less than 3.5.

19. A belt drive comprising the belt of claim 18 trained about at least one driver pulley and one driven pulley.

20. The belt of claim 1 wherein said ratio is greater than about 2.

21. The belt of claim 1 wherein said second twist multiplier is greater than about 0.5.

22. The belt of claim 21 wherein said second twist multiplier is less than 3.5.

23. The belt of claim 21 wherein said second twist multiplier is between 1.0 and 3.5.

24. The belt of claim 23 wherein said ratio is greater than about 2.

25. The belt of claim 21 wherein said second twist multiplier is between 1.5 and 3.5.

26. In an endless belt comprising an elastomeric belt body and a load carrier cord embedded in said body; said cord comprising a plurality of yarns having a first twist corresponding to a first twist multiplier and a first twist direction, and said cord having a second twist corresponding to a second twist multiplier in a direction opposite said first twist direction; the improvement characterized in that the ratio of said first twist multiplier to said second twist multiplier is greater than 1.5; said first twist multiplier is greater than about 4.5, and at least one said yarn comprises fibers of polyketone.

27. The belt of claim 26 wherein said second twist multiplier is greater than 1.0 and less than 3.5.
