Abstract

A method of and apparatus for deploying a bow spring centralizer installed on an expandable casing string and restrained in the collapsed configuration by restraining bands that rupture, upon expansion of the casing string, to deploy the bow spring centralizer and provide stand-off between the expanded casing string and the wall of the borehole. In one embodiment, the bow spring centralizer comprises landings for receiving and retaining the bands for restraining the centralizer in the collapsed configuration. In another embodiment, the bands are secured to the centralizer to prevent separation of the ruptured bands from the deployed centralizer.

Claims (34)

1. A method of deploying an expandable bow spring centralizer installed on an expandable casing string, restrained in a collapsed configuration by one or more bands, and deployable within a borehole to provide stand-off between the expanded casing string and the borehole, the method comprising the steps of:

expanding the expandable casing string within a targeted interval of the borehole;

rupturing the one or more bands to release the bow springs; and

securing the one or more bands to the one or more bow springs to prevent separation of the ruptured band from the centralizer.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of:

selecting a band material of the one or more bands that is less ductile than a material of the expandable casing string.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the number of bands is two.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of:

puncturing, drilling, crimping, or heat treating at least a portion of the one or more bands.

5. A method of deploying an expandable bow spring centralizer installed on an expandable casing string, restrained in a collapsed configuration by one or more bands, and deployable within a borehole to provide stand-off between the expanded casing string and the borehole, the method comprising the steps of:

expanding the expandable casing string within a targeted interval of the borehole;

rupturing the one or more bands to release the bow springs; and

providing at least one of the one or more bands having at least a portion thereof that is at least one of milled, channeled, notched, necked and heat treated.

6. An expandable centralizer to provide stand-off between a borehole and an expanded casing string comprising:

a first expandable collar and a second expandable collar;

a plurality of bow springs coupled at a first end to the first expandable collar and at a second end to the second expandable collar;

at least one landing formed into the radially exterior surface of at least one of the bow springs to receive and retain a band to restrain the bow springs in a collapsed configuration;

wherein the band comprises a portion that is at least one of notched, necked, punctured, drilled, crimped, and heat treated.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the landing portion is a milled channel.

8. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the landing portion is a surface depression.

9. The centralizers of claim 6 wherein the centralizer comprises a first extendable collar and a second extendable collar.

10. The centralizer of claim 9 wherein the first extendable collar, the second extendable collar and the bow springs are formed from unitary piece of tubular pipe.

11. The centralizer of claim 6 wherein the centralizer comprises a first connection between the first end of a bow spring and the first expandable collar and a second connection between the second end of the bow spring and the second expandable collar that are adapted to resist failure upon expansion of the first and second collars and the casing string.

12. The centralizer of claim 11 wherein the bow springs are integral with the first collar and the second expandable collars.

13. The centralizer of claim 11 wherein the first expandable collar, the second expandable collar and the bow springs are formed from a unitary piece of tubular pipe.

14. An expandable centralizer to provide stand-off between an expanded casing string and a borehole comprising:

one or more sacrificial bands to restrain a plurality of bow springs of the centralizer in a collapsed configuration,

wherein the one or more sacrificial bands are predisposed to rupture upon expansion of the expandable casing string within a predetermined range of expandability to release the bow springs to a deployed configuration, and

wherein the at least one of the bands comprises a portion that is at least one of notched, necked, channeled, milled, and heat treated.

15. The centralizer of claim 14 wherein the at least one of the bands comprises a material having less ductility than a material of the expandable casing string.

16. An expandable centralizer to provide stand-off between an expanded casing string and a borehole having at least one expandable collar coupled to a first end of a plurality of bow springs, the expandable centralizer comprising:

one or more bands to restrain the plurality of bow springs in a collapsed configuration,

wherein the one or more bands are predisposed to rupture upon expansion of the expandable casing string within a predetermined range of expandability to release the bow springs to a deployed configuration, and wherein the at least one of the bands comprises a portion that is at least one of notched, necked, channeled, milled, and heat treated.

17. The centralizer of claim 16 wherein the at least one of the bands comprises a material that is less ductile than a material of the expandable casing string.
