Abstract

An automated banking machine ( 10 ) is operative to carry out financial transactions and includes a user interface ( 15 ). The user interface includes a card reader ( 16 ) which is operative to read data on user cards which identify user's financial accounts. A fascia of the machine includes a keypad ( 404, 438, 458 ) through which users input confidential data. Covers ( 400, 422, 430 ) prevent unauthorized persons from viewing confidential inputs to the keypad. Alternatively, movable panels ( 462, 464 ) are movable to prevent unauthorized viewing of confidential inputs. Alternatively a keypad cover is selectively collapsible to prevent digit access. A visual indicator is operative to indicate to a user that keypad inputs are being encrypted. Disinfecting techniques may be used to disinfect manual contact surfaces of the machine.

Claims (79)

1. Apparatus comprising:

an automated banking machine including:

a card reader;

a keypad including a plurality of keys;

a display;

a cash dispenser,

at least one processor in operative connection with the card reader, the keypad, the display, and a cash dispenser,

wherein the at least one processor is operative responsive to signals to the display to determine if the display is providing at an inappropriate time, at least one output that requests at least one confidential user input to the machine;

wherein responsive to a positive determination, the at least one processor is operative to cause the machine to take at least one action related to detection of an unauthorized condition at the machine.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the at least one processor is operative responsive to a positive determination, to encrypt through operation of the keypad, keypad output signals corresponding to user inputs through the keypad.

3. The apparatus according to claim 2 wherein the at least one processor is operative to determine if the signals to the display cause the display to output first instructions to input a personal identification number (PIN) to the machine, and wherein the at least one processor is operative to cause the keypad to encrypt the keypad output signals in response to the positive determination.

4. The apparatus according to claim 3 wherein the at least one processor executes instructions including character recognition software, and wherein a positive determination is made responsive to execution of the character recognition software.

5. The apparatus according to claim 4 wherein the at least one processor is operative to receive encrypted keypad output signals from the keypad corresponding to an input PIN.

6. The apparatus according to claim 5 wherein the at least one processor is operative responsive to signals to the display, to determine that the display is no longer providing the first instructions.

7. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the at least one processor executes instructions including character recognition software, and wherein a positive determination is made responsive to execution of the character recognition software.

8. The apparatus according to claim 1 and further comprising:

at least one indicator, wherein the at least one indicator is in operative connection with the at least one processor;

wherein the at least one processor is operative responsive to a positive determination, to cause the at least one indicator to indicate that inputs to the keypad are being encrypted.

9. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the at least one action includes sending at least one message from the machine to a remote computer, wherein the at least one message indicates an abnormal condition at the machine.

10. The apparatus according to claim 1

wherein the at least one processor is operative to cause the automated banking machine to carry out a transaction sequence,

wherein the transaction sequence includes a plurality of states,

wherein the at least one processor is operative in a first state in the transaction sequence to

cause first signals to be sent to the display,

 wherein the first signals are operative to cause first instructions to be output at the display, and

cause the keypad to encrypt keypad output signals corresponding to inputs thereto, and

wherein the at least one processor is operative

responsive to both

a positive determination and

a further determination by the at least one processor that the machine is not currently in the first state in the transaction sequence,

to cause the machine to send at least one message to a remote computer.

11. The apparatus according to claim 10 and further comprising at least one indicator,

wherein the at least one indicator is in operative connection with the at least one processor;

wherein the at least one processor is operative to cause the at least one indicator to indicate that inputs to the keypad are being encrypted,

wherein the at least one processor is operative in a second state of the sequence, to cause the display to output second instructions,

wherein the second instructions instruct the user of the banking machine to input at least one numerical value to the keypad,

wherein the at least one processor is operative

to cause the keypad not to encrypt signals corresponding to the at least one numerical value, and

at least while the second instructions are output, to cause the at least one indicator to indicate that inputs to the keypad are not being encrypted.

12. The apparatus according to claim 11

wherein the at least one processor is operative to receive unencrypted signals corresponding to the at least one numerical value input through the keypad,

wherein the keypad includes at least one data store, wherein the at least one data store includes at least one public key and at least one private key.

13. The apparatus according to claim 11

wherein the at least one processor is operative to receive unencrypted signals corresponding to the at least one numerical value input through the keypad,

wherein the machine includes a user interface, wherein the user interface includes the display, the keypad, and the at least one indicator,

wherein the at least one indicator comprises an illuminating device,

wherein the keypad includes the illuminating device.

14. The apparatus according to claim 1 and further comprising a keypad cover overlying at least some of the keys of the keypad, wherein the cover bounds an opening transversely disposed of at least some of the keys of the keypad, and wherein the cover is configured such that the keypad is not fully visible through the cover except from a point of view of a user operating the machine.

15. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the keypad cover comprises flexible material, and wherein the keypad cover is changeable between a collapsed condition and an operative condition responsive to the at least one processor, and wherein in an operative condition all of the keys of the keypad are digit accessible, and in the collapsed condition of the keypad cover at least one key of the keypad is not digit accessible.

16. Apparatus comprising:

an automated banking machine including:

a card reader;

a keypad including a plurality of keys;

a user display;

a cash dispenser;

at least one processor,

wherein the at least one processor is in operative connection with the card reader, the keypad, the user display, and the cash dispenser;

wherein the at least one processor is operative to analyze signals corresponding to outputs through the user display,

wherein the analysis includes determining if the user display is receiving at an inappropriate time, signals that cause at least one output through the user display that requests from a machine user, user input of confidential information through at least one of the keypad and the card reader.

17. The apparatus according to claim 16 wherein the at least one processor is operative responsive to a positive determination, to cause signals corresponding to inputs to the keypad to be encrypted.

18. The apparatus according to claim 16

wherein the at least one processor is operative to cause the machine to execute a transaction sequence,

wherein the transaction sequence includes a plurality of states, and

wherein the transaction sequence includes a first state,

wherein in the first state the at least one processor is operative to both

 cause a display to output a request to input confidential information through the keypad and

 cause encryption of signals corresponding to data input through the keypad;

wherein the at least one processor is operative to carry out a positive determination while the machine is not in the first state.

19. The apparatus according to claim 16 wherein the at least one processor is operative responsive to a positive determination, to cause the machine to send at least one message to a remote computer indicating an abnormal condition of the automated banking machine.

20. The apparatus according to claim 16 wherein the at least one processor includes computer executable instructions that include character recognition software, wherein a positive determination is made responsive to execution of the character recognition software.
